Remember to keep at least one unit of each of the old models on the map. Manchuoko is a good location. That way you can downgrade at the end of the war and expend all the airframes in the pool as kamikazes.

Huh? Why wouldn't I be able to just downgrade to a different airframe? I thought I read that as long as I don't have over 100 AC of a model they stay in the pool. If there is over 100 then it converts them into points or something - right?

You're referring to 13.8 Japanese Scrapping of Excess Aircraft.

You take the max ready values of all air units using a particular plane (including any reinforcement groups not yet on the map but due to come in at some point). If the number of planes of that type in the pool is greater than 99, then the computer automatically scraps all planes in excess of ten times the max ready value of all air groups using the plane - but always leaves at least 99 in the pool.

1 resource point for each engine is added to Osaka for each plane scrapped.

In practice it's hard to get to a situation where aircraft are scrapped.

Let's take those light 1E bombers that start - about 400 of them.

You'd need to have over 4,000 of them in the pool to have them scrapped.

Let's say you only leave one daitai using a specific light bomber - say 24 - then if you have anything over 240 of that plane type in the pool, it gets scrapped.

Conversely, if you have no daitai using them, your pool will be limited to 99.

So, as Mike says, keep one daitai of each light bomber hidden away somewhere so that you can maintain a large pool of these 1E bombers without them being scrapped for use as kamikazes later in the war.

I'm still working on getting a definitive answer to the statement I made earlier. CT Grognard is correct above, but I'll let you know if my statement is correct as soon as I get a reply.

Are you referring to the parachute assault question?

No. That one was answered. My statement was incorrect. The AV is not halved. My new question is the validity of this statement:

I believe that if there are no air units on map or in the reinforcement queue for a certain model, you can not "downgrade" an air unit back to that model. It's not in the manual anywhere though that I could find.

You're referring to 13.8 Japanese Scrapping of Excess Aircraft.

You take the max ready values of all air units using a particular plane (including any reinforcement groups not yet on the map but due to come in at some point). If the number of planes of that type in the pool is greater than 99, then the computer automatically scraps all planes in excess of ten times the max ready value of all air groups using the plane - but always leaves at least 99 in the pool.

1 resource point for each engine is added to Osaka for each plane scrapped.

In practice it's hard to get to a situation where aircraft are scrapped.

Let's take those light 1E bombers that start - about 400 of them.

You'd need to have over 4,000 of them in the pool to have them scrapped.

Let's say you only leave one daitai using a specific light bomber - say 24 - then if you have anything over 240 of that plane type in the pool, it gets scrapped.

Conversely, if you have no daitai using them, your pool will be limited to 99.

So, as Mike says, keep one daitai of each light bomber hidden away somewhere so that you can maintain a large pool of these 1E bombers without them being scrapped for use as kamikazes later in the war.

Ahhhh - thanks for explaining this to me. I had thought that if I went over 100 AC and they weren't in production the remainder were sucked off. This makes much more sense now for gathering the late-war kamakazi force.

Thanks. In my game with Nemo I had pretty good sub action too. I'm pretty sure that detection levels from search aircraft inhance the chances of successful sub encounters with enemy shipping (of course I have to have subs in the area to vector in - lol). That's part of the reason why I'm builidng recon/search AC with the long legs.

JWE has been a good resource for me also. He's been real good about helping me get into the extended map with this mod.

I'm really looking 4ward to seeing another update come out with Michaelm's beta changes. I'll have to update the user's manual heavily but it'll be worth it! [8D]

I have downgraded with PDU on. With the latest beta, there may be a PP charge for the change, but you can do it.

Well there are no Jeans on the map nor are there any in the reinforcement queue but I can upgrade my TB air groups to this model so I would say that this myth is busted. [:D][:D]

Edit: Now, the only concern about airframes is the number in the pool vs. the number in air units (*10).

I do not know about PDU OFF, but when PDU is ON yo can upgrade downgrade whenever you want.
