If KB had of stayed put there would have been such a carrier battle. As it is the two opposing sides seemed to have passed overnight on opposite courses. KB is just a little shy of being able to hit the multitude of TFs at Wake Island. Perhaps that might be good for me. Both of us have decisions to make on force dispositions for the next turn. We both know where each other is in terms of carriers. Will the Americans stay in the vicinity of Marcus Island. Will they continue with an attempt to make the landing? Will they run and if so in which direction. I am thinking that whereever the landing forces goes the carriers will be tagging along. Would rather, of course, not to have lost all that shipping but most of them were there dropping off a long overdue (a costly planning oversight) AF unit. The unit is ashore but at the cost of the transporting ships.

So much is riding on the decisions we make for this turn. If it goes badly for me the long, long road to the end has well and truly commenced. I do live in hope though that the dice will land favourably.

And what of the anticipated carrier battle! Ships passing in the night. The Allied carriers went on a high speed run back to protect the fleets at Wake Island. I expect that the British carriers have been left as cover for Marcus Island. I don’t have air search north of Marcus so that is where I think they will be. I had SAGS set up looking for the Allied carriers should they have come racing south but we missed them. I am hoping that the carriers picked up some damage from that run and hopefully their fuel situation might be of concern for Ed.

My plan for the next day is send my carriers north west and send the planes out over Marcus to wreak whatever mayhem they can conjour up. Looking also at sending in 2 SAGs (1 of Hiei and Kirishima and the other of 4 CAs plus accompanying destroyers). It will be a knife fight if it comes off (moonlight will be around 30%) and hopefully the Allied BBs and cruisers present have expended most of their primary munitions. I am expecting the Allied TFs to hang around for another day at Marcus. If they up anchor and move on I guess I shall have to cut my loses and bow out of this phase of the war.

If Ed sends the death star on a high speed run back up to Marcus things will get interesting. Hopefully he is mystified as to the location of the Japanese. Will they come for Marcus or Wake.

If you have some DDs, send them in on low aggression in small task forces to launch torpedoes. They will then leave if there are enemy surface combat elements there but they were be fish in the water . . .

Interesting it is a big Ocean and at the start of each pass 2 days you both ended up, with your main carrier fleets beyond, his range to conduct strikes.I am sure he is wearing out his carriers sprinting back and forth.He can't adequately cover both landings with his main carrier fleet and it seems he has chosen to defend the LCUs loading at Wake for the moment,as soon as they lift anchor I am sure he will sprint back, after refueling to defend the Marcus Island TFs. I think your plan to send in surface forces is sound as no doubt his major units expended some or most of their ordinance in support of the landing. You might consider a high speed run to the NW to put Marcus between you and his main carrier fleet NW of Wake, increasing the range and making it almost impossible for him to reach your carriers with his carrier aircraft, as you can strike around the Marcus Island with the longer range of some of your carrier aircraft.

A friendly reminder regarding opsec never goes astray. I certainly do extend an awful lot of trust to anyone who is chipping in. It is interesting though on how one reads what is written. In relation to the comment regarding sending in surface forces being sound I took that to be a comment in relation to my previously stated intention to do just that. I thought that now was the time to strike and that is how the orders went out for the turn which is now away.

Now that you have highlighted it, I can see how this can also be read as tacit advice that all is good the enemy is not planning on coming this way or the enemy is planning on hanging around for a bit so go get them. Plenty has been written about opsec so all I can ask is that posted comments are done so with this in mind.

As for the thought on the Allies sprinting back…. I think that is pretty much stating the obvious. I had anticipated a southward run the previous turn and missed an overnight intercept. There is every chance that Ed will order another sprint but then again, I am formulating plans in the belief that Ed lost contact with my carriers last turn and I have been lucky enough to keep tabs on his carriers. If true I have a certain planning advantage while Ed is left to ponder where the Japanese carriers went to. If they head back north it may go badly for me… then again maybe not. Weather is playing a part in this game and I have configured my fighters as best I can to maintain adequate strike protection and CAP over the flight decks.

So, in the end I achieved what I had planned to do. As always, every Japanese ship lost is felt grievously but Kirishima did take it on the chin and went down fighting. Of the admitted Allied ships lost there is BB Indiana, DD O’Brien plus 3 xAP and 4 xAK. After receiving 7 torpedoes hits on the high seas I should be very sound in my thinking the BB Revenge is also lost (trust the torpedo bombers to gang up on the least valuable battleship). It is hard to tell just what became of Mississippi and New Mexico. While they both took 3 torpedoes Mississippi was reported as having heavy damage so of the 2, I expect she is the more likely to go down. I fully expect to see New Mexico again unless my submarines have something to say about her fate. Prince of Wales is having a tremendous war. She dodged being sunk early in the war and has been traipsing around the Pacific since then. Surely of all the Allied battleships she is the one with the most battle stars and illustrious history to date. Of all the merchant ships that took damage I calculate that it is probable that 1 AP, 4 xAP and 4 xAK will also go down. So, for the loss of Kirishima I am hoping that this day has netted 3 battleships, 1 destroyer, 1 AP, 7 xAP and 8 xAK. If so an acceptable trade.

Worthy of the trade too if I don’t mess around and expose my carriers. It is so tempting to hunt down those damaged and fleeing ships. However, I have had to move my search vectors around and I have now lost sight of the American carriers myself. Time to retreat but I am also contemplating giving Marcus Island a good going over as we leave… I shall have to think on that one.

True I am reading both AARs, as many do, and they may or may not be sending their AARs in a timely fashion, one may be posting info in their AAR as it happens and another is posting it after several days delay. My comments are not based upon what the other side is doing, but based on what I might do given the same set of circumstances presented in only this AAR. I was in the Intelligence Community for 30 years I know all about OPSEC and how to keep secrets. I do not favor one side or the other in any of these contests but enjoy watching them unfold. If you can point to where I violated OPSEC please give me an example. I base my comments only on what is presented in this AAR's information not based upon what his opponent may or may not do on what they have written in their AAR assuming that they are both submitting information as it happens and again not after a few turns have passed.

Already gave examples, in both AARs, of where one could form the view that you were asking leading questions or providing opinions on what to do next. You may consider that you are doing so only on the basis of what you know from one AAR, but nobody can guarantee that they "ignore" information which they actually do know. The possibility for subconscious bias or direction exists, even if you're doing your best to eliminate it. If I was one of the players, and read what you've posted in both AARs, I'd be pissed.

I'll leave it at that and won't comment further, as it's ultimately for the players to work out. I thought they should know.

I generally read both sides of AARs, and for that reason I generally refrain from commenting at all.

Your 1st example in this forum is a misquote of what I said. I did not say "I am sure he will sprint back with his carriers," as u miss cite. Go back and read it in context! I said, "I am sure he is wearing out his carriers when he sprints back and forth." There is as huge difference between what I wrote and what you said I wrote. One is saying he WILL do something, future actions, the other is when he DID something it wears down his carriers, results of past actions. If you are attempting to cite someone cite them accurately! On what you say is the 2nd example he stated he was going to send a surface TF into Marcus Island and attack the Allied shipping there as the Allied surface vessels should be low on ammo following the invasion bombardments, he posted the results of those bombardments in the AAR before my comment. I said that was sound tactics. Is it not sound tactics to confront a surface force with your ships fully loaded with ammo when your opponent just used up theirs in two rounds of bombardments that he stated not me. He stated his plans before I posted my comments. I simply stated facts, the Allied used up ammo and that his tactics were sound sending fully armed surface vessels against those who are short of ammo. I may be rightly accused of stating the obvious.

However, I will leave it to the forum members in the following way and will go by their decisions:

Option 1) It is ok to read both AARs in a two sided game as long as I do not comment about tactics, operations or strategy.

Option 2) It is ok to comment on tactics, operations or strategies if I am only limiting myself to reading and commenting in one AAR in a two sided contest.

Option 3) It is ok to read both AARs and make comments about tactics, operations and strategies as long I am diligent and careful not to cross contaminate the AARs.

I will ask them to vote with what they have done in the past and what they feel is appropriate. It will not be majority rules but if others feel as I do that all options are valid then I will continue to do all options as I have in the past decade on this forum. However if no one else feels that all the aforementioned options are valid then I will limit myself to options 1 and/or options 2.

I usually only read one side of an AAR. I have accidentally looked at the other side on occasion. I will sometimes intentionally go to the other side if I hear that there is a discussion going on. But I say again, I usually read only one side and that is the side that I comment on, besides giving advice.

The known positions and weather map from last turn. As you can see my search planes moved northwards and lost contact with American TFs in and around Wake Island. The American carriers are once again position unknown. Given the reported heavy rain blanketing the Japanese carrier TFs last turn I think I am fortunate that anything launched. The weather around the targets doesn't appear to have been overly welcoming either.

I have moved the carriers to a position north west of Marcus and set almost all fighters to CAP and ordered the bombers to hit the airfield on Marcus. Hopefully they are over stacked and finding supply an issue. I want to exacerbate that somewhat if I can. Recon suggests 4 units with 16500 troops.

I have on SAG TF of 2 heavy cruisers plus 2 escorting destroyers at Marcus Island. They missed the action yesterday. They have been ordered southwards for a bit to see if they can find something over night. Calculated risk as the American may well turn up tomorrow then they will become the hunted.

Well that little night time sortie found nothing and got spanked. I accepted that they would be likey to run afoul of dive bombers but was more hopeful that they would make an overnight catch. Something of a mystery this turn. The Japanese carriers were ordered to return to the Home Islands. Not doing that they say. Stood firm next door to Marcus Island. Claimed 7 or 8 planes on sea patrol doing so. Missed an opportunity to slay some APs who have strayed too close to Marcus (I guess expecting the Japanese carriers wouldn’t stay in the same place for 2 days). The American carriers are close by and clearly have had their tanks topped up with Oilers reported to be present. Very torn between again ordering the carriers to withdraw and sticking around to try and CAP trap the American bombers. Fuel situation is definitely in favour of moving on.

Good to see the submarines pick off Mississippi. Revenge still afloat!! After a reported 7 torpedoes hit her a few days ago! The subs are ordered to hang around the location of these reported battleships and see if they can deal with them once and for all.
