That would be the biggest understatement since Noah said "It's going to rain...." [:D]
[:D][:D][:D][:D]
By the way, another interesting piece of history. The first Spitfire arrived in India in summer 1943 and the first Spitfire victory on the Burma front was in 8 November 1943. It seems to me that again WITP is one year earlier than RL.
In November 1943, the few air battles above N Burma/E India opposed Ki-43-II to Hurricane and Mohawk Oscars were involved in the following battles:
on the 9th vs Mohawks, 1 Oscar lost
on the 14th vs B-24J, 4 Oscars and 3 B-24J lost
on the 16th, vs P-38J, no loss
on the 23rd, vs Hurricane, 1 Hurricane shot down (it was a swep by two Sentai, and 56 Hurri and 10 Spit scrambled... but most didn't contact the raiders, and only one damaged Oscar was claimed).
on the 24th, vs US bombers (no more details), 1 Oscar lost
on the 25th, vs P-51A, B-25, 3 or 4 P-51A lost
on the 27th, vs B-24, B-25, P-38 and P-51A, 1 Ki-43, 1 Ki-45 and 1 Ki-44 (only one available) against 4 P-51A, 3 B-24 and 2 P-38 shot down (all except 1 B-24 by Oscars)
on the 28th, vs B-24, B-25 and P-51A, 1 P-51A shot down
on the 28th, vs Hurricane and Spitfire, 1 Hurricane shot down
on the night of 28-29, vs Liberator, 1 Ki-43 shot down
on the 29th, vs Hurricane and Spitfire, no fighter loss (1 Ki-48 shot down)
In routine patrols Ki-43 also shot down during the month a Mosquito, a Beaufighter and a Dakota.
Two comments after that:
_ the Oscar (here Mark II) was not the awful sucker it is in WITP.
_ planes arriving far before their historical deployment date are not limited to the Allied side. The operationnal beginnings of the Ki-44 and Ki-61 were well into 1943, not during summer 1942.
_ on the other hand, i'm not sure that P-51A are available in WIP in fall 1943, it seems to me that the first P-51 will arrive in 1944... or maybe they are here but as A-36 Apaches.

Yeah but its not just the aircraft PZB radar especially the improved CSP 1 has a huge impact on losses Japanese airframes arent bad and when flown by good pilots do ok but they cannot compete with the upgraded allied radar that extends 250 miles and give the allies huge advantages.
But I agree A2A is to bloody
In the case of this game, do units in China have this radar in November 1943 ?
By the way see the historical examples above, all Japanese raids were detected by (British) radar and 50-60 fighters scrambled and the result was one Oscar and one KI-48 lost in four raids (usually with a dozen bombers and between 6 and 20 escorts) while 2 Hurricanes were shot down in the meantime.

Hi, THe primary source for new units for non restricted HQ is China and Manchuria. I must pay PP to move such units.
Kwantung Army is currently 8700 AV (8000 required) And China has many units not present at start of game in addition to those present on Dec 7 1941. So yes I have drawn units from China but China has more units now then at start.
This is historical. The Japanese system was when a formation was required by Southern Area Army (or one of the other non restricted HQ) a veteran unit was drawn from China or Kwantung Army and replaced by a newly created unit.
However I also assign a number of formations in China and Korea/Manchuria to objectives outside those areas just to clutter/confuse enemy intell. (The 7th Ind Brigade remains in China, The 7th Mixed Brigade is now assigned to Southeast Fleet)
The most important transfers from my point of view have been the 1st and 3rd Armored Divisions transfered out of China. One to Burma Area Army and 1 to SAA. (these units are only 3/4 as strong as a full strength infantry division but they move much faster and so form the "reaction" elements for their respective areas. )
I really wanted to see how my "new" fighters did. Needless to say I Now have reduced expectations for battles in the South. I had counted on numbers making up for other weakness. It appears all numbers do is increase my loss to unacceptable levels. (I pretty much had already learned this but wanted to know for sure. )
(This is the primary reason I have not offered battle in New Guinea. I had hoped replacing the OscarII with newer types and providing larger numbers would compensate.)
Japanese pilots on a whole are trained. There are many low trained pilots but they are scattered throughtout units and only 5 full strength and 4 Chutai have overall experiance below 55. (The lowest CV based group is 61 the highest 89) I only conduct an operation of the size recently attempted in China when I have trained replacements available (and I end operations when I run out of replacements so that the units both begin and end trained and full strength. I did of course lose too many experianced pilots to be happy with the final result.

Hi, I wasn't complaing about the relocation of units from China. I've no objections against this and you're correct, its completely historical. I only wanted to show you that China is both able and willing to mount offensives if you don't keep enough strength in China.

I think it was an error not to fight for the Eastern tip of New Guinea. A combination of airpower and light surface forces (CL and DD) could have given you some good results. The sheer amount of Fletcher class destroyers that the Allies receive will make surface operations more and more dangerous for you in 1944.

Matter of factly, I've lost track of certain IJN daitais (Tainan Daitai and others). I certainly wonder if you disbanded them for training purposes or if they're held back in reserve to fight my carrier aircraft. I've yet to test my Hellcats in battle.

There are many radar devices (both SCR-270 and CPS-1) both in Chinese and USAAF base forces (China has no real supply problems in this game, thus I let the Chinese take replacements).
Kido Butai spotted at Rabaul

by Kereguelen
Nov 12th 1943
Recon and minelaying planes that targeted Rabaul met heavy A6M5 CAP over Rabaul (the airfield was hit and probably closed by a heavy B-24D raid the turn before) and search planes confirmed the presence of at least half a dozen TF's containing lots of CVs and BBs at Rabaul.
Seems that old Mogami finally came out of his hideout! I wonder what he's up to - ostensibly no sneak operation because he knows that Rabaul is reconned every turn. I expect a strike on Gili Gili or a naval bombardment in about two turns. Lots of B-25J are put on naval attack and P-38G/J on escort (the B-24D/J groups will stay at home, hitting KB with hundreds of them seems not right; maybe one group of B-24Js later if he puts hundreds of planes on CAP, but not more; kind of self-imposed houserule).
Another question is if he knows where my carriers currently are?

Presence of KB was confirmed one day later. B-25J's from Port Morseby (escorted by P-38J's) managed to penetrate the heavy CAP over the Japanes carriers and sink one CVE, damaging two more.
The following days, KB stayed close to Rabaul. Allied command decided to set bombers on Naval Attack with range 6 (250lb bombs carried by B-25J's on extended range will not do much damage, basically a waste of planes and pilots, IMHO). Range 6 should be enough to hit a battleship or cruiser force if he decides to hit Gili Gili with a bombardment TF. Game date is now Nov 20th 1943.
I'm (again) confused by Mogami's style of operations[&:].
Anyway, if he comes too close to Gili Gili, his carriers will eat some bombs!
The End of Kido Butai?

fortifications in places defended by large garrisons? Not sure about this...! <<
I've also wondered about the model for capture of cities - does the model assume that the Allies always surrender easily rather than stand and fight? What if one wants to mount a determined defense as the Allies? Large cities just do not seem to give any advantage to Allied forces on the defensive.
Dave Baranyi
It probably didn't help that Singapore's fortifications were primarily sea-facing and "Percy" was in charge.

The longest day

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/08/43
Probably the longest turn I've ever played. Combat replay took forever. Turn did not start that good, but in the end all went well for the Allies[:)] - nevertheless the appearance of his battleships and cruisers was a total surprise for me, even if they were spotted two turns before, I never expected him to strike.
The last (daylight) series of surface battles was fougth between Haruna and Hiei (who ended their movement in the same hex as my carriers) and my Surface TF that escorted my Carrier TFs.
The Allies eventually lost BB West Virginia and some destroyers, the IJN lost BBs Haruna, Hiei, Kirishima and some CA's and CL's.

Allied secondary operation to eliminate the garrison of Makin.
Not a single ship was lost, only some damaged LCI's and LST's, one damaged AK.
Allied assault odds were 226:1, garrison must have been out of supply (no wonder, they were subject to air bombardment for more than three months). Still a nice result for atoll combat. Allied forces were one Corps HQ, two divisions, one engineer regiment, one tank-destroyer battalion. Japanese forces were just two NLF's, two base forces, one construction battalion and one coastal gun regiment.
Could have taken Makin months earlier but hoped that Mogami would attempt to reinforce or evacuate the garrison.

Mog still uses the A6M2 Zero in 1944. Seems that he appreciates their long range. His raid came as a surprise, but my Corsairs did their job.
Allied subs are taking a steady toll, but I started my big sub offensive too late (I was simply too lazy earlier). Subs won't be the war winner in this game.
The big news is that we spotted a Japanese TF in the triangle between Wake-Makin-Johnston. Maybe some raiders hoping to disrupt my supply lanes for the CENTPAC offensive? Luckyly I've some carriers on hand and should be able to find out.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/26/44
Okay, found out about Mog's TF. Actually a bunch of TF's. Did not really expect action this turn, but then all my Carrier TF's reacted to enemy carriers - even the CVE TF's that only went along to guard my Replenishment TF. All Carrier TF's ended in the same hex after the reaction move. Thus US Forces included 7 CV's, 9 CVL's and 11 CVE's in six Air Combat TF's. They met 9 Japanese CV's (if I did count correctly, only six CV's were hit but it seems that there were more Japanese planes present) and at least one CVE (ostensibly guarding his Replenishment TF). Result was a complete slaughter, about 600 Japanese planes were shot down, US losses were less than 100. There was virtually no Japanese CAP in the afternoon phase. He'll probably loose 5-6 CV's, the BB Kongo and the CVE. Not a single Allied ship was hit (all US fighters were on CAP/Escort 50% providing a CAP of 214 F6F Hellcats, 52 FM-2 Wildcat and 12 F4U-1D). Next turn we'll try to pursue!
Elsewhere, Gasmata was captured by the 30th Australian Brigade and one more unit at Makin surrendered.
