Lewis Puller? Never heard of him.

But sometime around 5/42 you might keep your eyes peeled for Chesty Puller, the most #$@! famous Marine in the history of the #$@! Corps, and the highest-rated US small-unit commander in the game.

Where I grew up, he was a revered member of the community and we kids were taught to address him properly, that's all. His mailbox read Lt Gen Lewis B Puller... so he was General Puller to us young'uns...

Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller (June 26, 1898 – October 11, 1971) was an officer in the United States Marine Corps and the only Marine to receive five Navy Crosses, the United States Navy's second highest decoration after the Medal of Honor. During his career, he fought guerrillas in Haiti and Nicaragua, and participated in some of the bloodiest battles of World War II and the Korean War. Puller retired from the Marine Corps in 1955, spending the rest of his life in Virginia.

Generals who were relieved of command have lower ratings.

I hope that relieved ratings are still higher than never-used ratings.

In Witp my biggest grief was that second-best officer for US CV TF was Bellinger, a guy who commanded... flying boats. He had much higher stats than "historicals" Brown or Fletcher...

IRL Army General Simon Bolivar Buckner was a very good combat general..(Killed during the war).

Yes, I spent four years at Christchurch School, which is right next to that church. His funeral was in the spring of my freshman year, IIRC. I received a copy of one of his biographies as a scholastic prize that year. His son also attended my school, many years before I was there (and was the second Pulitzer Prize winner among CCS graduates).

Thus I knew that Gen Puller was known as Chesty, but my background makes it hard for me to use that nikname...

BTW: the nice grassy field behind that sign is part of CCS campus. The school was created in the 1920's, the present sanctuary for the church dates to 1714 though there are graves starting from the 1670's.

This has been toned down, but not entirely eliminated. The highly-rated fictional Generals have been removed. However, as best I can tell, the game engine cranks out new "random" commanders whenever the number of unassigned commanders at that level falls below a certain threshold. I'd like to see those "random" commanders have much lower stats, but the programmers have a lot of more pressing things to do. It's on my 'patch request' list.

IRL Army General Simon Bolivar Buckner was a very good combat general..(Killed during the war).

It is hard to find a consensus on Buckner. By some accounts he was a stuffed-shirt officious "old army" bureaucrat. The Marines and Navy thought that he was much too cautious, and blamed him for the slow progress on Okinawa.

His defenders thought him to be capable and conscientious, and point out that progress on Okinawa remained slow even after Buckner was killed and replaced by Marine General Geiger. Geiger, btw, is the only Marine who ever commanded an Army (Tenth Army).

In stock, Buckner is rated as a Pericival-level moron. In AE, he has very low aggressiveness, but is otherwise competent.

Buckner did less than well in his first campaign.
