I was thinking about what we had out on the open seas going from place to place and wanted to quantify what I am moving around. This is what I came up with:



It is sorted by estimated arrival date. That date can fluctuate a little depending on refuel times for escorts or at waypoints. It does give a pretty good idea on when a TF is expected.

A couple of things to note:

1. The 7th Marine is scheduled to land at Lunga in four days. Do we want to keep that timeline or just send them back to Pago Pago and wait? Now is the time to determine that.
2. The 201st (Sep) Inf Rgt is scheduled to land at Adak Island in a week. The SCTF from San Francisco will have caught up with them by then and they should be well escorted. a
3. There is no fuel heading to Sydney at this time. There is nearly 200k of fuel lift heading back to LA for more and should have it back to Sydney within 14 days. This will be more fuel in Sydney in 30-40 days. It looks like there is a lot of fuel in ANZAC at this time, but I want to be conservative on our estimates and keep the fuel flowing!

Nevada and Perth have each taken a torpedo in the last couple of days on their daily bombardment runs on Horn Isl and Port Moresby.

Hornet is currently south of PM as our only operational USN CV in the SoPac at the moment. Harvey has RN CVs operational elsewhere.

Lunga operation has been postponed now that enemy carriers are showing up with capital ships in the area. We have also postponed the Adak operation as enemy carriers are lurking in the area according to reports.

Enterprise should be ready to go soon, giving us two fleet CVs in SoPac.

Currently covering the bombardment groups harrassing Port Moresby and Horn Isl every other day. Horn Isl's AF appears to be back open while Bunas has been shut down by Harvey's AF. Harvey has been sinking some shipping in the Coral Sea area with his Banshees based out of Port Moresby.

Continuing to build up Louganville and Ndeni for strengthing our supply lines and areas to base our major operations out of the area.

Other than that, it has been fairly quiet..and summer months are slow for turns.

Turn is back in our hands. I will post some screen shots and information.

Here is the damage to Nevada 26 of the FLT is major, and 11 of the Eng is major. She can fit in the yard at Sidney once the Enterprise is done in two weeks, and the Vincennes there can head to Brisbane once she's done with pierside so they can both fit.

She will live to fight another day. She's been great help in the area.

Enemy invasion force by Stewart Island. Likely headed for Louganville area or Ndeni.

Don't really have anything in the area to counter this with. A DD group led by an Omaha class CL is north of Suva. Too many big ships and air present, and Louganville and Ndeni don't have AFs yet.

I'll post the combat replay when I get home.. internet is awful at work today for some reason.

But, we see Nells do damage to British BBs. A multiple hits by torps on the Royal Sovereign and Revenge... Ouch!

There is a reason I micro manage naval ops. The bombardment tf went to 1 hex from Akyab and stopped. Arrrrggggh!

Very very bloody turn.

Big naval engagement in the near Ramree Island for Harvey. He's been very active over there.

The CVs we spotted SE of Solomons appear off of Cooktown and sink Horney and more than likely her big escorts (1CL, 2CAs)...we did put 9 1000lbers in the Shoho and Ryujo, though. I would like to think that is major damage, but air strikes continued to come from that hex later in the turn. Could mean more CVLs that never showed up in the combat report. HOW these ships disappeared from our air searches last turn is beyond me..we have ever inch of that area covered with overlapping searches.

Revenge and Royal Sovereign are sunk by LBA near Cox's Bazar by Nells. Figured this was coming as they were hurting bad. 98 float dmg and high 80s for each one. Harvey had up LRCAP, but they Japanese just powered through.

Win some, lose some.

Harvey has decent naval forces in his theatre...we're down to CAs and slow BBs in the South Pacific. Zero operational fleet CVs for 12 more days. It will be a good time to pull back naval forces and upgrade a lot of ships that are out and about. A good chunk are coming out of the shipyard with their upgrades, so it's a good time to switch. The Northamptons have done their refit and will be good ships to handle lighter Japanese naval threats in the area. Australia and Canberra are headed to Louganville to have naval forces in that area.

Harvey, I could use a couple of fighter squadrons that you may have extra of in Aus. Need some CAP in Louganville. I could probably use the Hornets airwings that went to Port Moresby depending on their condidtion.

For those that follow, all of our CV vs CV battles have been in almost the exact same spot. That area now has numerous CVs sunk between Port Moresby and mainland Aus.

Correct. We think it was 2 CVLs and 1 CV.

105 AC in the intial strike and 26 Zeros on CAP when we struck...so 131 AC so far..

The last two raids in that area came from the enemy carrier hex, but not near as many. More than likely they just have the CV left. That would mean they have lost 4/5 CVs and 2 CVLs to date if my memory is correct...all in the same area. We have lost Hornet, Yorktown, Saratoga, and Lexington. Enterprise was hit pretty good a month and a half ago and is about 12 days from being 100% in Sydney and she underwent upgrade during this time, so it worked out ok.

That will put one operational CV in Southern Pacific until Wasp arrives. Harvey has 2/3 I believe in Indian Ocean. Had a nice strike on the invasion force at Ramree Isl last turn.

And those British CV's will be withdrawn soon and won't be back until `44.

Analysis of Japanese Carriers in Scenario 2 up to this date (17 APR 42)



The main raid and cap over the carriers when our strike went in had 43 TB, 22 DB, and 66 F for 131 aircraft.

If Hiryu, Shoho, and Ryujo were involved that would be 132 aircraft capacity (not counting the +10%)

If Ryujo, Zuiho, and Shoho were involved that would be 108 aircraft capacity (118 at 10% over)

If Zuikaku, Shoho, and Ryujo were involved that would be 150 aircraft capacity (165 at 10% over)

My guess is the first option. Remember, the Hiryu can't change its air groups until late July. The Ryujo and Shoho are much more flexible.

Also, they have expended 43 torpedoes in two attacks. If the first option they have 29 left. The question is how many were sunk/rendered unusable by damaged carriers?

We are pretty sure the listed sunk carriers are truly that as Japanese Damage Control sucks (from personal experience). Pretty sure the Zuikaku was damaged enough to be out of the war for six months or more. This does leave the Hiryu, Ryujo, Zuiho, and Shoho active. Junyo may be active if it was accelerated sufficiently. Hiyo is probably not even if accelerated.

Ryujo and Shoho are combat ineffective, either sunk or damaged sufficiently to not be able to conduct air ops. Most of the 1000 pound bomb hits were critical hits, and I am leaning towards both being sunk or soon sinking.

This leaves the IJN with the Hiryu, Shoho, and possibly the Junyo. This is 146 capacity. We currently have 98 capacity of RN (another 33 in one more day) and 90 capacity of USN (another 76 in forty days). Our biggest issue is aircraft. May 1943 is still over a year away...

We must be careful.

Just tell me where you want them for transport.

The P-38Es need a high level to operate effectively and am recovering from overusing them at PM right now. I need them in NG/N Aus for now.

That would be fine. Thanks. We can also move around the B17s to shut down airfields in the Solomons and NG as we build up airfields. Eventually I see us basing everything out of Port Moresby when it is maxed and free of enemy troops.

I did send an email to Hartwig giving him a hard time that every time we have a CV battle it is in the same area and stop hunting our CVs...he mentioned that he just wanted to take the pressure off of his men at Port Moresby who are in terrible shape from the daily BB bombardments.

Not sure if it was just talk or if they are in fact in bad shape..

And the Japanese at PM are going to be in more bad shape after this unit moves into hex 92,130, just east of PM and then back to PM, shutting what little supply they are getting from Buna.
