On our bus trip through NZ we had a man like your constant talker on the bus - and he had a voice that would carry the length of a football stadium. You did not have to be seated near him to hear him. The interesting part was to try and hear what the other persons were saying when they got a short opening!

As with your trailmate, he was a nice, effusive guy with a charming wife, but I never wanted to be seated next to him because I am not into long conversations about nothing in particular. [8|]

Unfortunately, the trail would seriously kick my butt if I tried a 51 mile hike. Egads, man! Well done.[&o]

Oh, there was one more trial on this trip. For the first two nights, we had the company of an incredible extrovert a bit older than me. He was also from Georgia and is a very nice man, but he would not shut up. He talked all the time. Anytime anybody said a word, he’d change the topic to something about him and drone on and on. He was a really nice guy, but I couldn’t stand to be around him. It was exhausting to be within 15 or 20 feet of him. So I often wandered away and left him to my sons to handle.

Sounds like low grade narcissism, really.


I drove under the AT yesterday. The stretches near me don't really look worth hiking, unfortunately. Plus I don't have the time.

Great stuff. I hiked a short bit of that trail in Shenandoah National Park when I was about 10.

I'm amazed by the lack of human presence in the photo. Looks like the land would support some sort of agricultural activity. Are there terrain features outside the view that isolate the area?

Well, it aint Georgia.

By the way, my wife will be in Scotland from Sept. 14 to 22. She's going with a few friends while I stay here working logistics (mowing grass, speaking engagements, buffing my already-tone figure, cleaning the bathroom, etc.).

John started his sabbatical back in early July. Originally, he planned to resume around August 8. In early August, he kindly wrote to advise that he wouldn't be in a position to resume until around the middle of September.

I expressed some doubt as to whether he will resume, but he assured me that he intends to. But his body language remains contrary. The reason he gave in assuring me that he will resume is that "our readers expect it." Not: "I can't wait to plan again" or something else of the sort.

I do expect him to resume. If he does, in a turn or two I'll be right back into my normal rabid pace of playing. I can't help myself. But I wouldn't mind much if John ultimately decides not to continue. It took me six weeks of cold turkey withdrawal symptoms before I re-adjusted to life without AE. Now that I've managed to kick the habit, I'm enjoying the sensation of having enough time to attend to things that need attending to.

Darn it. I'm just incapable of moderation.

One other reason I'm okay with the possibility (if that's what it is) of not resuming is that I feel like I proved the point I made when we took our first sabbatical starting in September 2013. At the time, the JFBs were proclaiming the wonders of John's impending victory in Sumatra. I made the statement that no matter what happened in Sumatra, the Allies were in great shape. Events have proven the truth to that statement.

Not that the game is over, by any means. The Allies have just invaded western New Guinea and the NE DEI in a big way. The invaison has been remarkably successful. Two of John's BBs have just been damaged (further weakening his already weak surface forces). And he jost lost 150 Jills for no return, seriously affecting his carrier ops (at least temporarily). But the DEI is tight waters where I'm surrounded by enemy bases. Things will be tough and tight. But I'm in a good position.

If John does resume, he won't have used the sabbatical to decide to consolidate his defenses, pull back, and regroup. He'll have decided to aggressively attack.

So, my first priority upon resuming will be to configure the Allied forces in preparation for attacks from all vectors by every kind of Japanese asset. That's fine by me. The Kaigun is remarkably weak. If John bleeds it badly fighting in the DEI in late '43, he's going to be hurting come '44.

I was thinking the Lake District (Northumberland?). Drove part way up one of those mountains on a one-lane road, but having to back up every time another vehicle was coming got tired really fast!

I recently spoke with John. In late July or early August, he landed awkwardly stepping down from his caboose in the rain and severely sprained his left ankle. Ouch!! This resulted in a walking boot. To add to his misery, some of his long term staff at Subway had to severely change their number of hours and forced him to work more on one leg. As he vented to me, the owners don't allow anybody but the managers, John, to work over 30 hours or else they will be force to pay for health insurance. Just modern times here in America. [:(] He also turned 50 back in May and a recent visit to his doctor came back with some health issues that he will not know the diagnosis and details of treatment until mid-Sept. He stated that both this game and mine are on hold until he finds out what this treatment will entail. Worse case may mean regular trips to Denver.
