I am not sure he sees the tanks reinforcements which are further NE.
Pelton does know when to search for Russian tanks. Too bad this search ends up bad. But it is the area I intend to exploit.

I end up attacking this stack 4 times.
They do a circle retreat and eventually gave up when there was no more friendly hexes to retreat into.
