I think the largest WWII aircraft display

+1000 bombs every other museum I have been to into rubble. You could easily spend 2 or more days there. And...its free. Don't forget to go to the aux museum also. Been a while since I did that tour, but it was where they were restoring planes and had some pretty unique stuff back there.

Can anyone who has been to that one, name another one that is better? I would like to visit it if there is actually one out there.

This is what I've heard as well, but I have not yet had the privilege of visiting. Historiker, this could be your best option for adding a day. [:)]

The Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. It's right outside Baltimore.

I've been to this one. Very nice for LCU types. [8D]

If your visiting the East Coast, i'd say Aberdeen is a must. If your in the Boston area, go see the Big Maime. They also have a good PT boat restoration project going and their very own ex_East German missile boat.

Too late. I was on USS New Jersey yesterday, and on USS Olympia, today. Today was a total disappointment. 17$ for parking, another 18$ for the Museum - which was for kids to explain why a ship floats...

The USS Olympia isn't that interesting, except for being my first pre-dreadnought.
I've just checked in in my hotel in Dover. I turned to last-minute hotels on expedia. On expedia.com, they don't tell the name of the hotel - but on expedia.de, they do
The last two days, I was in a very nice hotel for just 70$/night including breakfast.

Anyway, time for some land- and air warfare. Had 2 BBs, 1 CV, 2 DDs, 3 SSs, 2 PTs, one ex DDR-Missile Boat and a 200 year old frigate, so far.

Time for the other branches of military

At the Air Mobility Command Museum, one of the employees added three interesting hotels to my list:

Pensacola USN Museum

It's getting hard to count, how many museums and ships I will have seen, then. Defenitly more, than many countrys posess at all [;)]

I've been to both the USS New Jersey and on USS Olympia--Philly is a favorite trip for my wife and I.

I enjoyed the USS Olympia a lot more, but then I am also a fan of the Victorian age. However, this year we went to the NJ Beerfest on the USS New Jersey, yum http://www.njbeer.org/

If you make it.to pensacola you should visit fort Pickens. It is an intact Civil war era fort. There are also Spanish American, WW I and II forts you can crawl over. Oh yes the beach is very nice too.

While you are in Virginia Beach...
Here is a link to the NAS Oceana (East Coast Master Jet base that operates 1/2 the USNs fleet of Hornets) tour from 2009. NOt sure if they are doing this right now, but as a Stash Ensign I was the tour guide back in the 90s for these. They are run by the City of Virginia Beach and are on City buses that tour the Base, including the flight line while air ops are ongoing. Ends at the O'Club for a nice lunch and Air Park/museum tour. Look into it. Really worth it if the dates are the same this year.

I have to concur with anyone who said Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum...first rate all the way, and free less any donation you choose to make. They even have a library full of rare out of print books, very cool. Some were donated by actual aviators form teh period, I found one with personal notes in it...

And eat some shrimp and grits at Hyman's Seafood Restaurant! My wife and I eat there at least twice every time we visit Charleston.

Hyman's were all the tourists go so be prepared to stand in line, which could be a chore with the heat we have been having. If you go over to see the Yorktown, go to Reds Ice House. It is where the locals eat, good beer and seafood. Its located on Shem creek and you may get to see a few shrimp boats come in.

On the Yorktown make sure you follow the self guided tours. On a couple of them they have rooms of WWII scale models. I posted some pictures a few months back.

Hyman's may be where all the tourists go, but so do the locals; any restaurant considered one of the best in the Southeast for seafood gets everyone coming to eat there.

So I will go there, too

BTW: I saw the beautiful Do 335 today. What an amazing plane...

I'm going to be 4 weeks in the states and want to visit some museums. Can anyone recommend military museums in the US?

Please take a break from the museums and visit a state or county fair, as per this thread: tm.asp?m=2556231

Just a friendly suggestion for getting a taste of the States, and maybe some heartburn from our cuisine. [:)]
