In the other side of the war down here the Allies reach out to nearby ports with the 4Es to see what we can find. I was almost positive there was an AKE in Singkawang, and sure enough, we laid a 500 pounder into her. No hits at other ports, but reading the ops report I found something very interesting.

So, he is hiding them there in Pontiniak, and Myoko is still afloat. Damn! I have to hold back on my impulse to strike here with everything we have because there is a larger goal for tomorrow; crushing Palembang fields with all available bombers. Everything will fly, so it should be fun!! I'll have to deal with these two later. Subs still patrol the area, so there is no easy escape.

The Japanese also tried a strike today, reaching out for ships at Singers with the Netties. A bold stroke, but only partially effective. The CAP performs well and shoots down nearly every escorting Nate as well as a good number of Nells, but one lands a torpedo on BB Resolution.

After checking once I'd opened the turn I couldn't believe the resulting damage!! Resolution was disbanded with all of 2 system damage and nothing else!!! Wow! [&o]

Royal Sovereign also got off lightly near Palembang with 4 float and 2 system damage. Overall the turn is a massive positive and a win in the air (IJ had 47 planes downed vs 3 Allied), on the sea (3-4 Japanese DD/TB sunk, a few more damaged for two Allied DD lost), and strategically. Even if Palembang still has CAP up tomorrow they won't be in tip top shape after the bombardments, and we are throwing in the kitchen sink. Fingers crossed.

Up in soviet territory things were a bit more quiet. The troops near Heiho do crush the remainder of the border fortress and push back an AA unit. Now onto that base, one of two in this sector and sure to be strong with a full division defending at least. That said we're bringing 1200 AV, 4 IDs and a good number of big tough Soviet arty units. With some help from the air I think we can get through, and if we do, it's lights out for the Japanese in this sector. These two bases need to be captured and have some forts built before the air war changes for the worse. But first things first, gotta get them.

South of Kiamuze the Japanese race in enough to hold the next hex, which is a worry, as I'm sure more is on the way. We'll hang tight until we see what's actually coming. I have one division back holding Kiamuze, and once other troops move up from the rear 700AV of tanks will also be available.

The nearly pocketed divisions continue to move into the forest hex, and once in we should be able to race around and attack this hex before they can get out again. More on that later.

In the Aleutians we land at Kiska with a Marine Raider unit, and will take the empty base tomorrow. It loos like the cavalry is on its way for the Japanese though. Something showing "CS" is coming from the Kuriles area, and I bet that is the mini-KB!

At Amchitka our Marines rested this turn and I also upgraded the commander of the engineer unit there, and tomorrow we shock! I have 4 DDs to offer some help, and they'll bombard at night and race to the West. Fingers crossed. The amphib bonus is still in effect, so he could land overwhelming force, but if we do win the base the IJ forces here will be a lot weaker, and we could fly in more if need be. The Marines and engineers won't be able to dig until they patch up all of the holes the BBs made i the past few days.

I have units prepping for Attu but it looks like I'll have to add a few more to the queue.

Here are the air losses for the 15th. Not bad, but I think there actually may be more Nates destroyed in A to A over Singers.

A few more good days and we might break even in the air war again. The Allies had gotten very close and then the Soviets lost a bunch of bombers and fighters in CAP traps and bombardments over the past few weeks.

It looks like Japan has lost almost 350 A6M2 in 3 months and a week of the campaign! A staggering number considering those had the best pilots of the early war as well. Hopefully a few more will go up in flames on the airfields tomorrow. [:)]

This group might be the single most important reason the DEI has been so contested in this game. I managed to get them into Singers and upgrade to P-38Es quite early, and once there, they've dominated the skies above and around the base.

With 189 kills to only 17 A to A losses (plus 3 ops and 11 write offs), these guys have single handedly controlled the airspace here.

We don't have many more P-38s left here, and we need them to continue to defend Singers, so I'll use them for Palembang and then keep a short leash after that for a month until the USAAF decides to release 25 more in May. That's a pittance, but should come at a great time when Tojos, Nicks and more advanced Oscar and Zero models should be coming on line.

Date production in the greater co-prosperity sphere has risen to levels that cannot be consumed by humans alone. Nells just get loaded up and fly over Allied bases from insane altitudes, which also freezes the dates. It's like oversized buckshot by the time it hits the fields. Very destructive. [;)]

A frustrating turn after so much happening on the 15th. I thought this would be the total plastering of Palembang. Instead weather shut everything down and only one sweep went over the base. This worries me as the fields could be opened up and 150 fighters could be back over again. I'll set a bombardment but I'm worried about mines and the IJN showing up in more powerful configurations. I'll have to go for it, but this is a big one. One of those turns I'll stay awake thinking about.

In the night CLs ran across from Java to Singers to pick up anything moving around. They had several interactions with IJN DDs but nothing decisive. Some SBDs did fly from Sumatra and took out another good DD, the Natsugumo. A few other small things, but nothing to write about.

We also did strike successfully at recently captured Boela, and got 5 oil hits!! Nice. I'll keep it going for tomorrow.

In the Aleutians we shock and take Amchitka!! This is good since it's definitive now that the IJN has moved up here in strength. At least two CVs and a few SCTFs. The Marines will keep pounding away and hopefully ruin this regiment and big base force.

On the 17th finally everyone flew!!! The results were not as spectacular, but did the job of keeping Palembang closed and hitting the remaining airframes on the field. The nighttime bombardments were again very effective, so now I can breahe and rest the ships for a few days at Singers. There are something like 65-70 ships listed as in the port at Palembang, so I'll go for those in the next few turns too.

For the 18th though I'll revisit some airfields and ports on Borneo. I think some more ships may be hiding in Kuching, and the Singkawang fields might be used to hit the area and protect ships moving in, so those will be the target of a bombardment.

The oil at Boela took another 2 hits in spite of some LR CAP showing up. The oil there looks to be down to 8 (18)

The best thing during the turn happened late in the day phase when S-18 put two fish into the retreating Takao!! Yes!! [&o] Finally getting a chance to put down a badly damaged CA. The messages of severe flooding and hull penetration suggest this is a mortal blow, but I'll send a few more Dutch and USN boats in to patrol both sides of this TF's trajectory to make sure. With Palembang also being shut this means CL Natori and possibly a few more DDs might be caught in the net, along with CA Myoko at Pontiniak. This could be a turning point in the naval battles of the DEI. The question is will he throw another set of ships into the meat grinder or concede the seas until the KB can be reformulated to control some space here?

The airfields at Palembang are closed, the oil has already suffered and will be targeted again soon, and the port is full of ships waiting for slaughter. It's the a reverse PI where he could run them out in single ship TFs. I'll be sending the occasional TF across from Singers to Batavia just to see what might be out there.

In the Aleutians the USN hits an AMC unloading at Agatu. Not bad. The Marines keep pounding at the Amchitka units, and should have them erased soon. All major shipping is moving back to Kodiak in case the CVs here decide to make a run. Dutch has no field and LR CAP is not enough against what is probably at least the Shokakau and Zuikaku, plus possibly another CV/CVL.

In Soviet territory the Hailar army continues to wreak havoc on the IJA, hitting the already weakened 14th and the newly arrived 20th divisions with a shock attack in the clear. IJA losses are massive, and although the Soviets also lost a chunk of tanks and infantry squads, the IJA losses are around 570+ devices destroyed plus another 340+ disabled. The Soviets only lose 65 devices destroyed and 470+ disabled.

Hopefully the pace of action will slow for a bit to recover some of the disabled squads and these troops can fan out across the plains to continue to hem in the IJA in forward positions.

Haha! Thanks, firstly, it's helpful to think about what I would hate to have happen if I were playing Japan. I've played enough good players on that side I have a few examples in mind. I always feared losing the oil, having something slow down my expansion, and having the IJN attritted early. [;)]

Secondly, by throwing everything forward I can use it when it's most useable. The P-40E has a short shelf-life in this game when Japan can make infinite Tojos, Georges and eventually Franks. In my last allied game I had hundreds sitting in pools in 43 unused. I'm trying to think of how to use every last airframe, unit and ship I can right now to cause Lowpe some problems. My Vincents flown in from So Pac just wiped out a few oil points in the DEI. Those were never anything but trainers before (and for most players) but they carry a 1,000lb bomb. Why not use them?

If I can hit the oil there is no better use for all of this stuff that will happen in 43-44 when he has a much stronger airforce and more AA with higher forts and bigger airfields. Now is the time.

So this report is the reason I'm hitting Kuching tomorrow. Any report of a CV in port within range of 4Es must be acted on I feel!! [:)]

Even if it's a CVL or CS that is great, and there are 10 ships listed. Something is there. There should be CAP up but from what it's looked like recently around here, not too much. He did fly out the CAP from Palembang to somewhere though, I'm just not sure where.

We saw what was reported as a single CV TF leave the area a few days ago, but who knows? Also, the TF near Miri is ASW as is the one at Kuching. The one at Pontiniak is listed as CA, so there is a sub present, and a few more patrolling between there and Singkawang.

The 18th opens with a surprise!! Nearly a very good surprise, but not quite. The S-47, one of 6 S-boats arriving in the North a few turns ago, ran smack into the mini-KB! [X(]

Always nice to see an IJN CV filling the combat screen in the night phase. No hits from 4 fish, but that's gotta give him the jitters. I've got about 10-12 boats total running up here and they're going to swarm the known position and expected path of the mini-KB for tomorrow. I think he'll go a bit North and forward to threaten Allied shipping and be ready for a moe toward Dutch, possibly.

A naval guard takes Agattu near Attu at the far end of the Aleutians. He doesn't have much invested out here, and that's a dot base, so it'll be hard to hold onto unless the CVs stay involved. If they do that's a win for the Allies because they're not in the DEI. If they don't I will take the remaining Aleutians and move toward the Soviet islands Japan took, the continue to the Kuriles as I can.

In the DEI it's another busy day around Palembang, and a very interesting strike on Kuching.

In the night our DMS take out a few handfuls of mines at Palembang. USN cruisers then run into DD Samidare and put her under mercilessly. I'll have to total the DDs destroyed in the past few weeks. It feels like a lot!

DM Pruitt from this TF then ran into a mine in Palembang and sank immediately.

During the day a lot of strikes hit ships at Palembang, setting fires. Only a few hits on the runways, so I'll have to make sure more planes target the fields tomorrow.

The 4Es hit Kuching and the last few strike packages got through unscathed to drop on ... BB Haruna!! [&o] Only 7 deck armor hits, but fires are started, and really, if system damage goes up from fires it could still be a while to repair a BB. He also has to think about whether to remove the ships there now, making them vulnerable to subs. We also hit and a big AV ,Kamikawa Maru.

Tomorrow I have to put some 4Es on the Djambi oil and she on Palembang fields, so these ships will have to wait.

The Dutch did manage to clear the rail line from Oosthaven to Palembang so we can now send the Indian Division, a USMC tank regiment and another brigade to Praebemolih.

The Soviets wiped out an arty unit blocking the path to Tsitsahar and will now continue. We've killed off at least 5 heavy art units now. I know he can just refill/buy them back, but that has to have a significant short term effect, since these are really powerful and he won't have them ready for the next month or two of battles.

Our units chasing the pocketed troops near Mishan will be overstacking the swamp hex next turn. I don't know if that means they'll not get enough supply in to attack, but we should at least double the IJA units here and they are moving, so have no forts. I'd really like to wear the down and slow them down.
