ALL the bombs that hit Greys carriers were thousand pounders. Shokaku and likely Zuikaku wont be going home, but sadly neither will Enterprise...

Ouch.  Losing Sho and Zui for only Enterprise will hurt the Japanese bad.  Your escorts in that TF also took a good amount of damage.  What do the Cruisers and BB look like?

Enterprise has been scuttled. [:(] Spruance survives, Mitscher takes the lead. Halsey cheers in Noumea, with a bottle of scotch no doubt over his old command poor Enterprise.

As for escorts not much, but North Carolinas out of it for a while. a very bittersweet victory for me. *points at sig* [:(][:'(]

really really stings to lose a ship you love. i remember reading that when Lexington went down there werent many dry eyes.

However it soothes me to know Grey can never again mount a carrier raid like this.

the presence of the scout cruisers explain how grey was able to avoid this battle the last time a few weeks ago

I was trying to act very cool around a girl I wanted to impress, put my hand down on a fireplace hearth in a cabin  (where a party was being held one spring ), and apparently had the misfortune to have discovered a Wasp nest. I was stung 4 times in rapid sucession by Wasps that were coming out of hibernation. Needless to say I gave upthe cool act very quickly. All was not lost however, I went the sympathy route instead [:)]

A shame to lose Enterprise, but she went down fighting. Taking out Zuikaku & Shokaku is more than a fair trade - they are two of the best carriers he has, and when the Essex's start rolling, he will miss them terribly.

indeed she did. i couldnt stand to watch though. his fleet can never rise again after this. but this was the Guadalcanal scen, so those WERE the best carriers he had[:D] i dont think you get any of the Essex class in the Guadalcanal scen do you? and the other Pearl Harbor carriers are of course on the bottom off Midway, so this was a massively decisive battle. now he'll only have Hiyo, Junyo and *maybe* Ryujo, she took a half tonner as well, an annoyance at best not not a true threat to my remaining carriers, but of course ill attempt to put em on the bottom if i see em[;)]. a fair trade as well, but its like a dagger through my heart. [:'(]

Shokaku was finished off today, she is confirmed sunk.

Zuikaku took 10 more bombs and 2 torpedoes. somehow i doubt shell make it home. the victory is complete. Mitscher and company are heading for Noumea. recon says theres battleships with his remaining force, probably CAs at the least, and i dont want to risk giving grey a night surface action that i cant win. time to go home.

Recon had spotted Grey's carriers heading SE, parallel to the Solomons several days prior, and with the last experience, i knew them for sure to be carriers, and his main force. all ships in the slot area hightailed it south.

Grey hit Luganville and was reported on a SW course. i assumed that he was heading for Noumea and sent all ships west, except for 2 decoy forces, 1 force a group of SCs, which he hit hard, and a small supply convoy. he was then reported to be heading west.

the setup for a carrier battle was almost perfect. he was heading west, so i sent the carriers east, and they ran almost smack into each other.

Shokaku is on the bottom of the Coral Sea, and i assume Zuikaku will soon follow. Ryujo is out of the war, technically, since sending her and the smaller carriers against my 3 would amount to near suicide.

My one regret of course, is the loss of Enterprise. id prefer to lose planes instead of carriers cuz of course planes are far more easily replaced. but she fought well and hard, and now i need not fear the double sword of LBA and Greys carriers, and im free to move into Kiriwina and Russell, or perhaps to bypass Russell and Munda, which Grey has stationed with 10000 troops, and take Vella Lavella

Operation Beat The Tar Outta Rabaul has begun in preperation of my long planned move into Woodlark and Russell.

Woodlark will give me another bomber base from which to launch medium bombers at Rabaul.

Russell will assist in the bypass of Munda. im gonna go straight for Vella Lavella and then Empress Augusta Bay, these operations based on intel of course.
