Looks like the Lex got sunk - congratulations! It launched a counter attack so the aircraft that were airborne when she was hit probably diverted to Rabaul or Gasmata, or both.

Martin made a special effort to get that turn back to me. I guess he didn't enjoy it as much as he had hoped...

My worry now is that if the other two CVs are not in SWPAC, will they be interfering with my operations at Tarawa and Canton Island?

And it still doesn't feel right playing the dark side!

Question: When a carrier sinks, do her planes on deck show up as op losses or on the ground? It's been too long. I can't remember.

I have just been lucky so far and Martin obviously did not know that early allied CAP is crap, even in quantity.

BTW check out the combat reports again... What altitudes did your bombers use, defaults 9,000 for B5N and 11,000 for D3A? What was the assigned patrol altitude(s) of his CAP? Higher isn't necessarily better...

5000ft and 14000ft respectively. I think his CAP was around 20000ft.

Here is the latest chart. I am finally getting ahead in vehicle production.

Here are the planes currently building. I may need more than 12 B5N1s a month if all I am doing it for is to use the Hikari pool up. I might ramp up to do the build in three months and then convert the factory to something I need.

And here are my engines. I am bringing the Tony engine forward so I can make sure I build a pool. What other engines will I need to advance? I am ramping up Ha32 production as I had an inadequate pool. How many will be enough?

I am glad I posted those. I just realised I am advancing the wrong engine for the Tony. Why do the different manufacturers have the same name for their engines? I hate playing the dark side - it makes my head hurt...

Edit Panic over. While changing my daughter's nappy I realised I am also advancing the Judy's engine. I think I have a few too many factories on them though, so may think about changing a factory over to the Ha-45 for the George...

Thanks for that. I already have enough B5N2 factories though, so may have to let it auto convert and then switch it off while I wait for the Jill.

26th December 1941

Central Pacific

The attached screenie shows my new patrol line forming up west of PH. Martin seems to have sent an ASW tf out to see where the line has moved to - clever boy! The insert is the DD that is damaged at Wake. Shall I leave her until the minor flooding has been sorted or will she make Kwajalein. I only ask because an allied DD would make it, but I know Jap damage control is not great. Edit Just realised the insert does not give the required details...

I-16 missed a DD at Christmas Island, but skilfully hugged the bottom to escape retribution.

The Tarawa force landed and took the atoll. The Tabiteuea force should land next turn. I realised that the Canton Island task force would be horribly exposed as it would run slap bang into any reaction to the earlier landings, so they are off to Nauru for now. The Tarawa landing force is reloading for Ocean Island.

South Pacific

USS Chicago was hit by a bomb from a Betty, followed by 2 more from Vals in the morning phase. A search plane then got in on the act (2 allied subs hit by my patrol planes elsewhere too) and she had disappeared when the pm raids got to the area. A Betty hit the already damaged DD that was with Chicago - a 250kg bomb blew up a magazine and then a 60kg bomb hit the sinking wreckage. She showed up on the sunk list as having been sunk by the 18 inch torpedo that hit her yesterday though.

Car Div 5 is withdrawing to Truk to replenish before heading back to rejoin the KB. Taiyo and the covering force are also heading back after having dropped off the soon to be withdrawn Claude unit aboard at start. I am starting to sort out my escorts as per Major Mike's suggestions in his "escort" thread. CA Haguro and some 5000 nm DDs are joining the Car Div 5 escort group from Truk. Ryujo and Zuiho converted their fighters to Zeroes while they replenished at Truk and are on their way back to sort out some PTs that are moving into Davao.

DEI and Malaya

1 Buff came up from Singers to have a pop at the first sweep. It survived fisticuffs with the Ki-43a's, but then got shot down when it tried the same thing with the c's that followed on. Flak seems quite heavy, but I am having to send my Sallies and Lilies in at 15k next time regardless as I need to start suppressing the airfield if I want to land Kuantan, let alone Mersing, especially as Hurricanes are due soon. A second amphib tf is joining the first to run into Kuantan. It contains a recon regiment and a base force.

The screenie shows my initial recon reports for Palembang. It appears to have been reinforced. I have had subs nearby, so it must have been by air...

The Philippines

Iba is too strongly held for what I sent there, so I am sending another infantry brigade and a tank regiment. I cannot afford to take heavy losses in the build up battles as I am doing the PI on a shoestring. Manila put up a CAP this turn, but Zero sweeps shot three P-40Es down. Clark was heavily hit in two raids.

China

I took quite heavy casualties to an infantry division at Chuhsien. Martin has finally realised that concentrated Chinese units are reasonable on the defence. I am switching over to bombardment attacks and will have to concentrate myself as the happy time is over...
