FFS where's my CAP??? I have two Nick and two George units at the base, one George is ordered to escort the Helens on ground strike so where are the 100+ fighter/fighter bombers that should engage those bombers? Oh boy, checking during the turn shows me having set them all on training... wow, that doesn't happen all that often... Mundy caught me by surprise here as I've thought the base would be absolutely safe of air attacks as we're talking about somthing like 20 hexes to Normanton so way out of escorted bomber range... second surprise was the attack altitude of the 4Es, coming in at 28000 ft they don't hit very well, severe storms were also in our favour, still 11 aircraft lost on the ground while the enemy doesn't lose a single bomber on this long range strike... let's talk about my op losses on nav search... [8|]

I've got several AA units at the base and checking their guns, the 10cm flak can't reach 28000 ft... another wow...

a nice surprise and a low level attack could have trashed way more of my aircraft, guess he won't return a second time...

I stand corrected! When I thought last turn that the Allied bombers wouldn't return as I surely wouldn't make the same mistake again to have my fighters set to training, the enemy actually does return. When this combat popped up it caused a little smile in my face as I was sure it's going to be bloody. We get a nice number of Georges airborne (40 out of 45) but the number of scrambling Nicks was disappointing (39 out of 64). Only 10 min pre warning time at a base with several radars isn't all that great either but the result still was. The first and biggest wave was hit hard and so were the next waves until the Cap was worn down. The Georges again prove to be bomber killers, they have no problem killing a B-17, the B-24 is downed even easier. The Nicks are tougher than the Georges but just lack the firepower, what would I give for a couple of 20mm cannons in the nouse. Most kills went to the Georges but the Nicks also contributed in damaging lots and lots of bombers, at a range of 17 or 18 hexes to Normaton this turned out like a Schweinfurt raid, bomber crashing on the way back to their base. In total we claim no less than 62 4E bombers out of 89 attacking Darwin! That's not bad for 79 fighters that were scrambling and a prove that 4E bombers can't attack a defended base without fighter escort or sweeps going in first without taking a heavy toll. We lost fighters too of course, in total 21 but we only lost 6 pilots which all died when their plane was destroyed during the combat.

What we need is the Ki-102b Randy to upgrade those Nicks as the Randy carries a way better forward armament, able to deal with the 4Es better but I don't expect the Randy to show up earlier than mid 44 (normal arrival 11/44). When the first B-29 will show up I hope we will also be able to produce the Randy. There's no aircraft that changes the game as much as the B-29, due to it's insane range. We will dedicate five R&D factories to research the Randy some time late 43, guess we will have some 300-350+ if we equip all fighter bomber units.

US 32nd Infantry Division surrenders to Japanese troops some 225 miles SE of Darwin! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

This is the final battle in the defense of Darwin and another defeat for Allied forces. 28 enemy units were marching overland, most likely coming from Normanton which by now is a level 7 airfield. A first enemy unit was instantly destroyed the first day due to counter artillery fire and noticing that the enemy faces a far superior force defending Darwin the enemy immediately ordered retreat. From then on everything was decided by a single day of movement, either my troops were fast enough or the enemy would always move out faster than we could attack. Mundy made a mistake in having his motorized units running South way faster than the rest of his Army could follow which allowed me to use my three tank divs to overtake the enemy Army and move into their retreat path. Perfect Blitzkrieg in open terrain when my Inf divs then finally closed the kettle and started to destroy the enemy Army which wasn't a hard task during the engagements as the enemy had no or not much supplies.

In total there were some 1600 enemy av plus lots of support attacking Darwin and all has been destroyed! The enemy loses a HQ, a US Inf Div, 9! Australian Bgds, artillery, flak and base forces. Something like 50,000 troops. We scored over 2000 victory points for ground losses and suffered only minimal losses. A naval bombardment and a bloody air engagement also accounted for way over 100 US 4E bombers destroyed plus a couple of dozen other aircraft.

I have to admit that I never thought the enemy would try a ground campaign vs Darwin and it totally surprised my when air recon picked up that Army advancing slowly from the South East. I had a good garrison at Darwin which could have held the base for some time but we had plenty of time to bring in reinforcements when we moved in lots of arty, the three Tank divs from India and several Infantry Divs to fight in Northern Australia. What also surprised me was the huge supply drain. We had some 35,000 tons of supply at the base but it plumeted to 15,000 tons in no time and we had to move in more. The Australian lost the equivalent of three Divisions and there's no way they are gonna recover from this anytime soon with the replacement rates and some of the equipment shared with all the Commonwealth units that were destroyed in India.

This offensively fought defense is the reason why I always refrained from staying on the offense, like attacking Ceylon (suizide) or Alaska or any other target. Being in such an operation would have most likely prevented me from engaging this Allied offensive into Northern Australia like we did. And it gained us a lot for again minimal losses.

Interested question to the experts: was there ever a US Division totally lost in the war? In any war? What was the biggest unit the US lost in war?

The Philippine Division surrendered to the Japanese on the fall of Bataan & Corregidor. That's the only clear-cut loss I'm aware of.

In the Battle of the Bulge, the 106th Division was mostly destroyed - 2 regiments surrounded and lost, and heavy losses to the rest. But it wasn't disbanded, and eventually was fully reconstituted. A couple other US divisions took such heavy losses in the Ardennes (and then Nordwind) that they were combat-ineffective for some time, but not destroyed.

The largest US formation lost in war was the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), which was effectively an army-level command structure. The actual history of command structure during this time is chaotic, but I think it's fair to say that in reality the USAFFE was effectively destroyed, with a cadre (including MacArthur) escaping to reconstitute the command in Australia.

Yeah, the Philipine losses of course, those were inevitable.

Here's the current victory point screen, we're still over 6.5:1 and with the recent Allied ground losses in the Darwin operation the enemy suffered well over 28k points for ground losses already. It's adding up...

Mundy attacks again with his 4Es and when I saw 40 Georges over the target I was already cheering but it turned out to be rather strange... first the Lightnings were dispatched easily, taking them down or sending them home damaged for no Georges left when 36 Georges then attacked the 4Es... what then happened is something I've never seen so far, felt like some kind of corrupt routine... NONE of the 36 Georges was able to shoot at the bombers, it was like 200 times "George driven away..." with several fighters shot down or damaged... not a single fighter was able to engage at least one of the 31 bombers... today's airlosses leave me puzzled due to the very strange encounter with the B-24 as none of my fighters was able to even shoot at them despite a real long aerial engagement... in the end we lose no less than 10 Georges, 9 are credited to the B-24 while we only down a laughable 3 of the 4Es... the Lightnings lost 10:0 vs the Georges and the bonus was the P-40K squadron going down with the freighter off Ceylon...

losing only 1 pilot was also strange as 5 Georges were shot down over the target, 3 crashed and 2 were write offs...

a couple of days ago my destroyers were probing the enemy ability to strike shipping at Port Moresby and as there were no reaction at all we moved in some heavy cruisers to bombard Portland Roads, a level 9 airfield just 9 hexes from Port Moresby... the heavy CAs move in and plaster the base together with my fleet destroyers... also expected some 4Es at the base but they must be all at Normanton to operate against Darwin... still a success as we move in and out unscathed and did some damage...

we're used to see Allied SS hit mines and just move on but it also seems even a torpedo isn't enough to sink one... these are really moments where I'm shaking my head about the results in the game...

42 enemy aircraft reported destroyed at Portland Roads but more impressing were no IJ losses on air ASW... we planned to torch some 4Es during the night but all we found were advanced fighters and some medium bombers at the airfield, the airfield itself didn't seem to be really stacked... the bombardment kills the first Corsairs and Thunderbolts in the war which reminds me of what we're going to face in numbers anytime soon...
