All this arguing about the rifle the guy on the right was carrying, clearly VN era. I'm surprised no one commented on the mic cable the guy on the left is using, calling in an air strike, perhaps. You think they had cables like that in Korea?

Reference the type of Mi6 rifle used in the post: As far as I can tell from the photo & blowup, it's either an M16 or M16A1. The M16A1 corrected deficiencies with the original M16: a chromium-lined barrel, which greatly reduced corrosion and fouling; a forward assist, which would properly seat a cartridge in the chamber, and a full flash suppressor, not the three-pronged "can opener" type. I can't tell from the photo which is which. The M16A1's forward assist is located on the right side of the upper receiver, which is hidden from view by the grunt holding the kids, and we only see the left side (of the rifle) of the grunt working the radio. Can't quite make out the flash suppressor. As to the M16A2: this rifle was introduced to the US military in bulk roughly late 1985. I know this because I changed duty stations (in the Army) in summer 1986; prior to that, my unit had M16A1's, but when I arrived to my new unit (a newly-forming infantry battalion) we were issued factory-fresh M16A2's. The -A2 also used a different 5.56mm round than the previous rifles, based on changes to the barrel.

No one mentioned Korea. The soldiers were Korean and fought in Vietnam using some US equipment.

Divorced nearly fourteen years now. Every time I start 'dating' again I'm reminded why.[X(] A bit sad I guess, but what can you do, I'm 'gun' shy. When I see the red flags, I move on.[;)]

As in Rustysi refuses to get involved with communist women. I must say I understand where he is coming from; I once had a rather unfortunate episode with Gertrude, a 16-stone pig-iron smelter from Gdansk. Red flags are a no-no for me too ever since.

Hey, she's with the fashion police, and I would say the guy deserves to be arrested at gunpoint!

Both

"Downed U.S. airman Dewey Waddell was taken captive by Vietnamese communist fighters in 1967, and he was released in 1973. The photo, taken by GDR war correspondent Thomas Billhardt, features a female guerrilla holding an American soldier captive and escorting him on a country road. The picture was created for propaganda purpose, hence the use of a really small woman as the guard to make the captured airman look more unheroic."
