I'm stuggling to see the connection between the upgrades to the new '43 rifle squads and my large numbers of men in the manpower pool (300K+ and growing fast) - what am I missing?

Well, your armaments are being used somewhere. Now, the problem is that they are not being used to build rifle squads. To make up for the low TOE, I see them building tube fired weapons. See the image for an example. Because the rifle squads cannot convert, the engine tries to make up for it by taking the more expensive weapon types up to 100%.

So you apply my workaround to get the engine to build rifle squads.

Does this answer your question?

Got it - Thanks for the explanation.

We decided that Jim will restore upgrade paths for the rifle squads and we will make a small code fix to implement it for the ongoing games.

[&o][&o][&o] Pavel any idea how long it will take to implement?

Hopefully not so long. It should go out to testers today or tomorrow and released as public beta shortly after that.

Great! I hope this will be enough to solve the problem without more complicated code changes. Will this be done for all squads or just rifle squads? I mean Motor-Inf Squads, Engineer Squads, Mech-Inf Squads. What will be done about overlapping squads? Example:

Instead of:
HU Rifle Squad 1-39 to 12-44 no upgrade
HU Rifle Squad 1-44 to 9-45
this:
HU Rifle Squad 1-39 to 6-44 upgrades to:
HU Rifle Squad 7-44 to 9-45

DV's panzer/mech/Mot divisions are getting zero squads so there is something very wrong there also.

My game is not far enough into 44 yet to see the impact.

Thanks for quick work.

Greetings!

I am trying to follow this discussion and I do not understand why the game should start using 1943 German squad (#82) upgrade from January . These squads were not in use
from 1/43 on anyway, they could start earliest around 8/43.

Reason:
The 9 men squad organization became official with Infanterie Division N.A. KstN starting 10/43. In addition the device #181 (panzerfaust) was not used that early either.
The first order of Faustpatrone (Panzerfaust 30 klein) was delivered (all 500 pieces) by the manufacturer, HASAG Hugo Schneider AG, Werk Schlieben, in August 1943 for troops.

Note: I admit that this comment is partially motivated by my post (German TOE (OB) ERRATA) in general discussion about the need to fix the TOE mistakes!

Send your PBeM game file saves to Joel Billings.

Any game past Jan 43

Please take a look at my updated TOE detail files: fb.asp?m=3243508

I have upgraded the code so it shows element availability during TOE's "lifetime", showing how many months the element itself is available, when it's upgrades or downgrades are available and when only alternatives or nothing is available.

Maybe this will help to find problematic entries, although since I now believe that new TOE with new elements proscribed, that inherits old elements from previous TOE will not help much in conversion into alternatives, this report will not help to identify all issues.

Example:

Code: Select all

[389] 43b SS Panzergrenadier Division -> [490] 43e SS Panzergrenadier Division
 Mechanized Combat Division, 42/11 - 43/06
    9 Panzer Pioneer Squad (Mech-Engr Squad) ++UUUUUU
   12 50mm Anti-tank Gun (AT Gun) +++33333
    6 Hummel (SP Artillery) DD.+++++
This part of report shows that:
Panzer Pioneer Squad is available for the first 2 months of TOE's lifetime, for the last 6 months a direct upgrade is available.
50mm Anti-tank Gun is available for the first 3 months of TOE's lifetime, for the last 5 months 3 alternatives are available (probably will not swap).
A direct downgrade from Hummel (of type SP Artillery) is available for the first 2 months of TOE's lifetime, for one month nothing is available, and for the last 5 months Hummel is available.

Updated my reports to show when there are no upgrade paths from elements in older TOEs to elements in newer TOEs.

Code: Select all

[340] 43 Infantry Division -> [126] 44 Infantry Division
 Infantry Combat Division, 42/11 - 43/08
  336 Rifle Squad 11++++++++ [.]

This identifies the problem we have in the current version.
