Hi all,

Leslie Nielsen died... [:(]

For me his "Forbidden Planet" (1956) was great movie (also it was his start in acting career)!

Leo "Apollo11"

Surely he's not dead? Yes he is, and stop calling me Shirley.

Unfortunately yes. We can call him Shirley no more.[:(]

On a lighter note, on Thanksgiving I had a very enjoyable conversation with a RN four ringer who's the British liason officer to STRATCOM. Like you , a former sewer pipe sailor who commanded Splendid,Victourious and the Perisher....er, Periscope course. [:D]

Victorious is an SSBN. I think splendid is now tied up at Rosyth along with all the other rusting nuclear kettles.

Didn't snow last night [8D]  I didn't really think December's leave through properly though, I'm only at work 4 times next month, and they're all for the night shift [8|]

That depends.....is a chief a worker in the RN? (Not in the USN) It seems as though he couldn't say enough good about chiefs. [:)]

Not surprising. The RN, like the USN can name anything anything. And the RN never did have a naming procedure (BB=State , CA+CL+ACR=City,DD=Person,SS=Fish or number).[:(]

Also, after about 10-15 years of absolute crap, my faith in the ability of post-Soviet nations to make movies about WW2 has finally been restored.

I dont know if it is possible to get it with subtitles, but if you have the chance I highly recommend it. No politicizing or moralizing, just the real, terrible, awful reality of war. The story is all absolutely true, down to every single episode. My father was a tour guide there in his younger days and has told me many things that he himself, and other staff, learned in speaking with the survivors. He met the hero of the story as well.

My hat's off to the film makers at Belarusfilm. [&o]

And the RN never did have a naming procedure

The class names of boats proceed in alphabetical order (mostly) like classes of destroyers used to. So we had Resolution, Superb, Trafalgar, Unseen, Victorious and the not-very Astute.

Victorious was always a capital ship name in the RN. Of course nowadays, an SSBN is very much a capital ship.
