I don't mean just here but elsewhere. But fast BBs in the invasion TFs instead of in SCTFs or the carrier TFs? [&:]

He also should have waited for more carriers since his carrier air is inferior in numbers to your carrier air and your LBA.

It also does not look like he flooded the area with subs to use as a tripwire. Those subs and closer in, radar picket DDs or even YMS/YPs out there patrolling.

I only have a land based Judy unit in the Marshalls that could transfer to the carriers if needed but might use it from one of the atolls, don't know yet. The Kido Butai left Truk with nearly 1100 carrier based aircraft IIRC, we should be fine up until a certain point.

Yes and no IMO. I agree, putting the modern BBs into the amphib groups were no good idea, the old BBs work just fine and there's no need for more. BUT, putting more BBs into the amphib groups saved literally all his insanely valuable APA from being whiped out. I've had comments of Allied players rating APAs as one of the most valuable ships. As there were the shiny BBs, my bombers ignored pretty much all APA (guess we got two or three up to now at best).

Invading at the end of the turn was bad but then again, not that bad as I've thought as air attacks later showed that the amphib group that was unloading at Kwajalein carried no troops anymore so all came ashore. What they did miss was ample supply. The result of the shock attack was mainly due to a very bad die roll though, lack of supply doesn't mean your troops die in droves, they just do less damage.

Waiting for more carriers? It's 7/43 and I don't know how many people would advise the Allied player to finally start attacking something. I expect him having something like 700 carrier based aircraft, that's not too bad. How should he know I have all my carriers in one place? If KB was split, I would have 1:1 carrier based ac at best. If I would have followed the advise in this AAR my carriers would support some kind of operation against Ceylon or the Aleutans and 700 carrier based ac would be more than enough to cover the Marshall invasion. The only reason I had all my carriers at Truk (really ALL) was that I was expecting an attack on either Port Moresby which was most likely in my oppinion followed by the chance of an attack against the Gilberts and or Marshalls.

He has at least one and a halve dozen subs around Truk, between Truk and the Marshalls and within the Marshalls. And he also had 4 ship TFs all around his fleet, acting like pickets. Remember me complaining about KB being in strike range on those TFs on day one of the fight? I planned to start the fight a day later.

All in all it's not decided yet but the start was excellent. With the enemy carriers out of position and two days of carnage there was nothing more the enemy could do than to disperse his fleet and run in all directions. Mostly with convoys that are slower than my carrier groups which can attack out to 8 hexes and are absolutely deadly at a range of 6 which means the Judy drops 800kg bombs.

I can asure you I took a beer after each of the latest turns. [8D]

Yeah, when I saw what the USN lost in this battle (after losing all that stuff a year ago already) I was thinking by myself how the real war would have gone on as I doubt the American public would not be happy about it at all. And that battle isn't even over yet, it has just yet started to go bad for the USN.

we have ordered our carriers South and it seems all our combat groups are directly in the path of the retreating enemy ships now... when Colorado and Massachusetts suddenly showed up I wasn't really happy because their guns clearly outgun ours but both BBs were heavily damaged from air attacks already... I guess they were even in sinking condition and just trying to limp away... our heavy cruisers pumped dozens of 20cm shells into the BBs but of course those shells couldn't do any damage even at very close range... lots of torpedoes fired at long range, all missing while our fast ships tried to decrease the range when torpedoes started slamming into the hapless enemy ships...

the engagement only ended when both BBs and the DD finally slipped beneath the waves... that cruiser group is the last task force before the carriers so that could have gone worse for us... looking at the map during the replay I wasn't all that excited as our task forces really were right in between of a high number of enemy task forces...

enemy carriers were spotted way South West of Kwajalein and they weren't ordered to move North to engage my carriers the second day of this naval battle so I was fully expecting them to run and move towards Australia or South towards the Fidjis... I WAS WRONG! [X(] On the first day we achieved full surprise as we came from the NE, showing up behind the Allied fleet engaging and destroying a high value replenishment task force and heavily hitting enemy BBs... on the second day I expected the Allied CV groups to engage but they didn't, they stayed far off KB and the rest of the fleet was scattered... now on day three when I expect the Allied carriers to actually move away they are ordered to turn around which is more like a move East which puts them in perfect strike range of KB... well, actually puts them in perfect strike range of both sides carriers which isn't all that much to my liking as a single 1000lb bomb can mean the death of any IJN carrier considering the horrible damage control...

being only five hexes from the Allied carriers I expected a real carnage but the good thing was seeing my LBA attacking first... I had two Nell units at Tarawa which were set to 10 hexes attack range as I've thought they would be be handy to attack some damaged BBs or the running freighters but the Allied carriers being nearby they were the primary target of course... that meant we had both George squadrons being on escort against the Allied carriers which was really bad news for them... the enemy can't even scramble 200 fighters of different types to protect the fleet so our LBA was whittling down a good number already... while the Gerges were doing great against the CAP it was no surprise that most of the bombers were shot down even before they were able to attack the enemy ships...

needless to say I was totally excited at this point of the engagement, sitting on needles... I noticed KB being in a hex with perfect weather while the enemy fleet again sits in a Thunderstorm hex, some really bad luck for us here...

while the die roll for weather couldn't have gone worse, the order of attack couldn't have gone better as it were the the Betties from Mili attacking next, escorted by two Frank units... look at the enemy CAP! [X(] the Nell strike with the Georges faced something like 100 fighters more on CAP and now we have even more escorts than the enemy has fighters on CAP... I knew at this point that this is not going to go very well for the enemy...

despite having more escorts than CAP fighters the CAP still managed to engage our bombers, downing them in droves which isn't nice to see losing all those highly skilled crews... 7 Betties break through to the enemy ships and a group of 6 put three torps into CVE Corregidor which seems to shrug them off easily though... no follow up explosions and the CVE is not showing up as heavily damaged... the hits on the CVE weren't the most important thing though, it was further reducing the enemy's CAP so KB's bomber can wreck havoc...

three air strikes from LBA stationed at Tarawa and Mili meant the enemy CAP was down from nearly 200 (which seemed awfully low already) to only 33 enemy fighters when KB's main strike was showing up... having three times more Zeroes on escort meant nothing though, the enemy fighters still attacked my bombers, downing something like a good dozen but then the bombers screamed down on the enemy flattops... one bomber after another was dropping a bomb or a torpedo and MISSED... this was the moment I was really going nuts about the weather when I thought everything was perfect and due to weather we can't do damage... heck, to be honest, KB's main strike couldn't even knock out more than the CVL, every other carrier was still operational at the end of our alpha strike...

Prince of Wales was focussed by quite a lot of Judies and the 800kg bombs slammed into the ship leaving her behind as a floating wreck but the carriers were still operational... have this sized strike go in against such a meager CAP and in "ok" weather and that carrier fleet would be annihilated... Essex at least suffered a fuel storage explosion which should increase the damage... we had 74 Jills in this strike and manage a whopping TWO torp hits... those Jills coming from the smaller carriers had bombs as the carriers can only support two or three strikes with bombs and those were used in the first two days, mostly at non worthy targets...

then it was time for the USN's main strike... detecting the enemy's strike at 80 NM was ok, we're talking about the IJN here after all, Allied radar was able to detect our strike at 120 NM... unlike the enemy, we can throw nearly 500 fighters on CAP against the incoming strike though which means our CAP is pretty much bullet prove as the enemy's strike isn't all that threatening considering only 72 escorts and not even 100 bombers... I noted several bombers turning back during the engagement as they suffered horrendous losses against my land based CAP the previous days already so their morale was low...

our CAP rather quickly turned against the bombers and all were shot down or turned back except three TBF which came in to drop bombs targetting the newly commissioned CV Unryu... all bombs fell way off the target and another bomber was shot down... enemy carriers being damaged and their main strike being whiped out means this has to become a major victory for the IJN... ship crews within KB were cheering BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! [&o]

was funny to see RO-68 missing heavily damaged Mississippi with a full spread of torps at the end of the day...

I really couldn't believe what was happening this turn... I absolutely didn't expect a carrier engagement, no way... instead of running South or South West the enemy carriers turned East and ended up in strike range... then of course we have bad luck and the enemy is sitting in thunderstorms totally hampering our strikes... to top it off, KB doesn't launch a single bomber against the enemy carriers in the afternoon despite them being a perfect target pretty much without remaining aircover (but of course sitting in thunderstorms again)...

so to sum it up, we have damaged the enemy CV groups but they are well from beaten... I'm not expecting them to defeat KB which must be pretty much impossible at this stage but who knows how much damage they can inflict, we sure will lose more aircraft which would be avaidable if KB had attacked again in the afternoon...

perhaps I shouldn't bitch about it and I should party because the enemy made a surely wrong decision to have his carriers not run South... I guess he thought I would attack the running amphib groups North but I moved South to attack the amphib groups there...

today's airlosses were of course severe... with more or less a full land based unit being whiped out the Judies lead in our losses, several small but unescorted strikes from KB agains the carriers weren't helpfull either... the Nells and Betties had to be sacrificed so the Georges and Franks could tangle with the enemy CAP which was extremely helpfull for KB's (only) main strike... 240 aircraft lost in one day sure is a number though as we haven't sunk a single enemy carrier today, we probably haven't even knocked out more than one or two...

I doubt that the enemy will be able to pose a serious offensive threat though and I'm not sure what he can assemble to engage in a possible surface engagement with the losses in BBs in the first two days...

that's the plan for tomorrow, KB has the order to destroy the enemy carrier fleet of course... not sure if the enemy CVs will continue heading East but if they turn we might still be in range and if not we can follow them the coming days as they should be slowed down... Northern Allied task forces all seem to head towards Pearl Harbour, the task force SE of KB was the one we actually thought to engage today when the enemy carriers showed up...

and then it was time for KB's main strike coming in with not even a hudred Zeroes which totally surprised me as I expected something like 200 escorts... checking my carriers later showed another tactical mistake as my CVEs ran out of sorties... [8|] I should have ordered the CVE's to cover the fleet and more of the fleet carriers to escort my strikes as I didn't expect anything offensively dangerous coming in from the enemy... so we only have about 50% of the expected escort and the Zeroes really sucked which makes all this just worse... the enemy not even had 50 fighters left but many of them attacked the bombers downing high numbers of them...

what went in to attack the ships suffered from a still really intense flak but there were quite some hits knocking out at least a good number of CVEs... it's the first time CV Victorious shows up in the target list, we knew a Brit carrier would be around due to the Martlets but I didn't know which one... Hornet took four bombs and was hit by a sub torp days ago but still doesn't show up as heavily damaged... the brittle CVEs suffered additional damage from fuel and ammo storage explosions so are either in sinking condition or so heavily damaged that they won't be able to launch any more fighters...

air losses were really frustrating today... with the nearly 180 today we are up to something like 600+ for the last three days, at least 200 would have been avoidable with a double strike on the enemy carriers yesterday... today's strike did damage but the enemy carriers are still not sunk... while another halve dozen CVE are done we still have USN CVs around that might even make it back if not further attacked...

KB's fighter force is still more or less in full strenght while the enemy has no offensive potential anymore but our bomber force is trashed now, leaving us with perhaps a hundred operational bombers...
