It's too bad English doesn't have an cool letters. Like that double s thing, that looks like a "B" or that o with a slash thru it, or umlauts (or whatever you call them).

I have alphabet envy.

Up until the '50s, we routinely used umlauts for some spelling - i can remember reading "cooperation" spelled with an umlaut over the second "o"... but i'm not sure that's what they called it ...

Yeah we have something like 8 more letters. Check these out.

í Í is like in beer
ú Ú is like in food
õ Õ is like in sir
û Û its like a german ü but long
ó Ó well not hard door
é É is like wait
á Á is like sign.

In hungarian you write everything like it is originally pronounced (in case of languages with no latin letters). Iszoroku Jamamoto, Müszasi, Hirjü, Dzüikakü (Zuikaku), gésa ([;)]). It sounds similar to japanese. No wonder they say we are their only relatives in Europe. No joke.

Other examples : Teng Hsziao Ping in english Deng Xiao Ping, or Gorbacsov vs Gorbachev. Some languages like mongol or turkish have similar vowels (?) like ü so Szübötej is Subotai in english.

But we dont have consonants th(at), and th(ing) and w(ave). Most of us promounce them like det, sing, and vait.

Imagine how hard it is to write a hungarian letter on a laptop with no extra keys!

Oh, good question :)

What method is standarized in your countries to get your national special letters?

In Poland, we use standard English keyboards, and we have acces to special letters by left alt (right is functionig normally, left is for Polish signs) and pressing at the same time letter.
(big letters by pressing also shift)
alt+a ą Ą (nasal a - like om in French Compiegne)
alt+c ć Ć (much softer Eng. tsch)
alt+e ę Ę (nasal e)
alt+l ł Ł (like English w in wood, note that Polish w is read as Eng. v)
alt+n ń Ń (much softer n)
alt+o ó Ó (like Eng. oo in wood)
alt+ś ś Ś (much softer sch)
alt+z ż Ż (Eng. zh)
alt+x ź Ź (much softer Eng. zh)
