I believe the Royal Navy CV Furious was sunk on September 14, 1939 by a U-Boat. Possibly on September 15. Ironically, it was out on anti-U-Boat patrol, and really it didn't have much chance of ever sinking a U-Boat, as it had no depth charges on board. I might have the name wrong, it might have been the Courageous, I forget which.

The British destroyer used to rescue prisoners from the Altmark was the HMS Cossack.

I think I asked that question earlier in this thread maybe?

The planes were hit when their bombs bounced off the water and exploded in the air. This was somewhat fortunate for every one involved in the first incident, because the RAF was bombing a British submarine. In the second incident, the U-Boat captured the aircrew and took them to Germany! It took the Allies quite some time to learn how to sink a U-Boat with an airplane. WiF gets this fairly wrong in the interests of playability.

1. Operation Fork (May 10, 1940) was the Allied invasion of Iceland.
2. Operation Menace (September 23-25, 1940) was the Allies unsuccessful attempt to capture Dakar, French West Africa (now Senegal).
3. HMS Victorious was Loaned to the US fleet November 20, 1942 and refitted at Norfolk. She then served from February-August 1943 with the US Pacific Fleet.
4. Task Force 58.5 (March-May 1944), the USS Saratoga and three destroyers were loaned to the Eastern Fleet.
5. Two Japanese cruisers IJN Mogami and IJN Mikuma collided with each other after Midway.
6. Operation Cerberus the "Channel Dash" (February 11-13, 1942) consisted of the Battlecrusiers Gneisenau, Scharnhorst, Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen, 6 destroyers, 14 torpedo boats, and 26 E-boats.
7. At the Battle of Calabria (July 9, 1940) HMS Warspite hit RN Giulio Cesare from 21,500 meters away.
8. On February 16,1940 a boarding party from the destroyer HMS Cossack freed British seamen from the German supply ship Altmark.
9. The battleship HMS Royal Oak was sunk at Scapa Flow on October 14, 1939 was the first of the five Royal Navy battleships and battlecruisers lost in WWII.
10. The U-30 sighted the unarmed passenger ship SS Athenia and fired two torpedoes her hull without warning. The attack was in violation of the prize rules U-boats were to be operating under, that obliged them to stop and search potential civilian targets and allow passengers and crew to abandon ship before sinking their vessel.

Correct. Recently read two excellent books about the Arctic expeditions:
The Arctic Grail: The Quest for the Northwest Passage and The North Pole, 1818-1909 by Pierre Berton
Lady Franklin's Revenge: A True Story of Ambition, Obsession, and the Remaking of Arctic History by Ken McGoogan

We may all live to see the Northwest Passage navigable year round at the present rate.
