Me a few years ago whilst playing SWOTL?[;)]
I got 16 in the Wildcat v Kate mission in Battlehawk 1942 (I think that was the name - it was the precursor to BOB, which was the precursor to SWOTL) You had a big line of Dive Bombers to kill before they dropped their eggs on a carrier, if you got them all you got the CMOH...
That was my first ever computer game, and the reason I bought an Amiga...

Harley,
For some reason what you said reminded me of 'Fighter Command'. You remember it? I remember in that you could 'fight in game' and shoot down planes IIRC you could shoot down crazy numbers of planes and influence the whole campaign acordingly!

wasn't that 1942 ? you could tell the fleets were to go and what to do, and then when the raids were flying you could jump in and fly the missions ??

I got 11 in a 239, but the game didn't give them all to me, first pass, I flamed 2 Chukas (think I killed one pilot) as I flew past, both pulled up and flew into each other, which the game said they crashed, instead of me shooting the down
but I got 8 Chukas and 3 Rats
I do have records of a 11 kill mission while flying a 262, when your in the zone, the 262 can be great, HARDest part is not pulling the trigger, close in and tap and away you go, work it right and you fire 4 to 8 rounds, 1 to 2 hits will kill any fighter, 3 or 4 and you should drop any bomber
I don't fly with the cockpit on, but other then that, I am close to full real (SA in IL-2 is lousy, so will not fly with the cockpit)

Hi bud,
No. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called now. Really old game. On the C64. Map of England each German Raid would be shown as a Swastika. Each RAF flight the RAF symbol. When combat started (you could only play the British) you would 'jump' into the cockpit. Waves of aircraft would be straight ahead of you. You could steer really you just had to shoot.
Very poor part of the game and poor graphics....
What was this bl**dy game called?!?[8|]

the first mission shown shows 9 kills, this guy had a couple of days with 9
when he shot down 11, he landed and still had ammo left, ran out of targets
I thought I had a F4u pilot that shot down either 11 or 12 Betties, but it was in a static campaign demo, so the results are kept in a different way

Well, OK then, was I correct with the answer?
The prize is to set a question!

Maybe we ought to have a new rule: anyone who has already got a question should wait 48 hrs before answering (to stop me, HS, Harley, Dude etc just playing ping pong!). Come one you lurkers, we promise not to bite [;)]
Question:
Why was the Zero called that. What else was it called, and why/who by? I can think of 3 main variants (real differences, not just different sub type names).

Zero was named for the year it was made in, the JP calader not being the same as the western one
if I follow the rest of the question
the Allied code name was Zeke, but pilots being what pilots are, still used the name Zero when ever they seen it
they were also code named Hamp, which when first seen in action, they thought it was a new plane, but later on found out it was a sub set of the Zero
which also, it shouldn't really be called the Zero, it was the Zero-Sen
plus it was known to the JP as the Reisen

fwiw - the calendar year was reset to 0 on the ascension of Emperor Hirihito.

Correct - strictly the last 2 numbers of the year of adoption in to service as measured from the founding of the Japanese Empire in 660 BC - hence Type 96 bomber, type zero fighter etc. The Type Zero was adopted by IJN in 1940, i.e. 2600, or Zero
if I follow the rest of the question

Correct - thats 1 extra
they were also code named Hamp, which when first seen in action, they thought it was a new plane, but later on found out it was a sub set of the Zero
hadn't thought of that, since it was a mis-identification - have an extra 1/2 mark. Still 2 to go (not necessarily all allied names)
which also, it shouldn't really be called the Zero, it was the Zero-Sen
OK, but effectively same as zero
plus it was known to the JP as the Reisen
Actually, it is (appologies to any Japanese speakers for any errors in my reference) Rei shiki Kanjo sentoki (which is Type Zero Carrier Fighter), and Reisen is a contraction of this - i.e. still variants of 'Zero'.
Still 2 completely different forms off address to go![;)]

You are mixing your drinks[8D]
There were 2 ways of numbering years in Japan (now 3 I guess, because they now use western years as well).Japanese specs tended to be referred to by the Emperor's calendar. Hirohito was the Showa Emperor, and ascended the throne in 1926. Years were counted for the Showa Emperor, starting from Showa 1 in 1926. The Zero spec was issued in 1937 (12 Showa), and was referred to as the 12-Shi fighter until it entered service, and acquired the Type number corresponding to year 2600. Quite why they did it I don't know. Anyone?

You're all forgetting the obvious one...
The last one is really onscure, and I only stumbled on it by accident. I will be impressed if anyone gets it...
