My guess:
Saratoga is still in fighting conditions, with the best chances of escaping if he run it full speed

Also, looking at your map, Dutch Harbor is not a valid destination, if you have LBAs at Umnak, he will have to go south to PH

You have about 250 a/c capacity give or take with HIYO, JUNYO, ZUIHO, RYUHO, HOSHO, and the 3 CVEs, and the other damage isn't bad....RYUJO is toast, and SHOHO looks 50/50, but everyone else should be fine. Get them back to Japan and start repairs.

I agree that you almost certainly sank both LEX and HORNET, and that from the damage report only SARATOGA looks like she might be operational. At this point he is probably weighing whether to try to protect the cripples, or cut losses and run. He's not thinking offense, I guarantee!

I really think you need to follow-up and try to finish this...you have every advantage. Fly more planes out to fill your CVs if you need to, but you should have plenty of aircraft to follow-up

You have carrier superiority for over six months. Then the enemy will start to get CVLs then the Essex classes. The Allies will get CVEs in the meantime.

The enemy should not be able to push in the Central Pacific for awhile, only where the Allies can get LBA air superiority. To surprise the enemy and to protect a base where the Allies do not have Naval air strikes, you could load up your CVEs with fighters and send them to that base. They will not have any penalty there. Of course, you can expect Naval Air strikes the next turn . . .

I would say make as many small DD TFs set to charge the enemy to find cripples, launch torpedoes, and retreat. Have larger SCTF follow them up with your Carriers punishing any enemy ships that they can.

Don't forget night search, although they may not fly the turn after you set them if they were on day operations.

Get subs between his TFs and bases that they can run to.

Thanks Q-ball, i was thinking that they might be a little low on fuel and armnaments too. They have been up there a while. I guess i got really lucky they didn't hit me with torpedoes.

Hi joe, i like the idea of a bunch of DDs running around looking for stragglers. My DDs and their Torps have always done well for me.
Good idea about the subs too. I've got a bunch of them positioned near Baker I that missed the invasion force there. I point them between Adak and Pearl Harbor.

I never ran subs at full speed. Check to see if you need to run them at full speed. The subs should be able to move faster than crippled ships. But if you could get the Saratoga with torpedoes . . .

Remember that the Japanese move first!

My the ops losses I would wager 3 American carrier sunk and you have 8 carriers in fighting trim, though those on the lower end when it comes to aircraft capacity. The CVEs may be near the limit on ops so I would stations fighters on those and ASW aircraft and strike aircraft on the CVs and CVL still operational as they have a larger amount of sorties available.

I get overwhelmed pretty easy on these mega turns so this took me a couple of days. Here's the results of the day after the Carrier Battle of the Aleutian Islands

For those carriers, did you get any critical hits? Fuel and ammo explosions would be listed and those, with the other damage, would be hard for his ships to handle so far from a friendly base. Three carriers definitely sunk with two others heavily damaged. [&o]

Also important, a fast BB and a CLAA sinking is good because they make nice escorts for his future carriers. It looks like only one carrier was able to fly aircraft. [&o]

Don't forget to have port bombings selected for the closest enemy bases or even don't select a target and let the computer choose. Hit any cripples in port. Vector in your subs and maybe even lay minefields if you can should any cripples try to leave port. Or if you can lay them before the ships can get into port and disband.

I knew Yorktown and Saratoga were operational (at least before last battle). he should had sent them at full speed on direction south, to PH... he might had saved one or maybe both carriers

I was not surprised to see Enterprise and Wasp afloat, but sinking quickly this turn as they were in poor shape

I was surprised to see Hornet surviving the night, as it got 4 torpedoes; but then it was an easy target this last turn

you should be careful now with your carriers; maybe keep them at long range from where Yorktown and Saratoga are, so that they strike if they survive, but not close enough as to risk another surface combat

in any case, he is done now, he will to wait until early 1944 for any sort of carrier parity, which means you will have plenty of time to consolidate. Don't lose your carriers, be careful with submarines and keep them on well patrolled waters

Be aggressively passive. That is, be aggressive when you can get LBA protection but flood the area with Naval Search (day and night) and ASW search prior to entry. If he attacks anyplace, be ready to punish him. He has toys and he wants to play with them. Remember, for CAP for one turn, you can surprise him with CVEs at a base but do not do that for more than one turn because he will probably try to attack with everything that he can. So then set up a CAP trap maybe even with the KB nearby to assist - but out of range of his best attacking aircraft. If you are allowed night bombing of his airfields, the long range Nells would be good for that the night turn before the CAP trap to fatigue his air crews. So make sure that they are flying at night before that. Maybe they would be the ones on night search.

On the Saratoga and the Yorktown, were there any fuel and ammo explosions? Those can really cause more damage and increase the fires. With two sub torpedoes into the Big E near Johnston Island, it did not make it to Pearl Harbor. One fuel and one ammo explosion. The task force ran over a mini-sub carrier returning to Kwaj after the Pearl Harbor raid.

But did you add that damage above to what happened in previous turns?

no i didn't see anything about fuel or ammo. Those are just the total results over the two days. Trying to gauge what kind of shape their in.

Pretty sure i should continue after them. I may transfer more BBs into my CV TFs though. I don't like those surface TF getting through to them.

I might advance my nells/betties closer to his home. Even if they don't have torpedoes they have done very well for me with bombs at 1000 ft.

What you normally want to look for is "heavy damage"; ideally "heavy damage, heavy fires" this is the best predictor of doom;

if for example there is a torpedo hit, sometimes you don't see damage reported, then that means it is not at risk.

same for fires, even heavy fires can get extinguished; so you want to see "heavy damage"

ammo explosions can be deceptive, because sometimes what explodes is a MG or a small AA cannon, which doesn't do too much damage

unless a miracle, both Yorktown and Saratoga are doomed, but it won't hurt to keep naval search and SCTF patrolling. At least you know they can't run away anymore, so search will be easy
