I watched an entire TF of subchasers repair from 14+ SYS damage all the way down to 0 while remaining docked at San Francisco. They never were disbanded and it didn't take all that long; there were turns where half of them would lose several points each in fact. Even when undocked (but still in a TF) they would repair damage, but not as quickly.

You mean they were still at sea and repaired? Or are you confusing "docked" for "disbanded"?? [&:] [&:] (A ship can be in a TF and docked, but not disbanded.)

They were in San Francisco's hex, but not disbanded. While they were docked they repaired damage at a remarkable rate; since shipyard repair points were being used, I concluded that both port and shipyard repairs were being made on them. After I undocked them but kept them in the hex, they continued to repair but at a lower rate; I concluded that in this situation only port repairs were being made on them.
As I said earlier, there were only two damaged ships disbanded in SF port while I observed the subchasers getting repaired. They repaired only one point of SYS damage while the SC's went from 14+ to 5-0 SYS.

I see all of the time ships in a docked TF getting repaired and drawing repair points from the port repair yards.

Yes, but UNdocked ones?? [&:] This was the first time i've heard of it...

My experience is that ships in undocked TF's do not repair damage and draw repair points from the port. I guess there could be a "at sea" repair but I havn't noticed repair points being taken by TF's at sea, even at sea in a port hex.

I didn't say that when undocked they used shipyard points, I said when they were DOCKED that they did. When they were undocked they kept repairing at a slower rate (but still below SYS 5 BTW), but as far as I could tell they weren't using shipyard points while undocked.

Damn. Ok, I'll send my ships back and keep them undocked next turn. [:D]

Not sure about this...Did you set your undocked ships to Patrol/Do Not Retire...Because if not, AFAIK they will dock automatically during the turn resolution.

Nah, all my ship captains get paid, no matter where they are heading. They are very used to the fact that the "Old Man" doesn't have a clue what he's doing. [:D]

That is correct, Patrol/do not retire keeps them at sea looking at the city lights at night but to far to hit the bars.

John,
Use San Fran for large capital ships (CA or large for repairs, maybe CL as needed). Since I play on AB's extended map, I use Portland and LA for AK/AP returning from Oz/Nz area to get the few sys damage points down to zero. Then I set them in a small TF to go to San Fran at cruise speed.
ASAP, put 4 AR's and 2 AD's in San Fran. Thus, I only have these recently repaired ships coming into San Fran with only a point or two max, if at all. Then, the repair points are used for the big ships. The AI will go through those with lower number ID numbers first (CV-BB-CA-CL) before it gets to the SC/AK/AP, etc. Since the bigger ships have higher durability rating, the shipyard need to stockpile repair points to do repairs on the big boys. If you keep smaller ships with lower durability ratings, then if and when, a larger ship fails the die roll to effect repair, AI will continue to go through the smaller ships and there is a good chance enough of them will pass the die roll and eat up your repair points you are trying to stockpile for major repairs.
IMO, you will need to do what I do and manually change the home port of returning ships to other ports than San Fran to avoid what has been happening to you. If you allow them to dock and refuel, then you run the risk of them using your repair points as others have pointed out. It is more micro-management, but it is automatic for me now. [:D]
Don't forget to hit the "S" button to list all ships and then the "ships due upgrades" to view what may upgrade every 1st of the month. [;)]
Good read on this subject.

Dino,
I checked each turn; the subchaser TF was docked and using shipyard repair points. When I undocked them they stayed that way and kept repairing, but at a slower pace and without using repair points. Eventually they all reached 0 SYS while undocked.
NY59Giants,
Yeah, I'm foresee a lot of home port changing on all those ships returning to the West Coast. There needs to be a way to limit who gets repaired; just because a ship shows up and refuels shouldn't mean they become candidates for being grabbed and repaired by the shipyard.
