What was the final outcome by the way?

This game was a stock campaign.

We called it a draw and moved on to CHS, and never looked back to stock again.[;)]
Better map, better OOB, better everything.

BTW, Ceylon was bombed into oblivion in later months by the Allies, and never became a useful base of operations for the Japanese.[;)]

Totally agree, CHS is far superior to stock.

The Ceylon invasion served its purpose, which was to destroy allied materiel, to gain total control of the Bay of Bengal for some months, and to constrain the Allies in Burma. All in all it was worthwhile I think.

It is hard to watch your ships getting creamed. Feel for ya. Been there done that. Oh yea ....................Bump! (Great turn though)

Oof. I did a double-take at this one. These are words you don't often see in the same paragraph of an AAR: "Surface Combat" and "CV."

As soon as it came up on the screen, I hit "esc". Couldn't watch it. Come to think of it, I hit "escape" several times that turn.

Irrelevent, I know this was an old thread, but did the loss of surface combatants hurt other abilities (such as ASW). Thanks.

Of course it did, IJN has a shortage of escorts to begin with. IIRC I lost ~18 DDs sunk in that op, plus others with severe damage.

We dropped the game before US subs really became a factor. But it seriously constrained my subsequent ops because of my organization doctrine.

I like to have no more than 2 CVs in a TF. CVTFs move together following SCTFs, which in turn most of the time follow replenishment TFs. Following the whole shebang are ASW TFs. If there are transports they are in nearby hexes w/ ASW TFs following them too. With luck everything stays together, mostly. But this requires a ton of escorts.

My next op, invasion of northern Oz, was a disaster. But I think this was a combination of too late (July 42) and too obvious. If I had gone for Luganville and Noumea instead I may have had better luck. But in any case, IJ invasions after 3/31 are iffy due to the expiration of the amphibious bonus. Don't underestimate the effect this has.
