Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Axis #1. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Eastern Front.

The Germans and their allies on the Eastern Front still have a lot of fight in them. The Germans move first and decide to go on the offensive first.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. USSR #2. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Eastern Front.

The Soviets counterattack but in the potential effectiveness of their second counterattacks is blunted by an all out effort of the Luftwaffe in providing defensive air support.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Axis #3. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Eastern Front.

The Germans are unphased by the Soviet attempted counterattack and continue to press their offensive in the East.

In the West, Germany deals severly with a French partisan.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. USSR #4. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Eastern Front.

The Soviets continue their counterattack. The first of two goes very well when they roll a 16. However, the second goes horribly wrong when they roll a 3.

While the Western Allies are making significant gains against the Germans and Italians in the west, try as they might the Soviets can't budge the German lines. The only thing of effect that the Red Army is doing is that they're having some success with strategic bombing of German oil resources.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Axis #5. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Eastern Front.

Two more good attacks by the Germans has the Red Army and Stalin reeling.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. USSR #6. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Eastern Front.

But when Stalin is your supreme leader, you don't stop attacking the enemy because of losses. The last attack of the turn on the Eastern Front is by the Soviets and meets with some success. However, a roll of 9 is still very disappointing.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Western Allies #2. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Western France.

The remnants of the German army holding the beaches in Western France are finished off.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Western Allies #2. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Northern France.

Western Allies armor and mech forces in northern France try to break through the brittle German lines. They do have some margin of success, however, the first of two attacks while not a disaster doesn't go well when the allied player rolls a "5".

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Western Allies #2. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Northern Italy.

Is it possible for the allied player to roll higher than a 9? And, more importantly, to stop rolling 5's and 6's?!

Note that the allied player in Italy is going out of their way to keep CW corps organized in order to align Yugoslavia.

Also, these two attacks ended the allied land combat for this impulse. The majority of Western Allied units disorganized this impulse were reorganized via air supply and Eisenhower.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Western Allies #4. Combat Reporter's Notebook. France.

Three good odd's Blitz attacks all of which produced modified rolls of 23, even with an unmodified roll of 9. It's hard to mess up attacks like these.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Western Allies #4. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Italy.

Well, I guess there is a way to mess up a near sure attack. Roll a "2", which is exactly what the allied player did in the second attack which was a Blitz at +17. A "2", ahh ...

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Western Allies #6. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Italy.

Well, the allies attack results in Italy on their next impulse softens a bit the "2" they rolled on the previous impulse in Italy.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Western Allies #6. Combat Reporter's Notebook. CW Aligns Yugoslavia.

By the way it was this impulse in which the CW player was given the opportunity to align Yugoslavia. An opportunity which they gladly took.

Turn 30. Jul/Aug 1944. Western Allies #6. Combat Reporter's Notebook. Central France.

Paris surrounded. Most of the CW and USA units disorganized are reorganized by their respective HQ units. The Western Allies are ready to liberate Paris, push into Belgium and Holland and liberate them too. Everything is perfect ...

Turn 31. Sep/Oct 1944. Weather. Actions.

The allies lost the first roll for the initiative, requested a re-roll, won that one and went first. The allies were rewarded with fine weather across the globe, but specifically in the Arctic, North Temperate and the Med, where all the fighting is now. But to the allies disappointment, frustration, the weather in these three fighting zones deteriorated after the first impulse pair to rain and then to storms in the Arctic and North Temperate. Also, the allies were, again frustrated by the turn ending too soon. Well, it did end on a 40% chance this time, versus a 10% or 20% chance as in previous turns.

Turn 31. Sep/Oct 1944. Targeting of German Oil.

Targeting of German oil was again a priority this turn, with most of that targeting occurring during the first allied impulse which was the only fine weather impulse the allies got this turn. The targeting was successful and destroyed 6 of 7 German oil points.
