Sid, what is the effect of a stone resource site?

I do not understand your term "stone resource site"
but I can comment on this rather unique location - one of several added in AUS
mostly because of things I learned from Cobra years ago.

Normanton has two possible values for the Allies - and one for Japan.
First - it is an air base - and a tiny static air support element (of QANTAS to support
the Empire Flying Boats) permits its usage immediately - it was needed
because the boats could not make the run from Darwin to Melbourne (I think it was)
without refueling. It could be built up into a base to cover the NE area - as several
sites can be.

Otherwise - it is in real life an export port for resources from nearby Karumba -
which is hopelessly involved with a mangrove swamp and useless as a port itself.
The resources will (slowly) export themselves to Normanton - UNLESS you build
up the port to level 3 - in which case - they will automatically transfer as required.

For the enemy, Normanton offers a neat invasion location. It won't be easy to
bring AUS land forces to bear in strength - lacking lines of communication.
And they won't like a Japanese base there - so it will divert their attention until
they clear it out - saving Japan a lot of trouble with bomber raids into the NEI -
which are a nightmare for Japan - as well as diverting troops from invasion duties
in various places outside Austraila.

Normanton was promoted to be the star port of the North - in competition with Darwin -
but it lost out in the end. It could, however, be developed considerably - and in some
situations - enemy presence in New Guinea in particular - it might be a good idea to
do that. Not to mention if you are there in strength - they can hardly invade easily.

Note the Norman River is navigable - and potentially a threat. Similarly - up by Darwin -
Timber Creek is a peculiar port - wholly uninhabited - used until just before the war
began to export more cattle than any other in the world! That river up there is also
navigable, and could be used by invasion forces - although they better bring their own
supplies. WITP correctly increases supply usage in the desert - and there is NO local
supply worthy of the name in the area. But in RHS, where rivers can be used, there
is also the possibility they might be used to flank or cut lines of supply. As you have
found in China, hitting ships in rivers isn't totally easy! You sailed right through my
gunboat flotilla - and some even lived to tell their grandchildren about it.

Regretfully (from a Japanese point of view), even more effective.

Here the effect is caused because RHS uses the actual bomb loads - with the right size bombs - and these Japanese bombers use
relatively small 50 kg bombs. A Ki-21 carries 15 to extended range, and 20 to normal range - far more than the 4 you are used to
in stock and mods based on stock. I am not even certain a Ki-21 could carry a 250 kg bomb (as in stock)? According to Francillon,
during its considerable development, the bomb load never changed. Ki-48s are similar - with 50 kg bombs used to normal range -
and the same number of 25 kg bombs to extended range - keeping the count up.

The Allies - on the other hand - have their cake and get to eat it too. You will note your aircraft types have notes after the name -
GP for example means General Purpose bombs - and there are even worse cases for soft targets in due course. Later in the war
incendary and fragmentation bomb loads are available. The first of these is the B-25G Mitchell ICB - with 4x 400 pound ICB clusters
as well as 4x 100 pound ICB clusters - I think each weapon is a cluster of three - and so it amounts to carrying 12 x 133 pound plus
12 x 33 pound bombs each (to normal range). The B-29B ICB is far worse - with no less than 16x 400 pound clusters plus 8x
100 pounders. These will devastate soft targets - and the B-25G is famous for its effect on airflelds - being specially modified in AUS for this
mission and kept in service for it when later models came off the line. Soft targets include land units, airfields, cities (if you believe
in strategic bombing - I do not - and regard it as both illegal and immoral - and both my parents were in B-17s). As well - the many small
bombs work re unarmored ships better than fewer larger ones do.

No - and in fact the effects you see are a result of toned down bombs. The soft effect of an HE bomb
or shell is related to the square root of its weight - not its full weight as in stock. So not only do small
bombs penetrate armor less, they also have less effect - per each. Nevertheless, small bombs in
big numbers are far more effective than fewer large ones in re soft targets - and that is deliberately modeled
here. Also - I have used the principle of concentration of force. This is a big raid for the Japanese -
and when you mount out similar size raids with non-Japanese bombers - it will be far worse. Except for the
Hudson - the most Japanese like Allied bomber - most Allied bombers have much bigger loads. These
tend to carry smaller bombs than in stock - although over time the Allies get variants with the same number
of bombs but larger in size. In general, your bombers start with 250 pound bombs (except for obsolescent
planes like the Dutch use) - and most improve to 500 pounders by midwar. And the design philosophy of
the bombers is different - WITP does not permit really heavy loads at short range - so what you see is the
normal and extended range loads. For Japan normal load range = maximum load range, but not so for the
Allies - most bombers could carry at least twice the loads we show if range was short. In the Pacific, this was
rare - range mattered - so most went to normal or even extended range. Some of your planes have special
bomb bay tanks that extend the range even more - but here - Sally pioneers with a small 500 litre one -
oddly not reducing her load at all - a development in the war with China before we got involved. But the Allies
take the idea to a much greater length. Your first plane with these - maybe also your best - is the LB-30 -
which gets astronomical ranges as transport or bomber - although you don't get many and cannot alter the
production rate. Your extreme case is former bombers turned into specialist recon planes - something the
G3M2KAI is demonstrating just now - planes that can fly from Hawaii to anywhere on the map - take pictures -
and return. These come mid war and just get better (not only more range, but better cameras and imaging
radar) as time goes by. Their former bomb bays are full of fuel. LB-30 (under several names) is a compromise -
with fuel in one bay - bombs in the other. There are also peculiar specialist planes - the Mosquito in particular -
with unbelievable range using drop tanks. Not to mention the fantastic P-51 - for which I will trade you one for one
any Axis plane you want - not that you would agree or that the game would permit it! And the P-47 is virtually as
bad - and available in astronomical numbers eventually. You don't even need proper bombers if you have these
planes!

Only once did the DDs take a hit - in four days of air strikes. Just as IRL,
the DD will likely make it to fight somewhere else - never mind they began at Hong
Kong. But the gunboats - that also made it to Singapore - won't - as you left
them in China.

Too bad the action didn't come two days later - two carrier forces with fine heavy
cruiser escorts are inbound for these waters - where an offensive is about to begin.
But it was a gamble to send them out uncovered. Most such gambles paid off - this
one didn't. Well played.

Then came news of a group raid by JAAF fighters 80 nm into Soviet territory,
near Rybolov. Curiously, a smaller number of ancient Russian biplanes achieved
a 6:1 loss ratio - impressive even if they had a decisive altitude advantage.

These incursions by your forces will nor be tolerated. The air battle demonstrates superior qualities of Russian men and materials. In addition, this experience shows a complete lack of command and control on your part. We will not stand down. We also do not respect your idle threats. Take your planes and control your men.

Obviously you need to be sent to a diplomacy school. This is not the ideal way to prevent a war from breaking out on a new front.

FYI - as a designer - my purpose in active Russians was to give the Allies things they cannot have if they are passive.

YOU have control of where units are - they are not greyed out - frozen in places not where you wish.

YOU have control of where you build fortifications or airfields or ports. They are not locations you cannot access.

YOU have control of if you go to war - it is not a Japanese only prerogative. This should deter a Japanese player from stripping
Kwangtung Army - to use it against you other places. AE game mechanisms punish a Japanese player who does not keep a certain
amount of ground troops in the area - but he could strip 100% of the planes - and not incure a penalty. In RHS - hopefully - this
will not be considered.

Then there is the matter of uncertainty. I do not like rigid certainty - or one player with total power. I prefer that when things
go South - as well as IF they go South - to be under a sort of mutal control - where neither side can be sure what the other may do?
Nevertheless, the Russians IRL honored the treaty - and I expect a game player to do so as well - unless there is some cause so
great Stalin would have turned them loose. The Japanese were not really angels in this area - Manchukuo and Korea before it were RUSSIAN
territory taken by them - note in wars they won - and they planned to keep up the process into Siberia writ large - taking everything from
Chita East for themselves (a vast area rich in resources). But they were diverted by the need for oil - Siberia didn't have enough ready to
exploit in identified locations. The war with US, UK and their other allies was too big to permit an offensive North. So, however
reluctantly, I expet them to behave as well - at least unless the war goes so well they can actually contemplate another conquest.

I am aware the allies can slow stop air frame production. Can I increase allied air production in this mod?

Unfortunately not.

I was forced to go the other way:

you get to produce the Wild Catfish - a float version of the F4F -
for which we have art (from RHSEOS in WITP days)
but unlike that mod - which is ahistorical - in this one - it is simply
because it was developed - too late probably.

If you don't like it - don't produce it. In other words, you can turn
it off - but you cannot increase its rate.

In general, for most types, I start production small, and allow you to
"repair" up until it is big. You don't have to do that - and may spend 1000
supply points for every factory you do not repair as a reward. Thus your
control is negative - but not positive. It would take a complete rewrite of
code to give the Allies similar production ability to the Japanese. Matrix
refuses to consider it - even for a whole new WITP version. They figure
you are a theater boss, not a production tzar - and you don't get to decide
that sort of thing.

IF I ever do a Japan enhansed scenario - I did about four in WITP days -
we might put in more things - based on different assumptions. But players
only have limited control of production on the Allied side.

I am considering more conversion options. Right now - Japan gets Shinano as a
carrier - but can "convert" it to a Yamato class battleship. Same with Ibuki - it
gets a light carrier - but can convert it to a CA. I could do that with your CVLs -
let em convert to CL - or in one class case - to CA. It turns out this is the way to do it
because a carrier version of a hull takes about 111 days less time to build than a gunship
version of the same hull. Of course, you cannot convert a gunship to a carrier in a time
efficient way - but I pretend the ship was always intended to be the gunship if a player
elects to take the (immediate) conversion option. It just is building for more time.

More esoteric, USN AVs were DESIGNED to be CVS - and in fact the Langley is now a CVS -
and you CAN put small floatplanes on it and use it that way! Because it was. USN elected
not to mount the catapults on most of the OTHER AVs - but it could easily be done and that
was the original design concept. So I could make AV convert to CVS
- but I have not done a comprehensive ship update - at least not yet. I would love to put
in The Lone Ranger if I can get filmstrip help - so called because only one was built. But
the biggest plane factory on the planet (at Renton Washington) was built (with seaplane
ramp) for it! It remained the biggest until Boeing Everette was built a generation later.
But if actual planning and investment counts, it was a serious option. Eventually they
decided to make B-29s in the plant instead. RHSBBO was a version in which both sides
got what they planned for - more gunships - more flying boats and seaplanes. We might
try for a version in which you get all - and need to turn off production of what you don't want.

While the historical OB is just that - it isn't a balanced fleet - as USN teaches the idea -
and more gunships might really make sense.

I had no less than 6 CV, 4 CVL/CVE, and 3 CVS in range
of detected naval targets with 33 squadrons or elements of
aircraft

and almost as many land based units set to engage naval
units

but except in China my air strikes failed to launch

The loss of the small TF near Borneo was expensive -
thousands of troops on board - clearly sending uncovered
TFs is unwise with a player who does not simply run!

But you were lucky - it was the 3 DD from Hong Kong,
likely in transit.

I now have two major surface TFs and two carrier TFs in
the area - so perhaps we will see some real action.

This was the first airborne assault opposed I have tried with
the new values of devices.

Actually

Cynthia Olsen was the first ship sunk in the war
and a COMMERCIAL watercraft - not a yacht (which, I admit, there are in the game).
Note many of the Chinese vessels have names in Chinese (go figure, as I am a
China hand) - and a few are famous.

Cynthia Olsen had a GERMAN comodore as her captain, but he was a US citizen,
and he saved his entire crew - in spite of the burning loss of the ship. See
Advance Force Pearl Harbor if you want lots of details.

I note that in stock we have an "empty sea" - almost every vessel involved in early actions is
missing (like this one) or safely in a West Coast port - thousands of miles from harm. I have
tried to put in ships that will let you see names that really were involved in "the slaughter at
sea" of early days.

Only in this game, the slaughter seems to be going both ways! It is more like how I play than
most Allied players do. I believe in the offensive defensive rather than the run, bastion up and
wait to come back with overwhelming forces.
