Crap! Had a nice pic of the surface action but the clipboard had a combat report on it for some reason...must have been me copying the report to post in forum and it overwrote the pic. Have to post pic first! Aha.

This turn was bloody...started out with a surface battle SW of Malang. RN can claim a victory there by sinking four escorts and damaging a few ships.

The day started out bad as Mogami moved his CVs even closer to Java, drawing still more of my bombers despite having reined in their range. Was interested to see what came next as Mogami said I was going to like this turn. Unfortunately a whack of my bombers got chewed up over the IJN CVs and began to think that Russ was being facetious...unfortunately for Russ, he wasn't.

During the rest of the day the Java based aircraft rained death on the Amphib TF and the 2nd Division attempting to unload at Malang . It was brutal as Mogami forgot to check his CAP assignments carefully and thought CAP was slated for Malang. Something went wrong and the Glorious Battle of Malang looked like a slaughter house. More damage done here than Japan did at Pearl Harbor. I don't think these losses will roll off the ducks back.

I had 2 transport TF 42 and 51. The CAP (46xA6M2) was assigned to TF 42 and the surface TF was "following" TF 42 (The lead TF) When TF 51 caught up and was in the same hex I said "what the heck" and combined the 2 TF. But I moved 42 into 51 and not 51 into 42. The new TF 42 was transports loading in Osaka so the surface TF took off at high speed to reach it. And the CAP was also missing.

It is not like this is the first time I've done this. I do it all the time.

That is just brutal! I thought for sure I would have intercepted the convoy the night before but you stopped so the TFs could merge. My SC TF was hanging it out and were it not for some timely Thunderstorms it would have been raining bombs, not precip. Fortunes of war I suppose.

Still...not a very forgiving interface is it?

Hi, I have pondered this many times and my conclusion is the interface is more forgiving then actual history. I always know exactly what went wrong and who to blame. There are no accidents like in actual war.

For the second night in a row the Royal Navy engages a massive Invasion Convoy intent on investing Malang and disrupts the landing. While Mogami had some bad luck yesterday, it changed today as he was spared another air onslaught due to me setting the attack plane range to zero so they would not be drawn by his bait force of BBs sitting one hex away at Soerabaja. If this was 1.5, I think that the IJA 2nd Division would have been destroyed by now but, as at Guadalcanal, he is going to attempt to beach his ships on the coast of Java.

Intense ops schedule and enemy fighters have drastically reduced the operational levels of the two bomber groups at Darwin. Looks like the repair model might be nearer the truth than first thought. Wish I could say the same about the seemingly emasculated B-17 vs Jap fighters...pretty rare for all those massed .50cals to knock a fighter down. Almost seems that the fighters are tougher than the forts.

Yep, some, there is a Solomons map here someplace.

Another element of the RN cruiser force operating in the Malang area attempted to emmulate the counterparts success but met with grief and tragedy. A Japanese bombardment force happened to enter Malang the same evening and the exchange never in doubt. Attempting to escape damaged after the first encounter, Electra was run down by the Hiei and consorts and sunk. See below...

The threatening invasion convoy is burning and disgorging troops in the same hex as the airbase but the AI sends the airstrike vs a bait TF set to patrol surabaya hex to draw the aircraft as the BBs have been hardcoded a higher priority. Why can't we set naval target priorities? We can set up more specific things like CAP percentage and non naval targets, WHY NOT GIVE PLAYER SOME WAY TO INFLUENCE THE AI? I'm bitching because it would be more inline with operational level control than the majority of the options the player now has.

Because, if my Surface force had not run into your BB group, it would have disrupted the landing for a third turn and the transports would have been one hex away as last turn. How did you think you got away without air attack on day 2? They were set to zero.

Having to frig with ranges every turn is just silly and and clumsy and is a result of the design harking back to hard coded selection values for targets. Seeing as this was supposed to be an operational level game, one would think they would have allowed player more operational level control (set priority for targets, etc so that the AI would micromanage the details) and reduced the amount of micromanagement fiddling (juggling range, alttitude, mission) we have to do.

So, after resetting ranges for aircraft in order to impart some control and keep the AI from squandering my remaining aircraft on Java, the action continues. Basically the remnants of Mogami's Transport TF is retiring under heavy air attack, having left the 2nd Div to fend for itself on Malang. Only a matter of time before the Japanese division is completely destroyed on the beach.

I am of the opinion that this force was originally destined for the Batavia/Merak end of Java but the Malanf debacle and the air attack may have caused Mogami to alter or delay his bid for Java. Otherwise, why not send units overland from safe harbor of Balikpapan?

Briefly I was convinced that Mogami had had enough and was going to postpone any further invasion attempts of Java until he had gained air superiority and destroyed the Allied air power in the Java area but I was wrong. Batavia was visited today by a second amphibious force, possibly late arriving for what was originally supposed to be a simultaneous two pronged attack.
