Hi, the two small German xAPs were used historically to transfer personnel, food, spare parts etc. between the various bases used by German forces and to fetch diesel in drums from Balikpapan fo the U-boats. In my mod you will eventually get small German base forces representing the infrastructure the Kriegmarine established throughout the empire to support the U-boats, raiders and blockade runners.

The withdrawal date actually does not work for Japan. The ships with a withdrawal date should be put in a port in the backwaters and no longer be used after that date.

No Japanese civilians in this game, some place like Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa and Formosa might be candidates, but no location slots left...

Thank you. Great tips. This makes them useful and precious. I shall look out for the German base forces and do my best to avoid the nasty Allies locating and destroying my game within a game.

Not sure if Mundy has mentioned in his AAR but our game is in a short period of inactivity due to my ending up in hospital last Saturday. I fell ill after work last Thursday and in little time I was running 40 degree temps and becoming badly dehydrated until my wife, the ambulance and a fine body of medical people and their support staff stepped in to intervene. Turns out I picked up a prostate infection and was well crook for a few days. Still in hospital but all is looking good for a release by Friday and then perhaps a return to the fray.

A most welcome return home after an most unexpected Christmas stay in hospital. High level antibiotics are my new friend.

THOUGHTS ON THIS TURN

The Chinese naval bombardment at Ichang reminds me that Bottleneck China is a beast I am still to understand. So far, I have paid it scant attention apart from the usual fixation with Hong Kong and some tentative thoughts on Wenchow. Hong Kong fell quickly and has freed up plenty of artillery and an independent division for the Philippines and Singapore. Wenchow appears to have been vacated with only a single administrative unit being identified during bombing runs over the last couple of days. I’m inclined to send in a parachute unit on the next turn and see if I can take it on the cheap although this may not be too cool an idea as I think Wenchow has forts around level 4. Even an administrative unit could be difficult to winkle out behind forts of that size. Perhaps do some bombardments and then send in a seaborne invasion plus the parachutes and see how that goes. Most assets are in place to do so and could be pulled together within a few days. I want the land troops to come from Samah and there are some nasty looking small MTB craft hanging around Hong Kong. They will have to be dealt with before my soldiers make the run from Samah to Wenchow.

Those B-17s are making a right royal pain of themselves. None of the ships which were struck by bombs has succumbed and all fires are out. They will come back to the fold in time if I can deter the big bombers. There will be fighters to meet them should they return.

Chiyoda has started the process of increasing the size of the Home Island based float plane groups, so I can get my search pilot training up and away.

THOUGHTS ON THIS TURN

The big bombers returned to Kompong Trach and this time Oscar was ready to meet them. At the very least they put their bomb aim off and caused some damage. 2 pilots are now showing as having a kill each so perhaps a couple of the big machines never made it home.

After moving one of the Air HQ at Takao I forgot to reload the other Air HQs with torpedoes. Hence the very abysmal results where Betty was using bombs instead of torpedoes.

The Tawi Tawi result was so unexpected. I knew that shipping from Manila was on the move. Half of KB was near Babeldaob and made a speed run to get into position to sink some merchant shipping. My complacency was shattered when Repulse and Prince of Wales popped up in the target hairs. Reasonable results and I think the weather had a lot to do with these 2 ships and company still being above the water. One of the Kakus didn’t even send off the whole of its Kate complement, and the Val presence was sketchy to say the least. I’ve rolled the dice with the half KB staying in the area to try and finish something off if they are running slow. Cruisers are racing up from Babeldaob to help and the Straits of Makassar have a healthy showing of Japanese submarines waiting for injured warships. Next turn could be dire for me, fizzle out or have some good results for me.

And what is this. A small USN TF heading towards the Marshall Islands? I think Ed might be testing out my threadbare defences in this area. Torpedo armed Nells are at the ready and waiting in the wings is the other half of KB. I'm going for this to be nothing more than a test but then again something more deadly might lurk over the horizon.

THOUGHTS ON THIS TURN

No sign of Repulse. Is it possible that she succumbed to a mere 2 torpedoes? Prince of Wales may have suffered a speed reduction as she had not moved too far. A couple of more torpedoes into POW and that may just be enough for the waiting submarines to finish her off. Houston is also not looking in good shape. There is a mass of shipping coming out of Manilla. A couple of battle groups (2 Kongos and 4 Mogami) are heading towards the Celebes Sea to try and get amongst the action. Some good-looking prizes amongst this lot. Reduced KB is all out of torpedoes and will have to make do with bombs. Hoping that we are well out of Allied torpedo bomber range. Dutch fighters made a show but not too much damage suffered.

A fast developing situation at Eniwetok. That TF that has turned up at Eniwetok is reported doing 33 knots and it did move 13 hexes last turn. KB East is ready to pull the trigger. The Kako cruiser group is on the way from Truk. Nells are poised to launch although failed to do so last turn.

Most troubling is the radio intercept to the south. I fear USN CVs maybe in the area. Not good news for Kaga and company if this is so.

So it appears that Ed is making a dash at capturing undefended Eniwetok. If so I hope this will be a short lived endeavour. A SNLF unit is loading at Truk to deal with and such incursion.

And at Eniwetok the 4 Kakos get an outing. No overly successful but they did manage to account for one of the interlopers. Looks like Ed is on an annoying mission to sow mines where I do not want them. The eastern half of the KB mysteriously failed to launch any air strikes at these venerable USN destroyers. Shall have to put that down to the vagaries of the weather.

An early Allied move against the Marshalls is a waste of assets IMO.

If those Allied DDs are running around at full speed, they should be low on fuel now - and Pearl is far away.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. The hospital experience was most unexpected and I am so grateful for a superb medical team and that includes nurses, cleaners the lot.

As for those Marshall Island DDs they are a nuisance and difficult to pin down. Probably due to their speed. I'm leery of chasing them towards PH just in case USN carriers are in residence. I'm thinking of countering them by employing my own mines and a couple of midget subs at the bases they seem interested in visiting. The eastern KB has had no luck in sending a bombing group their way and I want them back at Truk to replenish and then cover the Rabaul landings.

THOUGHTS FROM THIS TURN

Shipping from Hong Kong continues to flee south chased by bombers and destroyers. The enemy minefields at begin to be cleared from Hong Kong.

For something different river based shore bombardment deep within China. Not much damage but every little bit must help.

A successful night intercept accounts for one of the marauding DMs from Pearl Harbour. Heavy rain forestalls the Kako SAG from obtaining a better result.

I have but a few submarines patrolling the sea lanes from San Francisco, but one gets lucky finding a lone merchantman.

A good clean up in the Celebes/Sulu Sea and Makassar Strait by surface ships and KB DEI. On the down side most of the sunk ships are 1 VP ships. Ed is probably happy to have them off his list to concentrate on utilizing better cargo haulers. The Dutch subs also weigh with a torpedo hit on DD Maikaze. She has awful damage of 50 72(62) 20(16) 19. Was going to scuttle her but couldn’t find the button. Distant memory chimed in that system damage needs to be 90 and above I think. Maikaze shall have to gamely forge on. She is way too far from a friendly base to think she could survive. First of the Dutch bombers encountered and I consider them worthy of respect. Finally, in this area Ed gets a look at the composition of KB DEI. Regrettable but not surprising considering the congested waters.

DD Maikaze continues gamely onwards. Her situation is rapidly deteriorating with damage now climbing to 62 85(62) 31 (16) 12. All categories have risen and significantly fires are on the increase.

xAKL Tientsin Maru is also in a bad way although surprisingly she didn’t sink outright. She is disbanded at San Fernando fighting a minor fire and probably unable to do a thing about the flooding. Damage is 25 84(46) 00 02.

First recon reports from Singapore arrive today. I’m surprised at the number of ships reported in harbour – 84. Plenty of fighters and bombers on hand to cause me problems. 24 land units reported to be holed up here.

5th Indpt Coy arrives at Tokyo=

The first 8 converted ACMs have arrived at Yokohama. They will be sent off to ports with minefields which have been slowly depleting since day 1.

A nice pick up by Nell and Betty operating out of Formosa. Apart from the sunk ships sighting reports reveal a TF of enemy ships moving east away from the Philippines. The 4 Kakos SAG TF at Truk is ordered north with a view to intercepting these ships if they stay on course.
