A great crossing into Shimonoseki by numerically inferior forces, clearly enabled by devastating air strikes. Reduced the fortifications by 2 levels! Our troops are in great shape as far as few casualties taken but definitely need to recover disruption before attacking again. They have easily retained more than 1/3 enemy AV so follow on units can cross the river at full speed without shock attacking.

One Australian division plus the supporting units are heading for Hirosaki/Aomori. The other Australian division will follow when more recovered. The convoys with the remaining two divisions are loading supplies at Sapporo.

Some armoured units have arrived in Maizuru. Assigned units are setting out from Tsu to take up blocking positions at Wakayama (for when Osaka/Kyoto is invested) and Osaka/Kyoto. My revised plan is to drive the Imperials at Maizuru to the open terrain of Tottori (to the west), and likewise Imperials at Osaka/Kyoto and at Kode (which will be invested by US forces).

Curiosity makes me ask; (1) "where" are all the bombers generally based ? (2) what sort of HQ and Air support do you have supporting those numbers ?

Reading the combat report: Morning Air attack XXXX at 104,57 (Shimonoseki)...

You variously threw around 80 + Superfortress' Same number of Mitchell's, and same number of Liberators give or take.

I would guess a bunch are based in Level 9 bases in Home Islands East, but additionally potentially Okinawa ? Amani Oshima ?

And to deploy so many you must have (forward) : XX Bomber Command ...7th Bomber Command ...5th Bomber Command, V Bomber Command, II Fighter Command... perhaps SoPac Air Forward, PCO Air Forward ??

I am not really asking for a "bases by base OOB drilldown" but perhaps you and enlighten the rookies with "high level".

I am relatively inexperienced in this. In my own first game completion I struggled to "plan ahead" and get the correct amount of Air Support (HQ and USAAF Engineers) into Sapporo for example.

OK. Probably a lot more than 80x B-29 flew in total. All operational B-29 squadrons are currently at Sapporo. All operational USA B-24 (and the handful of B-17 remaining) are at the base just SW, name temporarily escapes me through a leak which caffeine will shortly plug (Murano??). There are adequate air HQ on Hokkaido to cover them, maybe at those same bases but I don't recall. All air bases there maxed out (I've held Hokkaido for plenty of time). Lots of fighters and some smaller bombers now at Hakodate (closest to Honshu). If there were more of an air or sea threat from the Empire then certainly I would have the big bombers split up more. There is plenty of CAP and night CAP around, including a couple of dedicated 0-range CAP at the B-29 base. Air support is 'extra' by plenty but is being shaved to bring some base forces on those northern Hokkaido bases just seized. Of course the 4EB will not need to relocate.

This is my biggest learning I think from limited 1 game experience. Paid insufficient attention to moving Air HQs (and others) forward to i.e. to Hokkaido when you were secure.

I try for adequate air HQ coverage. I went with lots of extra air support mostly because I could at the time and having extra does help cycle planes (up to a point). By 'shave' I mean that I am reducing the extra air support to send those base forces to other, newly acquired bases. Yes, those bases are for fighters and 1 and 2 engine bombers.

Concentration of the 4EB helps with coordination, but of course I would reduce that concentration to protect them if there were threats to their bases.

Tottori was unexpectedly left open and looters are roaming the city. An Australian Sherman equipped armoured unit will race in and quiet things down. Several US divisions are heading from Okayama to Kobe to stop any retreat there from Osaka/Kyoto.

The RN and French fast battleships have put into Nagasaki/Sasebo for repairs.

The Imperial abandonment of Tottori means there will be no pushing the enemy into that open terrain. We will have a division and armoured regiment in Osaka/Kyoto tomorrow to prevent retreat there from Maizuru, and units will shortly arrive in Wakayama to prevent retreat there from Osaka/Kyoto. First attack at Maizuru tomorrow, and - way north - first attack at Ominato.

There were a number of minor naval skirmishes both night and day, and several night air strikes without hits on ships. The B-29 horde made Manpower strikes on Nagoya and boosted Fires (which were begun by the RN battleships) to about 320,000 by the end of the day. B-29 and B-27 together will strikes Manpower at Yokohama/Yokosuka tomorrow.

The docks at Tsu are still beehives of activity.

One division arrived during the day. We are greatly over stacked at Maizuru and some divisions have sky high disruption. Tottori, just west, can serve as a recovery station. But still greater resistance than anticipated. Probably a couple of days recovery needed. The two divisions are unloading now at Akita and will move on Hirosak/Aomori. 4th Marine Division is heading south to Yamagata.

Resistance in the air over Yokohama/Yokosuka was heavier than expected and combined with heavy flak to take a toll on our fliers, mostly P-51D escorts. Sweeps will be increased tomorrow. Fires peaked at ~167,000. Fires >16,000 still burning at Nagoya.

One small unit with 1,700 troops remains as rear guard and will be vanquished tomorrow.

Home Islands east.
Three divisions, a motorised division, and two armoured units are moving out of Maizuru into Tottori to speed recuoeration and reduce crowding. It looks as though Wakayama is being abandoned, and while we have a division and a regiment already moving there but hte roads are bad; it might be a few days before they arrive.

Tomorrow at Ominato all units except two divisions will attack. 3rd Marine Division is heading out from Hachinohe to Sendai (3 hexes). 4th Marine Division should arrive at Yamagata (just NW Sendai) in two days. The Empire appears to be shifting troops from Sendai (Clear terrain) to Yamagata (Woods-Rough terrain).

The bombers did not fly against Yokohama/Yokosuka today, so Fires there are down to ~18,000. Tomorrow the B-24 groups are ordered to strike the port while the B-29 groups strike the airfield complex.
