I would not change the AVG into squadrons. The Zero effectiveness rule doesn't impact them.

A good many people on this board feel it shouldn't, after all it is very doubtful the AVG actually fought any Zeros.

My concern was that the AVG exception may have been hardcoded to the specific slot and if the group was broken up into 3 then only one would retain the exception if an entire different sqd. could get it if it was assigned to a non-AVG group.

I agree that the AVG probably never saw a Zero , but I look at the manuever bonus reflecting that you do not try to dogfight with the Zero. Prewar training doctrine would have the allies try to dogfight and would lose. Until that was accepted by all, the bonus reflects that. The AVG was taught never to dogfight with the Japanese a/c. That is why they are exempt.

You could easily make the case that the bonus should apply to all Japanese fighters in the beginning, but I see the difference is the firepower of the Zero. The other Japanese a/c are armed with only 2x30 or maybe 1x30 and 1x50. This amount of firepower is not as devastating as the 20mm on the Zero. The allies could dogfight (mistakenly) and still survive the contact as there a/c was more robust and armored (for the most part). However, when hit with the 20's, that did serious damage and they would be shot down. As time progressed, the allies learned that and the bonus diminshed.

I like the others so far prefer 2 and then 3.

Are the Tac-Recon squadrons the ones named that were part of the bomber groups. If they are, many were renamed to bomber squadron in 42 and dropped the recon squadron label.

No Sir - you are thinking of the Heavy Reconnaissance Squadrons of the Bombardment Groups. Tactical Recon Squadrons were army support units. Most of them had light aircraft and only the 110th had F-5 photo aircraft (and it is the only one that is in the game).

I think I might be wise to ensure that the original slot of the AVG (1071) is left empty.

Originally I was going to say that I prefer option 3, as I would not like to lose the 'Squadron' (or whatever) identifier at the end, but I can see the attraction of option 2. I agree that the other options are mush less desirable.

I believe this is the winner:

Name Options #2 (Squadron Assumed)
nnnth Fighter
nnnth Night Fighter
nth Commando Fighter
nnnth Bombardment
nnth Photo-Recon
nnnth Tactical Recon
nnth Combat Cargo
nnnth Troop Carrier

Last chance for comments, 'cause once I do all this work it shore ain't gonna get re-done.

The W Flight RAF #1193 Don told me was legit as a British group that is made up of Wirraways. Should the upgrade be the standard to a Boomerang or should it have a special upgrade to a British plane?

Historically it was wiped out and, being a temporary unit, not reformed. I'm open to suggestions...

I don't remember if air units come back if killed or captured. If they don't come back, make sure it gets captured at Singapore, though you can't program it to disappear.

Assuming it escapes, since it is a British unit, I would have the upgrade to a Brit plane.

May I suggest that the replacement rates of most of the Dutch planes are set to 0 : FK-51, T.IVa, Do24K-2, C XIV were no more built (at least in Allied countries for the Do24). For other I am not sure (Martin 139, Hawk, CW-22, CW-21 and so on) but I doubt US factories were still building there, they were probably building newer aircraft.

Maybe they should start with a replacement pool, but I don't think the Dutch had so many planes in reserve. This way we will see the Dutch air force disappear in the DEI as it did historically and not having it destroyed and reformed two months later.

Same thing for the Chinese air force. AFAIK it received no more Soviet planes after 1941. So rate for SB-2c, I-16c and Il-4c should be nil. Chinese AF was hiding in rear bases until being reequiped with American planes (starting with the P-43 then P-40 and also B-25). And AVG was needed in China.

I set the majority of the non built aircraft replacement rates to one .

Why one? because i wanted to represent canibalizing dead aircraft to fix mostly dead aircraft. Plus, one doesn't mean much.
