Happy New Year Andrew. Great to see the work being done. Any idea of release date?

While you are at it, it appears there's been a railway link between Canberra and Goulburn since 1924.

If you update the map again it would be nice to have the rail in Australia extended from Ouyen (79,165) one hex north to Mildura (80,164).

There are a few Australian Militia units there and it would be nice to load them on rail vice marching one hex south to Ouyen.

Mildura and Melbourne were connected via rail running through Ballarat and Ouyen in 1903.

Looks like you are right. I will make that adjustment for the next update. Thanks.

Thank you, very minor but possibly the first error I found when I started playing the game.

Concerning "The terrain art in hexes 80,13, 81,14 and 81,15 changed from Clear to Forest+Rough so that the map art matches the existing map data."

From Google Earth it looks like there are two roads, a western (actually southern) which passes from Hami through desert terrain and then a mountain pass to Urumchi and a eastern (actually northern) road which passes first through mountains and then through what might pass for desert at 81,15 - but then follow the two hexes 81, 14 and 80,13 which are actually pretty clear - and cultivated (if you zoom-in on Google Earth). Don't think "Forest+Rough" is the best choice here.

Top map is DaBabes, below my take on the Google Earth view.

If you zoom in on a satellite map, you'll see that the majority of the north side of the mountain range that runs between Hami and Urumchi - down into the flatlands - is heavily forested. Now one could certainly quibble about what constitutes the majority of the terrain, but military units deployed in that part of the landscape would have plenty of cover and would have no problem interdicting travel along that northern road (which definitely is in the "clear").

I suspect we could have this conversation regarding almost every hex on the map, but in answer to the question, "is this section of the map heavily forested at least in part? The answer is "yes".

There is also the consideration that there has probably been a great deal of deforestation in the last 80 years.

I created the Chinese road network from copies of contemporary road maps, but I can no longer find the map copies I used at the time, so I can't check this particular road.

Noted. Thanks.

I have been busy with some scenario stuff, so it will still be a few weeks before I can update the maps again.

Kull & Andrew, you have some points there. Just found it odd to have woodlands surrounded by deserts.

I don't because depending upon the prevailing winds, there would be more precipitation caused by the uplifting of the air caused by the hills, and/or mountains. Whether the forests directly benefit from the rain, the ground water which is recharged, and/or some other reason I can easily see this.

Also, apparently not that many thousands of years ago the area was actually forested and the Chinese are digging an underground tunnel to divert water that is going to the Arctic Ocean through the old USSR and is running into problems with a lot of water under the desert.

I have prepared another updated version of the stock (official) map, which now includes the following additional fixes/changes:
  • The rail line on Shikoku Japan, between Takamatsu (hex 107,59) and hex 107,60 has been removed.
  • A minor railway line has been added connecting the railway in hex 106,59 and Kochi (hex 106,60).
  • The data for the secondary road between Takamatsu (hex 107,59) and Kochi (hex 106,60) has been corrected.
  • A phantom river has been removed from the hexside between hexes 75,128 and hex 74,127 in Australia.
  • A phantom river has been removed from the hexside between hexes 211,26 and hex 210,27 in Canada.
  • River hexside data added for the river hexside between hexes 90,114 and 89,113 in Dutch New Guinea.
  • Mildura (hex 80,164) is now connected by railway to hex 79,165.
  • Canberra (hex 87,169) is now connected by railway to hex 88,168.

As always, many thanks to those who have posted corrections and suggestions. If anyone has further suggestions then please feel free to post them here, and I can check them out.

The updated map is available at this website:
War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition: Updated Official Map

I now plan to make a similar update to my extended map, but that will take a week or so.

Andrew,

I commented in the general WITP AE forum on the missing road in the Kendari hex (70 106), but just in case I am posting here too.

Thanks for your efforts!

Mike

Andrew,

I just noticed that Kendari does not have minor road connections to the two adjacent hexes.
Is this intended?

Thanks Nomad. I did notice when you mentioned it, and a fix for that was added in my last update. My new(ish) map website has the latest version.

Reid River (1 hex SE of Townsville) at 92, 145 has a port level 1(1) yet it has no access to the sea. Did the land rise or did the Dutch build levees and drain the water?
