Most interesting results as this action commenced. The cruisers were clearly lobbing shells in at a high trajectory and getting results. The first 3 or 4 hits were all plunging fire penetrating the flight deck.

Yes ChuckBerger you are fairly close there. I would only count on Witchita (of the CAs) being lost (I'm fairly certain Chicago got away as did Wasp) and without further attention she could even make it to a base. I could be wrong but I certainly get the feeling that ships in this Mod are much tougher and more difficult to sink than in vanilla. I have kept more IJN ships afloat than I expected and ships such as Revenge also bear this out. On the other hand... there is always the spectacular example of North Carolina.

I'm not done yet but fuel is an issue. Lucky for me we are so close to the Home Island so I have been able to re stock the strike arm with new units of Vals and Kates. The American submarines has also made a belated entry onto the field so things are going to become tricky from herein to achieve more great results without the inevitable losses.

My intentions for the next day.

Heading in from the north is two battle groups poised to strike at shipping in and around Marcus Island. I am under no illusions that this may go badly as there appears to be plenty of heavy warships located here. From what I have observed, however, the approach of the heavy ships of the IJN has so far remained unspotted.

Hopefully then, the first the Allied ships will know of this is when radar picks up the approaching enemy. The first SAG is made up of BBs Fuso, Yamashiro, Ise and Hyuga plus DD Tokitasukaze. They are low on fuel so do not have orders to remain.

The follow-on SAG a couple of hexes back (the other TF is a DD detached due to low fuel) is under the command of RADM Tanaka. This TF is comprised of BBs Kongo, Nagato, Mutsu, Yamato, light cruisers Isuzu and Sendai plus an escort of DDs Nowake, Hagikaze and Oshio. No fuel issues here so this TF is ordered to remain. Plenty of dangers going on here with torpedoes, mines, PTs and a host of other possible nasty happenings possible. This may put a damper on the fine work so far, but it would be remiss of me not to employ the battle fleet. After all they have sailed all the way from Singapore to join in.

The Japanese carriers will attempt to dodge Allied subs which have now entered the field and try to attract the small force of bombers based on Marcus. The figher presence here is nasty and I am toying with the best way of employing my now reduced carrier force to deal with the aircraft based at Marcus Island. Fuel is a big concern with Junyo, Shokaku, Hiei and a bunch of destroyers detached to refuel.

It is going to be another sweaty palm of the hands turn when it plays out.

Since only one person here answered my question beside the author of this AAR it remains at 1-1. However, since it seems to bother some I will refrain from making any comments in regard to tactics, operational or strategy. I will only comment on things that have long happened and therefore cannot, in any way possibly influence any future operations. Note in this battle since I have not commented in more than 10 days, anything I have said before that did not affect this battle.

Quite the anti-climax. Probably for the best as I was becoming way to comfortable with the good results. Somehow the fleeing Lexington/Yorktown escort avoids further attention from the Japanese carriers. The merchant shipping (and all the warships) at Marcus Island hauled anchor and left overnight… narrowly avoiding the incoming Japanese battleships. Marcus Island must be full to the brim with supplies now and recon reports 70+ fighters on the ground. The battleships will be ordered to do some bombardment before they leave. In 2 minds whether to try chasing down those escort ships with the carriers or send in the dive bombers to paste the airfield. I think the airfield will be getting attention.

I had contemplated sending the Yamato SAG after the fleeing merchant ships to try for a mid ocean intercept, but I have scrubbed the idea. Hornet is essentially unaccounted for and the Brit carriers may still be lurking waiting to spring a trap. I think that this battle is about finished now that all the Allied ships are in full retreat. At least we picked up 2 more xAP and during the turn 2 SOC-1 Seagull planes were reported lost on the ground. I think it is safe to write off Wichita or possibly Vicennes.

Marcus Island might be American, but I own the seas around it, for now. I guess that says something about the result from the last few weeks of chess.

And over in Burma that big stack in the jungle has suddenly become 4 units. My mind recoils at the thought of the privation suffered by the Commonwealth forces trapped in that forest.

A small note of relief. CA Nachi (50% critical flotation damage) motors on into Manila after the long, long voyage from Rabual. Many months ago now she was knocked around in a successful surface battle only to suffer the ill effects of 2 torpedoes post battle.

So, in the end I did decide to chance my luck. Allied radar meant that the better target managed to avoid combat multiple times. Somewhat aggrieved Tanaka turns his attention to a totally unprotected convoy of thin-skinned merchants. Yamato empties her entire magazine of main calibre shells. Mutsu and Kongo still have some, but it is not much. Toying with the prospect of giving chase to the Washington TF but with 4 cruisers and a bunch of cruisers (and the advantage of radar) I think that may just be getting too greedy. Might just chase with a couple of light carriers and see if the bombers can’t snare a couple more victims.

If this was real life, heads would be rolling in the USA and Nimitz, etc. would almost certainly all be fired.

I had “An Island Too Far” in mind as well [;)]. A textbook example for a counter-offensive with too few and too early. IRL Mundy would have been relieved of duty long ago. His command style is devoid of any compassion and concern for the people and assets under his command. Leaving civilians to their fate when evacuation was possible, sacrificing entire armies in the jungles of Burma, even sending the beautiful sailing ship Pamir to the front - what a heartless butcher! Kudos to SierraJuliet! After a slow start you have played very well in the past few weeks!

Yeah, this has turned into something like PQ-17, Savo Island, and Tsushima all rolled into one. Not the kind of defeat that gets admirals fired. The kind of defeat that brings down governments and forces belligerents to sue for peace.

Reading the AARs involving Mundy are painful. I feel so sorry for the guy. He keeps getting his butt handed to him.

Gotta admire his intestinal fortitude though.

I haven't commented much in his threads because I don't want to come across as condescending with my advice.

Kurita most certainly would. Then again Tanaka did not have to deal with the the combined determination of destroyers and escort carriers plus pilots bent on making life difficult.

The toll has been more than decent for the Japanese. But such reserves as the Allies have, I really must keep this kind of attrition going – hard as that is going to become. 2 rocks and Kirishima for so much lost!

An island too far alright. I thought Marcus Island was a bit cheeky as the division which landed took a lot a disablement. So, I’m sure that Ed decided to take it on the fly after the easy success at Wake Island. That he allowed so many merchant ships to linger at Marcus Island while the battle raged not far away is not something I would have allowed. I know those ships were busy disgorging onto the island but at such a cost in the end and now I have a handy base to raid and he has a base to keep stocked up with supply. As for the move towards Iwo Jima… definitely too far and with the IJN carriers unaccounted for. One of the big lessons I learnt from reading the last conflict between CR and J3 was the value of having daily search hits on the enemy carriers and keeping the location your carriers more or less undisclosed to the enemy. I am quite sure that this, along with a hefty fighter contingent on board, went a long way towards the defeat of the American carriers in this battle.

It certainly would have been a career breaker in real life. But this is not quite true to life and I expect Ed will come roaring back once he has patched up his fleet and taken on some new replacements. Whether he changes tactics remains to be seen. As for me I have so many options open to me and will have to settle on a direction soon.

Yes, I too admire Ed’s intestinal fortitude. He doesn’t complain and is so prompt in sending out his next turn. He no doubt waiting for that moment when the IJN carriers meet their match.

I used the analogy of a man who was using to short of a blanket, he couldn't cover both his feet and neck at the same time so he forced himself into making a decision he wasn't forced to make but did by choice. So unlike Marketgarden, whose objectives were set beforehand, this was more of an objective of opportunity.
