We bomb Myitkyina from the air. He is using transports to fly in supplies, we get a few each turn as we have LRCAP up. The lead elements of the 18th Div have landed and are deplying into the perimeter. We have one regt which is badly trashed, it is marcghing out.

We have a unit acrosse the trail/rail between Katha and Myitkyina. Suspect no supply flows that way anyway as Katha is hit daily and is damaged.

Here is the situation in China with the key combats of the turn.

Now I've caught up on a few days some thoughts.

Burma can still go either way... I think we just have an edge, but that could go... if we rout badly from Myitkynia we will have trouble stopping him before Lashio. As a consequence we are advancing out of Shwebo towards his lines at Katha to try and get him to split his efforts. See picture below. We are also going to move up the strategic reserve from Singapore to Rangoon, we will reconstitute a strategic reserve by pulling southern army troops out of China.

The recent movements of the SE of Australia is expected. We estimate we have 10 days before he will start moving up the West Australia Coast (most likley), he could go into the DEI... that is 15-20 days away (most dangerous for us, but less likley). Carnavon is still being supressed, but Geraldton is now a level 6 airfield, 4 days after being a level 5! The unit count at Townsville has dropped.

Our CV forces are doing refits. The CVE/CVL will be out in about a week, the CV about 2-3 weeks. It could be a close run thing. We have strong surface fleets in the DEI though.

China is great, Tony has done a fantastic job. We are almost in a good defensive spot... our risk though is a massive Chinese Army appearing...


Aircraft research wise is going good, A5M5b comes in next month. That will be the end of the line for Naval aviation. We have just switched the research factories to J7 Shindin, which is now our focus.

B6N1 Jill is in production and the first unit has converted. The N2 version is about 3-4 months away.

The first of our Frank factories (a 50 strong one) is one point away from being repaired. Another 9 factories are under 10 to repair. We should get by September 1943.

Supply is again critical as a lot has been shipped to Burma and China. In China we are repairing factories, so need the supply, but that will pay off in the long run. Burma needs more, but focussing on repairing HI and refinery on Java first.

Resources are great, flowing nicely to Korea, fuel is ok (it is flowing from Haiphong through to Shanghai OK), and oil is moving, mostly by tanker (about 130k on the water from the DEI at the moment).

With the CV force tied up the opportunity is being taken to build up fuel stockpiles in the SWPAC.

Next turn we will "go for it" at Horn Island with Naval Aviation while our ships rearm and refuel to return to bomb the place. Another 5 BB and escorts are on the way. More fuel is also coming in.


Burma will get interesting... can we stabilise the secondary route, or will he go down the main road. Tony thinks the later, I think he will come through the secondary route. Our dilema is we can defend one well, and the main route is the most dangerous to us.

Ok a bit behind in the AAR so I'm going to cover the 19-23 Apr in a couple of posts, each post focussed on a specific area.

The Campaign for North Burma
We left the action with Myitkyina falling. Our forces retreated in fair order south towards Bhamo. Andrew sent some of his armour after us, leaving the bulk of his forces at Myitkyina to repair the base and recover.

We beat these forces on the 21st when they crossed the river. We felt though that we didn't have the strength to counterattack, and the key forces were just about out of the hex and back to Bhamo. So we have left them alone apart from some air bombing:

If you recall we had the battered elements of the 74th Regiment cutting the rail from Katha to Myitkyina. They managed to hold for several days, beating the allies handily. Eventually though a combination of air attacks and increasing ground strength has finally pushed them off the rail like into the jungle. They are in OK shape and in a good position to annoy him in the future.

As you can see from the screen shot below we still hold Warzup, mainly to deny it as long as possible. Andrew has sent a recon unit there, but will need more force to take the march there and back.

In the air Andrew has been fairly quiet. We have abushed his strikes once or twice. We LRCAP Katha and Myitkyina shooting down a couple of transport aircarft a turn. Unfortuately bad weather and a lack of supply has limited our bombers effectiveness and Myitkyina is now "open" but Katha is "closed".

Our fighter groups are in good shape and rotating through missions and recovery. The later occurs at Chiang Mai or Toungoo.

Supply has been a real problem, more is more arriving now along with an extra div of troops and arty units. The division will head to the circled hex to complete our defensive line.

Bhamo is now up to about 500AV, with the two understrength div from Myitkyina, the 65th Bde and elements of the 18th div which are being flown in from Lashio. Even with the southern Army HQ supply is a problem. The airfields are level 3 with 4 forts.

The question now is which way will Andrew come? He is taking a nice methodical approach, this has given us some time to prepare, but is harder to stop. He may have been able to push us out of central Burma... but if he had of failed he would have been in trouble. This way we aren't being pushed as hard, however he is unlikley to loose.

We left the AAR with Andrew landing at Horn island. Key actions have been:

A Betty strike where 3-4 xAP and an xAK was sunk, however the troops are ashore at Horn Island, supply may be low.

A series of air battles where we have battered the enemy CAP at moderate loss, and managed to keep Horn Island closed.

We are now running a bombardment run a turn into Portland Roads, where the bulk of his fighters are. He has medium bombers at Coen, who caused light to moderate damage on Kongo on the 21st, but today we pulled their teeth...

At this stage we are handily beating this attack. We have concentrated our surface reaction forces from the SWPAC and DEI to deal with this quickly and hard. We have been preparing and have 4 AKE and plenty of supply to keep the bombardment groups (now 4-5 of them) full. The replenishment group (4 AKE 8 AO) has now moved from Samulaki to Taberfane as it is one days movement closer for the bombardment runs.

Our CVE/L forces are now out of refit and concentrating. This would be a good time for him to come up the West Australian Coast, we are looking and waiting for that. That is why we want to crush this movement in the Torres Strait ASAP. All our SWPAC airfields are open. His 4E bombers have not been flying, they are set to Naval attack (they also attacked the Kongo group) but our TF have generally been at extreme range, and under CAP, so their impact has been minimal.

As long as Meruke remains open we are good. If it gets closed we will need to move the CVE/L over to provide CAP for our bombardment runs.

We have moved into the clear hex next to Chungking with 1500 AV of armour, another 1000 AV is following. This should encourage Andrew to pull back from the rough woods to defend Chungking. We are hammering anything moving using Oscar IIa on ground attack, whilethe Helens hit the bases.

The Oscar IIa is still in production as a long range (but poor) escort, ground attack in China and eventually for Kamikaze. We have 250 in the pool and are building 100 a month.
