How about some screenshots? Short little battle report? perhaps a well deserved smack of Iran?
As for looks, looks pretty much like your father's Harpoon Classic

with a bit of freshening up and a WestPac battleset (with more fun to come after release).
Brad (CV32) recently took on Iran as Korea, read AAR at
http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=1773
So did Ralf for that matter
http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=1770
Herman actually does screenshots with AARs, some land units in this one,

Anyway, lots of AARs at HarpGamer, once you've covered Page 1, jump to about Page 13 for more

According to the Coming Soon section on Matrix Games site the HCCE is discontinued. What happened???

Hehe, maybe they just couldn't handle getting the game manual updated. I expect it is just a mistake that it is listed as discontinued, hopefully someone from Matrix will chime in and verify.

Hi Erik
Have no fear the game is NOT discontinued and should be available soon. We are updating out web software that shows our games will also show discontinued ones as well. It would look as if its also showing unrelease ones also. I get the web guys on track to correct it.

Okay, if nobody else is going to speak up [:(] I'll open my trap again. No more information, game is done, just waiting on the user manual compilation from Matrix. With Origins looming that means forget the next week or two.
Will try to post up a screenshot or two or something tomorrow.

What is the difference between this version of Harpoon and the one that is currently available through Matrix?

What is the difference between this version of Harpoon and the one that is currently available through Matrix?
Matrix is a new start of sorts for Harpoon and vague answers to your question Rob may be frustrating but one of the few things the various factions of Harpoon have generally agreed upon is no trashing either of the games in a comparison in public forums. HC (Harpoon Classic/HCE) folks are plenty capable of trashing H3 (Harpoon 3/ANW) and vice versa. It has been done, it has ruined gaming relationships, and has made everyone look bad. Oh, and did I mention AGSI doesn't much appreciate it either!
AGSI positions H3 as more hard core and HC as a lighter game, imho that is mainly marketing and product positioning and has little to do with the games themselves. A stock answer is that each game has its place, they each do certain things better, H3 excels at small engagements, HC will deal with larger engagements better (broad generalization...). The list goes on and on as you can well imagine.
As for the approach to making the games, H3 is the star child with paid staff (with a ton of volunteer help, testing, etc.), professional coders (Darrel Dearing for instance who you will find in the credits of almost every Harpoon computer game). H3 has the direct feed from the paper rules guys. So H3 has the clout, the future, and the need to fund development.
HC since 2003 was meant to be an end of life product, finish up the additon of the WestPac battleset (which has been around since 2003 but never in a non-beta release of the game), release the game and a bug patch or two and put it out to pasture in the history of naval simulations. Thanks in part to Matrix showing some interest to Bond, Carlson, Gilman for continued development of HC after the HCE release, and in part to a few of us regularly sending Don Gilman (AGSI) proposals to keep working at the game, HC development will continue after the HCE release. We're working for free or for a bit of royalties, time will tell, but nothing monetarily worth the investment of time and effort.
Anyway, the way forward once HCE releases is I'll get access to the source code again and will transition to being the primary programmer (how long that takes depends upon how active Fletcher wants to remain in coding), CV32 (author of HCDB) will handle support along with a fellow who goes by the username Akula (he has done a lot of the platform photo work with us and writes some nasty good scenarios too). H3 -> TNH (The Next Harpoon) is and will be AGSI's focus.
HC should pretty much be left to the three of us as a steering comittee of sorts. We'll have almost zero resources next to H3 but we'll also have a measure of agility and lightness H3 does not. The three of us are in it for the game, not the almighty dollar. My approach will be an open one, there are bugs, there will be bugs, but the bugs will not be brushed under the rug. That also doesn't mean every bug and every unexpected behavior will be modified, but you will be welcome to speak your mind and interact directly with those of us who have more control over what does and doesn't happen in terms of changes, additions, etc. to the game.
Yes, I'm excited for HCE, I'm extremely excited for the changes and enhancements to the game that will occur after release and hope that we are allowed to continue development for many more years! TNH had better be great but we're out to do everything we can (outside of real life and work [:(]) for HC until that ideal Harpoon computer game materializes.

This isn't much news on progress but Matrix asked for some screenshots to use on the website and for other marketing (and I sent some over), I'd take that as a sign that we are moving closer to release, how much closer I have no idea, but closer nonetheless.

Tony,
Thank you for that excellent explanation and information. As an old fan of the original, I am really excited at the direction you are taking the game. Can’t wait !!!

Hey All
It started like this.....
Playing civilisation, uh huh, you know it.... recently acquired version and amazingly similar to the way old version.
Well as the game progressed it started me thinking about some of the other games from the ole days (amiga and 486 DX66, oh yeah, that far back!) that I would spend hours on, before the PC became a tool of work and fascist imperialism [:@]! *hehehe*
Whatever happened to Harpoon? I dont see it in the shops when wander past, did that hard core new version end up taking over from classic harpoon, or did it end up spelling the end to both?
So I googled, ended up here, and lo the old version does still exist and is being released again and the world was good...... *sniff* ..... and look it's all bundled in one package...... I think Im *sniffle* going to cry..... a community and everthing *whaaaa*
Its a bloody miracle of timing is what.... I dont believe it [X(] Due to be released within days and a lil community of devotees, yes Virginia ..... lol
cheers
Bungle
looking for my ghq miniatues O.H. Perry's and Udaloy's etc ..........

Still waiting on a draft of the manual, but the days until release are decreasing, judging by my giddiness the later days are difficult to wait through!
Pete has some nice pictures of his miniatures, but seeing them requires an account on the HarpGamer forum.
http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=1083 1/6000 scale
http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=1121 1/2400 scale
But to read about many of his paper wargame exploits you don't need an account

(I'm doing what I can to keep everyone distracted until release [8D] )

hey
I can understand your impash... imperti....... not hardly being able to wait.
Having just discovered that the game still exists after not sighting it for near on a decade I think waiting a few more days, weeks, months (sorry hehehe) wont do me any harm!
I thought I had my old copy of Harpoon (classic I think it was called -mid 90's), no show must have given it away or borrowed it out. However way back in the dark nether regions of "Pandora's Wardrobe" is Harpoon II (soley responsible for my going out and purchasing classic [:)]) by three sixty........ ? Hehehe 'requires 386 or better, DOS 5 or later.... blah blah ...... oooer ......MS windows not required! Sounds too good to be true.
I didnt mind the new look of Harp II but I couldnt resist the old interfance and game play.
Thanks for the links will check out the miniatures pics.
Back to trawling through the forums and links.
cheers
