Let me guess. According to the date stamps on the forum messages, the clocks sprung forward this morning and . . . I forgot to change them again?

Spent many a week at Midway hunting subs. Its no garden spot. Its nice and warm with plenty of sand, 20 minute walk from side to side. The big down side are the damn Gooney Birds. They are the noisest birds I have ever heard. They click their beaks non-stop 24/7 and the island is literally covered in them. Every 4-5 feet is a gooney bird. You can walk right up to them and they won't move. You can't touch them because they are "protected." Used to have to send the duty truck down the runway to pick up the birds and move them off the runway so we could take off and land. On one takeoff, we sucked a gooney bird down #3 engine which immediately flamed out at 200'. We wallowed in the air for a long time until we dumped enough fuel to climb. After we landed, I had to go dump my shorts.

During that same action (which I have a screenshot of somewhere above--the "rowboat" scene) I saw two different graphics of Japanese ships, first one, then it snapped over to the other. Strange.

Are you sure you have the right download? I checked the database and the scenario on Spooky's has the Martlet with 321mph speed and 6 .50cals.

That seems right to me. Do you have a different version?

That issue with the sub could be the replay bug. However, my understanding of that bug is that the Jap player WILL see the correct reply so if neither of you saw it.....who knows?

The second turn was OK to me, despite TJ saying he saw some strange things. Only problem was the Tojo file did not replace the old one...still have the white blob fighter, and a mistake I made in completely forgetting to issue order to Menado units. I always miss something early on![:D]

Another annoying thing is my first love...bashing naval combat. In the 4 engagements between MY ATTACKING PTs and the Japanese Amphibious TF at San Marcelino, in all cases the Allied force was surprised. I can see it for the initials, but how do PT Boats get surprised by the same TF twice? Surprise is sufferred, not enjoyed, by the attacker too often it seems in my opinion.

I KNOW I gave you guys the right file. Did you replace the old file? Dumb question, I know but check your ART folder for two copies of the Jtop and Jtop_alpha. If you have two the game will reference whichever was there first. I just checked the zip file and the red Tojo is in there.

The problem is, Steve, there never was "the Martlet." There was a confused (the numbering wasn't even consecutive, so the Mark III came before the Mark II so to speak) bunch of them. And then, to make it harder to understand still, the FAA finally changed the nomenclature to "Wildcat IV" and such.

The picture above is of a fixed-wing G-36B (French variant), or a British Martlet Mark I. The FAA received 81 of these (ten were lost at sea during delivery, but these were made good by the ten full spares the French had also ordered).

Let's assume the date on the picture above is wrong, just for the sake of explaining how screwy this gets. Then that plane might also be a fixed-wing G-36A, which was the English variant. (Actually it couldn't be because that one looked a bit different. [:)]) They received ten of these. Then, when the new folding-wing model of the F4F-3 became available (F4F-3B) these first ten were designated Mark IIIs, with the new folding-wing G-36As (90 of those) becoming Mark IIs.

The British also took delivery on 30 F4F-3As originally earmarked for Greece. No doubt Don's on top of all this minutiae. Mike (Lemurs!) said they'd gone over aircraft re the OOB for some time, especially the squirrely Wildcat issues.

Anyway, the model shown above is the export version of the Grumman F4F-3A. That's not what I was discussing before higher up in the thread. The problem in the game with Mike's scenario 15 is that he lists no Martlets at all, only a "Wildcat IV/VI." Trouble with that is those two Wildcat marks were two entirely different beasts, plus that doesn't encompass the earlier mark Martlets, including the Mark IV (with the Wright R-1820-40B Cyclone engine), which corresponded to the F4F-4. And that was the Wildcat model with six .50s. And it stayed that way unitl General Motors got into the act and turned some of its east coast production facilities into what became known as the Eastern Aircraft Division, which went on to produce the successful FM-1 and FM-2 versions of the extended "Wildcat" (this took a load off Grumman, which had limited production space and was about to get into the Hellcat line), and the British took delivery on those later models as well (Martlet V and Wildcat VI, respectively).

I've subsequently checked the OOB for the Allies in the CHS test scenario (didn't want to peek earlier, spoling my fun and all) and in there Mike only has a vanilla "Martlet," which I've tried to explain is fantasy. There never was the Martlet. There were a number of different "Martlets," and they all pretty much performed uniquely. I don't know how many slots are available for planes, but if some of those are being taken up by exotic Japanese stuff then I'd urge someone to pay closer attention to the Wildcat series, especially the British variants, because these were produced in round numbers and were a significant factor in the war.
