This scenario also warranted Alternate Forces for both sides:

This scenario was another one that could use command radii. And, in this case, I established them for all formations. Note that the courier range is 8MPs. Thus, the formation and hierarchical command radii are set to 8. Subordinate units and formations will have to be within that range to be "In Command". Beyond that they will either be "Out of Command" or, after an interval, "Under Orders".

Is the Command Radius visible on the scenario map during game play, something like what we see with supply? Does the AI observe the Command Radius?

Regards

The command radius is visible on the map via the units/formations that are either out of command or under orders (hot pink or light pink unit stripe). The AI (PO) is subject to the command radius but no special coding has been done to handle keeping its units within command range. But the PO usually does a good job keeping the units of a formation together. But maybe I should make the PO immune to command radii issues, since if units do get out of command, I'm not sure the PO will be able to handle the Under Orders mechanism. Edit: To grasp how complex this feature is, I have to admit I don't remember if the PO is subject to command radii or not. I'll have to check.

OK. I checked the code. The PO is exempt from command radii. Just forgot about that. With all there is to keep track of in this thing, it's easy to do.

I finished the update of my Sharpsburg 1862 scenario. It took 9 (full!) days to finish. After one month on this I've only updated 10 scenarios. There were 30 on the update list. I'm guessing it will take two more months to finish up, and I can't delay the completion of the code that long. What I may do is "multiplex": Alternate between a week of coding and a week of updating. We'll just have to see. This scenario was so hard to update because it included adding subordinate regiments to the existing brigades. I had done that with my Shiloh scenario and wanted to do it for all four of my ACW scenarios. But the division formations of the scenario just couldn't hold all the subordinates required. So I had to break out each brigade into its own formation => requiring objectives for each one, hierarchy links for each one, events for each one, and commanders for each one. It turned into a real task. Oh well.

Here are the Union Commanders. 73 total, 54 had to be created. Note, this time, I carefully avoided assigning commanders or building the hierarchies until I was sure I had finished adding commanders, units, or formations!

Here's the Confederate Hierarchy. (Note that the hierarchies should help players organize their forces):

Here's a sample of the Union formations. Note all the new brigade formations. Note the 32 bit names, formation sizes, flags, and service arms:

Amazingly, I found not only every CSA and USA commander from brigade command up, but all their photos as well. The American Civil war is very well documented. Meanwhile, one can barely find French ARMY commanders for World War I. Finding Corps commanders is hopeless. Finding German commanders from WWI is hit and miss as well.

Official French army order of battle for World War I for higher commands including armies and corps. The commanders are designated.

Unfortunately, the viewing is set up page by page, but it can be plowed through to obtain the surnames of the generals.

There is also a volume for the divisions.

Other links to their official history for the war can be found at

There is a list of German army and corps commanders for World War I here, but unfortunately indexed by name and not unit commanded.
