He did say shifting down to 16 bit art would bring that requirement down. That is still remarkable, perhaps there are some complex battle animations, 3D effects or something being considered, although that seems unlikely to suck up that much juice.

Eye candy is dandy, but gameplay is the key. There have been some pretty good card/event driven games published lately (Blitzkrieg General, Paths of Glory, Age of Napoleon) and I've always thought that the ability of a computer to hold a lot more data than a deck of cards could lead to a game of this type with an impressive variety of events, leading to a lot of replay value. I would rather have a lot of options in the gameplay department than the graphics department.

It's been a while since I've looked in the forums (unlike a lot of folks here -- and this isn't a slam! -- I have a LOT of things that keep me busy (paid work, volunteer work running two different non-profit orgranizations, Civ III, Train Dispatcher, preparing for this year's fantasy baseball season...)). Just spent well over an hour reading through the complete forum for GGWaW, though, and just have to say I'm looking forward to it. At the start I was bothered by some of the same things other folks have brought up, mainly the appearance of being simplistic ("Advanced Risk" was my first thought after seeing the screen shots, too), but wading through all the questions and responses has been enlightening. I'll admit, though, that I am glad WitP is first in the queue -- while UV sounds good, I prefer full-war games to scenarios, and am eagerly awaiting what is to me a much-upgraded Pacific War!
