Surface radars don't see further than the horizon, so they will not help you to detect a ship better in daylight and good visual conditions.

Yeah, I know about the radar. I was more concerned about the fact that it did not help running away, allowing the enemy close to 8KYD. Lexington was 100% repaired and able to go @ 33 knots, while other ships, including IJN ones, were limited by 32 knots.
