Oh, one more thing: now I have disbanded all the Corps HQs.
As for my opponent's move in the North, he had a good REASON in my opinion (the swamps are still a trap for tanks so it's still a mistake, in my opinion). As you can see on this screenshot, this sector (big X) was defenseless ONE TURN BEFORE: zero units or maybe one or two, I can't remember [:)] So I guess he used his recon planes and saw a hole in my front. But I too paid attention to that hole and decided to send a few STAVKA reserves to fix it (very few units though), no match for his tanks or infantry for that matter [:)] In other words, I was rather lucky.

You may want to take notes on the size/quality of reinforcements, for future campaigns. Not every division coming is ready to go; some are around 3500-4000 men, and they need at least a few weeks before they can hold a piece ground defensively.

Well, outside of Moscow and Leningrad he can do whatever he wants [:)] I will not win the war on 1941 so my biggest priority is to survive. I placed most of my strategic reserves in front of the most important enemy units: Army Group Center and between him and Moscow [:)] My strategy will be simple (until mud season): most of my forces --among them, like the 80% of the STAVKA strategic reserves-- will always face and try to block his most aforementioned dangerous units. Now I don't know what he's planning. If he sends part of the AGC Panzers to Ukraine or South Russia... OH YEAAAAH!!!! I wish he did that! [:D]
I mean, I will not divert my strategic reserves from this vital mission: whatever happens, do survive (in the Center that is, I don't care at all about Kiev or Kursk, I mean in 1941).
In fact in my Southwest Front I have many many divisions (in this front he could NOT trap my forces), and I've been thinking about sending maybe 15 or 20 divisions from there to my essential front (Moscow). But I don't think my situation is desperate so maybe I don't need these divisions. But they are there and I could call them if necessary. This, along with the STAVKA reserves (on the next 3 or 4 turns I will get like 30 divisions) makes a huge force [:)]
In a nutshell my plan is really simple. It's not even mine. It's what the Soviets did [8D]
EDITED: now you see his Panzers south of that big mass of troops. But on previous turns they were in front of them. He has changed the direction of his attack, which is good for me.
I fully understand you. I'm very much doing the same thing as you, concentrating in front of his perceived spearheads, and what I am seeing on my map looks a lot like what I see on yours (although he's not just leaving a screen to check my Leningrad and Northwestern Fronts.
It's good, because you have got one or two turns of pause. But fighting a mobile battle in the summer of 1941 there, around Bryansk, it's something that's gonna be though. You have plenty of forces around Moscow, and from the perception I've got from reading your AAR, you're more than willing to press really hard on the left flank of such an advance.
The problem is that the RKKA forces in the Ukraine will be placed between a rock - AGS - and a hard place - AGC. The stage would be set for the kind of decisive battle in the open the Germans want and need.
He's just leaving a screen on the Leningrad and North Western sectors, which is also good for you since you could be able to mount spoiling attacks on those sectors. But if he's moved all those troops - not only panzers, also infantry - and adopted a defensive posture there, well, he's clearly up to something. I wouldn't keep much troops there in the marshes of the lower Dnepr. I would set up a strategic reserve east of Dneproprovotsk (sp?).
Good luck! [:)]
PS: I really love your signature [:D]

Turn 9

14 august 1941
In the Northwest, well, Operation "
Now For Real, There Are Many Monsters Under Your Bed, Beware!" was successful, although my opponent more or less disagrees [:)] The point is I bought TIME (which was exactly my objective): the previous turn (isolated units = much less suplies) + I will cut his spearhead again this turn (again, isolated units etc.) = that makes 2 turns. Then I guess he will need minimum another turn to reorganize. So if my maths are not incorrect I bought 3 turns (maybe 4 or 5, who knows) to protect my second prioritary objective: Leningrad that is [8D] Not to mention that the isolated units were his most important PANZERS, not some Security units. The price (because nothing is free in this world, my friends [:D]): maybe 2 infantry divisions. Or maybe not.

Well, I think I'm going to create a big mess in his Army Group North thing. Or should I say at least I will try it [:D] This could definitely save Leningrad, because I would be buying more time again.
Bletchley_Geek, interesting views. Humm, so you think he might not want to capture Leningrad? You could be correct, indeed [:)]

In the west these stragglers are ordered to create some chaos and cut some enemies' throats as well. Good luck, they will need it [:)]

I don't see any mechanized forces, only IDs two-hexes from each other, a "classical" containment screen, maximizes frontage to pull out units from the line. I'd say - from the number of IDs I can see on your screenshots - that he's covering the line all the way from the Narva River to Velikiye Luki with the 16th and 18th AGN armies. There's even that SS non-elite division on the line, rather than garrisoning occupied territory...
In any case, we will see soon [:)]

That hole north of Velikie Luki may be a common problem with Soviet side players; Western Front pulls back mainly straight eastward, the three corps at Smolensk and to the east basically set up where they are, Northwest Front is deployed to the gaps between the giant lakes, Stavka reinforcements head straight west or southwest.

Anyways, the full Northwest front. Bletchley_Geek, yes, there are some Panzer and Motorised divisions (I saw them maybe 2 turns ago). Ah, you mean that he is only using the AGN forces: Panzer Group, 16th and 18th armies. Well, if Leningrad is not one of his objectives, I'm happy [8D]

In the Western Front he is pushing in the south! [8D] You're indeed correct Bletchley_Geek! That place (southern Russia) is perfect for tanks. I will discuss later what will be my defensive lines here: Bryansk, etc. In the north (just south of Smolensk) he hasn't advanced a lot though.

In the Southwest Front I guess he wants to encircle Kiev (but he is not using panzer or motorised divisions).

That concentration on your Smolensk - Gomel line is very worrisome. Your deployment there is not nearly as deep as the one you have north of Smolensk (and naturally so, I guess you reacted to his initial advances with AGC panzers). If he pushes hard with infantry and then uses the panzers he can create quite of a situation for you: he'll have opened the door to the Eastern Ukraine and Central Russia. That region features very bad terrain (that is, good for panzers).
Any ideas on how to alleviate or handle such a situation?
This is my plan. As I said before, I have to be between his most dangerous units and Moscow. And you're totally correct. Here he can do what he couldn't do since turn 1: massacre many of my units. So I have to be prudent [:)]

Yes, when they arrive they are basically worthless (except the tough Siberians): 3.000 men, low morale and experience... but when they are ready:
DAVAI DAVAI!!

The south, beyond the Dnepr, is a tricky place to try to defend. The computer got some leakers over the river between Chernigov and Kiev; I had to slap together units to slow them down. The main reason they didn't go wild is a shortage of units for the Axis, and I held the rail line through Chernigov for awhile, forcing air resupply for the most frontal Germans.
Allowing big holes is real bad; it takes 3 to 6 times as many units to contain a breakout as it does to form a solid unbroken line.

Can you do me a favour?
When showing the Kiev forts toggle on defensive cv value using the z key.
This would truly demonstrate how tough your defences are!

Sure [:)]
Well, er, as I see it, a Fort Level 2, 3 or 4 IS FAR better than a Fort Level 0 [8D] On the last turns he attacked in the corridor between Vitebsk and Smolensk with his infantry AND Panzers too. Clear hexes. Level forts I think maximum = 2. Somehow the forces managed to hold (that's why he is attacking now in the south, methinks).
They are Russians and in front of them there are the most professional soldiers of the world (Wehrmacht) but I still like those forts. I mean, it's all I have, so... [:D]

Perhaps his goal isn't to get to Moscow... right now, but to destroy your forces in the Ukraine.
In any case I will be following these battles with the utmost interest. [8D] And good luck!
