Is there something hard-coded into the game that prevents Japan from inflicting the same massacre Allied air would deliver if the tables were turned? I could provide examples or further detail, just wondering aloud.

There is no hard coding which favours one side over the other.

You should go back to first principles and note what factors are fed into the combat algorithms.

Alfred

This is after day 1 of oil wells bombing at Balikpapan.
added Tarakan and Samarinda for reference, they were destroyed long time ago, they were not attacked this turn

Image

My only 2 critiques to his defense measures is that I hardly felt any AA presence and that he didn't use Samarinda as secondary base. His CAP was vast, although I can't say if he had it layered

I am wondering if there is counter against "the hammer" attack of Allied bomber runs; probably the answer is no, that you can at most make it very expensive, a lot more expensive that what I paid for sure, but once the heavies are in range, doom will follow

exponential effort for incremental gain in defenses, most likely. If we are talking about one of the last places putting out oil in the DEI, every effort should be made.

Not for a while.

The George and Frank will level the playing field against your sweeps, and make bombing potentially more costly. But keeping the bombers "in mass" with consistent sweeps by P-38s and P-47s is hard to beat. You're limited by numbers and aircraft fatigue in bombers more than enemy right now. As long as you protect your bomber bases from naval bombardment threat, and that has its own risks for the IJN.

You're in a great position....the biggest risk now is probably trying to do too much too quick. Don't rush to failure! But balance that with maintaining pressure - you can do limited amphibs within range of LBA without CVs, and keep your opponent in an aerial war of attrition...and that will end badly for the Empire.

Nicely done!

Jan26.43: Yamato in the Makassar strait

Yes, I think baby steps, at least until I have the carriers to force my way

January 26.43
Makassar oil bombing went OK, oil wells are at 36(265)
then an interesting development... a Japanese TF was spotted 1 hex SW of Pare Pare, then my TBs at Tockambesi-eilanden found Mutsu and Yamato!!

It was too long range for torpedoes, therefore there was little damage to the battleships... certainly I am curious what is he up to, I have set two SCTFs to investigate, one with fast, one with slow battleships, both supported by multiple cruisers

Maybe we will have Jutland fleet action next turn

Jan27.43: Jutland in the Pacific

January 27.43
Jutland in the Pacific!!!
Ching Lee's battle line found Yamato and friends!

I normally won't use 25-ship TFs. but I thought this occasion required it; because Yamato guns could potentially disable multiple ships quickly, so I needed numbers to spread the pain

Also, the idea was not necessary to sink Yamato, but many months of shipyard repairs also helps the cause

Image

This was a night battle, starting range was 8,000 yards

Hits to Yamato:
- PoW managed to put two 14inch hits that penetrated Yamato's belt, plus a 3rd on superstructure and a 4th that was defeated by belt armor
- South Dakota one 16inch hit on superstructure and another one defeated by belt armor
- North Carolina, almost a tourist, one 16inch hit defeated by belt armor
- everything else were mostly 8 or 5 inch hits on belt armor, however there were a few that hit superstructure, and likely increase fires

Hits to Allies:
- South Dakota hit twice by Mutsu's 40 cms, both penetrated belt armor
- Poor Chester hit twice by Yamato's 46 cms... most likely candidate for sinking
- Not a night for Destroyers, no torpedo hits, I would say the Japanese performed better

I see you have CA Dorsetshire in the TF, that is good, it has fully functioning torpedoes.
It also looks like you have some either NZ or Australian CLs, again with good torpedoes.

Good luck. I am waiting for the full outcome results.

Jan27.43: Magnificent "Rs" sank Mutsu

Posted: Sat Sep 12, 2020 10:28 pm
by Jorge_Stanbury
3rd battle of the night:

Somerville's "slow" division, which had an ever more bizarre TF composition found the main Japanese fleet (Tanaka Raizo in command, he should be considering hara-kiri by now)... for this TF I just added as many cruisers I could (without compromising the fast division, which got most of the heavy cruisers)

so by now it was only Mutsu and DDs. Mutsu received a few low caliber hit on the 1st battle, so it was in good shape for this fight

Biggest surprise, the "Rs"!!! as Eric Clapton would sing : youuu were wonderful toniiiight [&o][&o]

Revenge and Resolution scored hit after hit on Mutsu, until it finally sank

more good news: 2 Japanese destroyers sank, 2 more very heavily damaged

The R class do good work - if they actually can catch the enemy!

there was no daytime surface combat

but what followed was the most scary LBA attack I can remember, it came at PM phase, wave after wave of all kinds of IJN airplanes, mostly Betties, Vals and Kates

in summary:
- PoW torpedoed, also hit by several 250kg bombs, radar destroyed but not a lot of damage... it also had one lucky "hit no explosion"
- North Carolina, one lucky "hit not explosion", several 250kg bombs that destroyed a gun but did little damage

End of battle analysis:

- Once again, can we say "as always?", a lone Japanese SCTF got mobbed and defeated by a group of Allied SCTFs,

- Once again, Japan tried to bombard while significant opposition was very nearby, this time he didn't bombard, which actually helped the empire, the battle results would had been worse (although not by a lot, as this was an imperial disaster) if the Allies found them with depleted ammo

- Really happy with the RN! "Rs" Revenge, Resolution and PoW pulled a lot more of than their weight in this battle, maybe because it was at night? the USN did OK, but nowhere nearly as good as the British.. PoW and Resolution were on fire!

- So far no Allied ships sunk, this might change next turn. Chester is in very bad shape, same goes for PoW and Resolution
The question of the night... how many FPs does Yamato carry? EDIT: I re-read the battle report and there is no other explanation for the loss of those Petes.. [:)]

Image

If these 4 Petes means that the monster is vanquished, then the empire is down to 4 battleships and one reinforcement

- Kongo (Kongo class)
- Haruna (Kongo class)
- Fuso (Fuso class)
- Hyuga (Ise class)
- Musashi - reinforcement (Yamato class)

Confirmed losses: Hiei, Kirishima, Ise, Nagato, Yamashiro, Mutsu, Yamato

yes, a few might had rebased... there was really no other place where I bombed petes, Balikpapan attack was targetting 100% oil wells, and there is no report of Petes hit

Godzilla is dead!

would he build Godzuki (Musashi)?

If there was too much damage from the night actions, the float planes could not take off. Unless they were in the air, they could not rebase.

Don't forget you sank Mutsu as well. But I figure six FPs is about right for two BBs.
Gotta love the righteous Allied flak in 1943!

I think that he would have been better off having lots of smaller DD TFs with low aggression orders. Launch Long Lances and RUN!

The Mutsu's FPs were Jakes, and they are accounted for in the combat losses report

He has 4 battleships + Musashi

7 heavy cruisers and 6 or 7 light ones + 4 on reinforcement . Probably enough DDs to support them although his DD losses had been heavy

If I have guess, he will not quit. I think this game still has value to offer both of us, at least until Q3 43 maybe Q4

January 28.43
The battleship Prince of Wales was a great ship, it really soldiered the 1st year of the war, mostly as a carrier escort, but also fighting surface actions
It was critical in the sinking of Yamato, but ended up heavily damaged after waves of waves of LBAs

This turn, while it was limping back to port, it was found by submarine I-18 which managed to put 3 torpedoes on it
