Steam is running in the background regardless of whether, or not, you have to log in to steam to play a game you downloaded from Steam. Its using resources.

Steam also hijacks my computer at boot-up and updates itself before my computer has finished booting, dragging out the boot process.

I HATE Steam with a passion.

I HATE that I HAD to set up a Steam account to validate the installation of Skyrim.

Have I mentioned that I truly HATE Steam?

Same here. Steam constantly auto-updates on boot, stifling my Firefox, which cannot load any webapage during the auto-update procedure. Sometimes it takes me 3-5 minutes to open the WITP:AE pages after the boot. A simple UPDATE YES/NO pop-up box on boot would be user-friendly, but we can't have that.

To prevent Steam from running on every boot, press the Windows key + R.

Then type 'services.msc' as shown below.

In the services window, click on the 'Name' column to sort by name, then find the Steam entry:

Double-click it and change the setting from 'Automatic' to 'MANUAL'. DO NOT disable the service, otherwise Steam won't run even when you try to run it yourself.

Also, use the handy utility Autoruns by Microsoft to prune what runs on boot. Just uncheck what you don't want to run; although be cautious, as you can disable things which your system needs. If in doubt, don't do it - but you can at least eliminate the obvious ones. I recommend not using it for services, as unchecking those completely disables them. Better to go into the services window and select 'Manual' so your system can still run the service when it's required.

You see, Steam was set in the Services to MANUAL as default, yet it auto-updates on boot every time. Annoying.

Hmmmm.... try Autoruns and use the filter feature. For me, there is only the Steam service and Steam doesn't update unless I run it first.

Steam might have set something up in Task Scheduler on your machine - I don't recall having anything on my machine, but if there was I probably deleted it long ago. In any case, it doesn't hurt to have a look with Autoruns. Also search for 'Valve' if 'Steam' doesn't turn anything up in the filter.

Seems that did the trick. Mozilla now starts without the webpage lag.

Well they can change the codes for loading up, without too much grief, but that is a big IF there.
