OK Here is the plan in outline.

My full TF has moved 180 miles from Morotoi but kept concentrated and all my bombers set to range 1.

I figure PZB has set a fighter trap for me at Morotoi and if he has not dispersed them he will get punished.

the plan has two phases.

1. Sarmi has hit lvl 4 I have 250 P38J's and 100 4E Bombers they will go in first at 10,000 feet.

2. Aitape has 300 B24's they will go in at 6,000 feet

3. My Carriers will move 180 miles from Morotoi with cap set to 80%

OK what can go wrong.

A. Sarmi is clouded and 300 B24J's go in unescorted.......thats about the worst thing I can imagine but Sarmi cannot take 400 B24J's and 250 P38J's

B. My Carriers get intercepted by an enemy surface TF and scatters making them easy pickings but this is extremely unlikely.

C. PZB has more than the 500 ish planes I think he has at Morotoi and they all launch in one co ordinated strike

I didnt want to concentrate this way but I cannot go into Wasile with that kind of threat in my rear I need to kick the door in and neutralise Morotoi before anything else happens

YUP iT WORKED A TREAT.

He left the trap in place to long and I pulled in 2 additional carrier TF's and kicked the door in.

Thats every P38J on the map apart from 1 gp at Pearl. And every B24J Gp he let me do this to him.

The trap was a great idea and it nearly worked he should have dispersed when he realised I had spotted him. Had I attacked into the teeth of that CAP with my carrier fighters I would have blunted my carriers to the extent I had to withdraw or perhaps his retaliatory strike would have hurt.

But by letting me re concentrate and set up a counter trap I think he gave me to much time.

I could not leave that threat in my rear when I hit Wasile

I am please 790 v 160 losses so 5:1 including destroyed on the ground 125 Hellcats were lost so thats worrying

Well done! Will you do some follow-up strikes with the LBA now that you've blunted his force -- really shutdown the abse and destroy what'st left?

A quick tally on the VPs makes it look like you might just be under the 2:1 ratio in favour of Japan. Would you mind mentioning the current VP totals for both sides. If you're under 2:1 that is great headway!

I will do what I can to keep that AF closed in the short term.

The focus has to be on securing Wasile as quickly as possible and that means using my carrier air in CAS role as its to far for any of my heavies to perform that role.

So LBA gets the interdiction role on AF's my carriers deal with surface threats and help secure the landings.

I want to use this opportunity to make something clear.

I dont like using the massive CAP in a single hex apprach to win battles but in this instance I feel I had no choice given the massive numbers of aircraft (that I knew were there) the Japanese set a trap (that very nearly worked) I did what I had to do to kick it in from the inside.

IMO PZB should have dispersed and bided his time. My landings at Wasile could have been crucified had he kept those aircraft furtherback and staged them into Morotoi later.

My CAP was only going to be 200 f6F's and c 100 F4F's covering my main fleet carriers and the landing force i.e. dispersed not concentrated into one 500+ fighter CAP.

By detecting the trap ealry I was able to bring in two more fleet carrier TF's,adjust my CAP and havethe battle while my fighter pilots were fresh these factors allowed me to blunt the weapon before it struck.,

Had that attack occured while I was landing and a little more dispersed after 2 days of CAS strikes while my pilots were fatigued.......

I am now very very concerned about the upcoming battles for the Marianas

In fact I think in the face of 1 or 2 600+ aircraft strikes on a fleet that is dedicated to covering landings with Kamis in the mix the allies have a major problem.

If the Japanese allow the allies to fight the battle before the landings begin when they dont have to cover multiple threats and missions then they will lose almost every time because the allied CAP is fearsome.

Looking at another option had this been day 2 of landings the CAP over my fleet would have been c 150 fighters plus perhaps another 100 over the actual landings.

Had PZB staged 1 or 2 600+ strikes at me I think I would have lost a lot of ships.

The more I consider this the more convinced I am that it is the right decision that this is a diversion.

Menado was as far north as I was intending to go and I think that is correct he has to many good AF's in the PI I cannot afford to get caught while covering a landing by these kinds of forces especially when Kamis activate

Medck I will check VP's on next turn

OK a few thoughts for me.

If I can secure Namlea ande Wasile then I think Kendari is isolated and the whole of the area is going to be exposed.

Now If I want to keep up the pressure in the area with minimal resources while I transfer forces for the Marianas operation where should I go next.

I dont particularily want to get any closer to the PI and the masses of bases there any thoughts as to where I should go next given that objective minimal investment maximum paranoia for PZB

ORIGINAL: Andy Mac

And this is only the diversion operation for 8th Armies 'Thunderbird' offensive.

The more I look at it the more I think this operation could go a long way to being a war winner.

Accordingly General Van Der Poorten will seek to release forces that I was saving for a future Timor operation as back up for the later jumps as the troops involved in later Hydra operations will have conducted at least one prior operation and wont be as rested as in the initial Hydra landings.

I dont have many potentially available forces if I hit problems if I really scrape the bottom of the barrerl/ don't change any existing Hydra forces I can probably release a few forces these forces will be un prepared/ poorly equipped or just gun shy (i.e. 9th Aus Div has speaheaded damn near every assault launched by 1st Army I dont want to commit them again but they are a crack division on there way to Brisbane to refit)

My forces get closer and I begin the attack on Wasile.

Lots of enemt at Menado so I am keeping concnetrated also reports of aircraft at sansoper.

Any bets hes doing the flying cavalry routine again so I am heavily LR CAPPING wasile and I am going to close the AF there ASAP and hit most of the northerrn NG AF's

I cannot go after the rearward bases but he must have some limit to his airlift capacuity

OK where to begin...

The landings will start tonight and I have a nasty tricky choice.

I have chosen what should be the path of lunacy if I hadnt fought off his main attack already (if he can rinse and repeat straight away this is goingto be fun !!!)

My invasion TF's are going in supported by the Iowa TF and several DD flotillas on surface watch

My intel indicates the Jap fleet is massing at PI MORE THAN 10 hexes away !!!!

With the damage to his CA's a while back only DD's can get that close so I am ordering my Carriers in to provide close cover for the Invasion I have several DD TF's on surface combat watch and all my CV TF's are well screened

Now I will suffer a 50% reduction in CAP because I will be inshore BUT I will only have to cover 1 hex so the risk is worth it in my view.

Despite my attempts to interdict the base he is getting troops in I have total air superiority but the unit count went up last turn I will need to take this place quick if this is to work.

Andy

Wlll the top box landed at Wasile

The bottom unloaded 60 miles away.

A 100% prepped battle ready combat Corps is now screwed. PZB will air tran in massive forces and there is sweet FA I can to stop this turning into anopther mess like Noemfoor

This was my initial reaction to PZB before I had seen the mess

>This could be very very serious one of my TF's was mostly support
>troops if my armour and shock troops have not landed at Wasile I am
>seriously screwed if I don't have the combat power to take this base
>quickly and have to fuck about with transporting troops from a beach
>under constant attack from 600+ aircraft I will be shooting for
>incompetence every naval officer in the fleet and most of useless Army Generals as well.

Any one got a bright idea how I fix this one ?

p.s. PZB offered me a redo but without conclusive proof this is a bug and not a human screwup I have refused

As far as I am concerned if this is human error then it is what makes this game great ....after all this really happened in Normandy.

I have looked it over and can find no evidence of a bug so I have refused PZB's kind offer

There is a bug, at least there was some number of versions back and I've never heard of it being fixed.

Basically, if you send a transport force to a hex that has an enemy dot base (might apply to a regular base too, but I've only been bit on dot-bases), the transports will unload during the night phase even though "do not unload" is set. Strangely, only during the night phase. (again, this was a while back, things could be different).

I sent a save in long ago, don't recall that I heard anything.

So, if you stage an invasion force one hex out, it needs to be in an empty hex.

AFAIK, it never does this when passing through a hex, but if the destination hex is a dot base (and maybe real base), look out!
