okay... KB pops up 6 hexes NE of Cooktown (which is full of my aircraft) because Hortlund spotted my TF with LST/LCI going North, close to the coast, on transfer to Darwin. While he moved KB into bomber range before, at least he did it at the max distance possible, so to say at least he staid near the coast of New Guinea. Since a couple of turns, I have agreed to not to use my 4Es on nav attack anymore because they have such a high hit rate and they can fly out to 14 hexes (quote Hortlund).

Once again I was too dumb in my agreements! [>:] It´s pretty much ridicoulos enough to limit the 300 4Es when I face 500 Betties that are 5 times more dangerous even up to 15 hexes. But what makes me really thinking about the agreements is the fact that my opponent immediately "exploits" them. No way would he moved so close to one of my level 6 bases when he knows that it is full of bombers (and HE KNOWS COOKTWON IS FULL OF BOMBERS) when my bombers would still be allowed to fly nav attacks. Now in real life those bombers never flew against KB, that was because IJN high command never was dumb enough to send them so close to 300 medium and heavy bombers. But my humble opponent now knows that if I would set my bombers to nav attack, I wouldn´t follow the hr I´ve just recently agreed to. So he could cry foul... As a result he just sails KB next to Australia´s East Coast to hunt this TF... sorry, but this just sucks! You can´t ask your opponent to tie one hand on his back because "historical blah blah blah" and then 10 turns later you take total advantage of this. To repeat it again: in one and a half year of game time, KB never dared to go so close to one of my major bomber bases, now I agree to such a house rule and I´m immediately punished for my idioticy of agreeing to it.

The loss of those ships isn´t severe at all and that´s not what makes me upset, it´s the style this PBEM is going to be honest. The fact that KB can launch more aircraft in one turn (not just in one turn, this is in ONE PHASE of the turn as there were no strikes in the morning) than my equivalent of KB in several turns is another thing and I just shake my had. Not to start talking about the hit rates...

As a side note: NOT A SINGLE AIRCRAFT FROM THOSE KB STRIKES WAS LOST! Not to flak, not to ops...

I have flown in 200 medium bombers and have set them to low level nav attacks tomorrow... but if we even launch, we will face some 150 Zeroes on Cap... and I´m not allowe to use my Libs...

You have to decide what type of game you want to play!!  Are you going to play a game in which,"if it wasn't done IRL, then it CANNOT be done in your game OR we can use the historical forces that were available as long as we don't use them in ways that exploit the game engine limitations?"

You seem determined to cut off your nose despite your face. [:(]

There is a part of me that wants to ask why you continue to play this particular PBEM??  Is it still fun for you??  Some of yours rants every few days about strikes not launching, super-Zeros, etc., tells me not.[8|][8|]

I will play on this game, as mentioned earlier, the "big picture" works. But this will still not make me happy or quiet when I see Zeroes achieving kill rates between 15 and 20:1 against 80 exp carrier based Wildcats, nor will I be happy when the game decides day after day not to launch my British torp bombers or only 10-20% of my carrier based strike aircraft against 50+ enemy ships 3 hexes away day after day or when I see KB popping up next to one of my bases because we now have a hr about heavy bombers not on nav attack and to top it off the strike routine then enables KB (which means all CVs in one TF) to launch three times the aircraft in one phase than my carriers do in one day to totally annihilate a convoy of a dozen ships.

The question about historical yes or no is easily explained. The recently brought up historical hr restricts me of using heavy bombers (except some Navy bombers and two B-17 BGs), but it also enables my opponent now to unhistorically sail next to my major airbases... [;)]

No matter how you play it or what hrs you have, many game mechanics or routines will just lead to unhistorical and unrealistical results and the acting of players (I don´t exclude me) will do the rest. Many things will be cured with the Admiral´s edition, many things will stay the same.

it seems there are no more Japanese troops flown in as their assault value is constant now. No need to fly in more anyway as I´m lacking at least another 700 assault points to bring the defenders in serious danger. My carriers are now going back to Darwin, guess the game will become quiet again.

The recently sunk CL Helena:

USS Helena (CL-50), 1939-1943

USS Helena, a 10,000-ton Saint Louis class light cruiser built at the New York Navy Yard, was commissioned in September 1939. After serving in the Atlantic in 1939-40, she was transferred to the Pacific, where she spent the rest of a short, eventful career. While tied up alongside 1010 dock at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, Helena was hit by a single torpedo during the Japanese raid of 7 December 1941, flooding an engine room and boiler room. Repair and modification work at the Pearl Harbor and Mare Island Navy Yards lasted through June 1942.

In the summer of 1942, Helena was sent to the South Pacific, where she participated actively in the Guadalcanal campaign. She rescued survivors of USS Wasp (CV-7) when that carrier was sunk by an enemy submarine on 15 September. Twice, in the 11-12 October Battle of Cape Esperance and the 13 November 1942 Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, Helena engaged in night surface combat, making important contributions to thwarting Japanese bombardments of vital Henderson Field. In January 1943, late in the Guadalcanal campaign, she twice shelled Japanese bases on New Georgia and Kolombangara islands.

Following a quick overhaul at Sydney, Australia, Helena returned to the combat zone in March 1943. She again bombarded enemy positions before and during the invasion of New Georgia and Rendova. In the early morning of 6 July 1943, Helena was part of a task force that fought Japanese destroyers in the Battle of Kula Gulf. Hit by three torpedoes in that action, the cruiser was broken into three parts and sunk, with the loss of nearly 170 of her crewmen.

Image

[X(][X(][X(] looks like I´ve had my mouth open to wide! Exactly what happened to my CL in the game, happened to CL Helena in real life! She took three torps in a surface engagement and sunk! Holy crap!

But I still think that Japanese naval forces have a far too high hit rate with long lances. I´m still a JFB, even though I play the Allied side in this game and while it makes my favouritej side weaker I would still prefer to see more reasonable hit rates...

KB is again spotted, now moving along the coast towards Port Moresby with at least one other TF. I guess this is an evac convoy or a resupply convoy but pretty sure it´s an evacuation attempt to bring those troops North. I also expect to see all those bases in the Pacific (especially New Caledonia and the Solomons) to be pretty much stripped of Japanese garrisson troops in the near future.

yes, I insisted in the Navy PB4Y and the two B-17 BG (as at least B-17s did some nav attacks) I have as otherwise he could feel 100% secure as soon as he would be 8 hexes away from my bases. The downside is that I get only 10 Navy Libs a month...

Next turn could get interesting! We have spotted CA Maya and half a dozen CAs more with DD escorts going into position exactly 6 hexes from Kai Island. Hortlund has reconned this base daily with Irvings, so I guess this is an attempt to kill a lot of my first line aircraft. We have 2x6 PTs there and the surface combat TF that is going with my carriers will move to Kai also. I wanted to send in the reinforcements for the Babo invasion tomorrow but they have to wait a day now and will move with the carriers one hex to the North. Hortlund has spotted my carriers the last couple of days, so it´s highly careless to even have his cruisers there. Perhaps he´s very confident because of the bad hit rate of my carrier based bombers so far. The Barracudas could have reached them today already, but they decided to go after the empty transports. Oh well... we will see what happens tomorrow. Only reasonable order he could give would be to retreat his ships...

we attack the evac TF that came from Thursday Island, now 2 hexes West of PM. KB is one hex further South, so either Hortlund´s follow order didn´t work or he thought my bombers would attack KB. We achieve only a couple of bomb hits on big APs, none of them will sink. Of course the CAs were bomb prove, so the attack of 125 land based bombers with exp between 70 and 85 did no damage. Under that aspect and the fact that 125 Betties would annihilate such a TF, I again raise the question why an Allied player should limit his 4Es to any hr when it comes down to naval attacks.

Lucky Hortlund. Believe it or not, the enemy CAs are now parked two hexes North of 500+ carrier based ac! What is Hortlund thinking? The Zeroes are worthy opponents if used en masse, this time they get shot to pieces. Those daitais must have lost a lot of their high exp pilots in the fights in the last weeks as they are nowhere as competitive as they were 14 days ago. As you can see, my strike did no damage. One British torp hit CA Furutaka and was a DUD! LOL

But hey, my carriers will take care of this CA TF! Unfortunately my carriers are clouded in the morning phase, no problem, they will attack in the afternoon. And yes, no clouds in the afternoon... and then?? NOTHING!! [&:] Ladies and Gentlemen! I mentioned it before and I just have to say it again. The luck my opponent seems to have is ridicoulos, once again he pulls off a stunt that only can be couled highly careless, suicidical, unbelievable over-selfconfident! It seems I´m playing the AI on super hard, when the enemy gets all kind of help to be somewhere competitive, but what has been happening in this PBEM is so far from anything I´ve seen before that I´m starting to think I´m dreaming. I remember Hortlund parking his BBs at Chandpur, in mini range of 300 high exp bombers, including 50 torp bombers and 400 fighters and while it was clear weather, nothing happened. Pffff I thought, pull off such a stunt again and you will pay. What did he do? The next day he parked his BBs at Diamond Harbour and again nothing happened. Today, he has a CA TF two hexes away from my carriers that have all orders right, are split into three TFs, have 100% sorties left and NOTHING happens. I´ve talked to Hortlund and I think he can´t really believe what´s happening either, as he said he thinks I´m managing my carriers wrong. Well, what can I do? I´m not responsible for the weather, I can´t click on a button and say: "Launch 200 bombers and 100 fighters against this cruiser TF 120 miles away"...

another strike? Those strikes are coming from Biak, range 5. Hortlund should set his bombers on 4 hexes range as they would then only attack the TFs in the invasion hex and that´s what I´ve feared the most so far. I didn´t attack Biak with Liberators as I didn´t want to point out how important this base was in the defense of Babo. Hortlund obviously overlooked that so far, good for us...

and this is the main strike, again aimed at my carriers. Look at the kill rate of my Wildcats. Neither Hortlund nor I do understand the outcomes of aerial engagements in Nikmod. While the 80 exp Zeroes take down my 80 exp Wildcats at a 15-20:1 kill rate, the (better) Tojos lose 16:1 and those Tojos aren´t 30 exp pilots. I can´t explain it, I do find those results as far off as the unbelievable kill rates of super Zeroes against equal skilled Wildcats. With what we were always told what would be important in A2A in the game, the Tojo would be far more dangerous than a Zero. The only ace the Zero has is a very high man rating and this seems to enable it to be so deadly against Wildcats. The faster Tojo but far less maneuverable loses just as Nates would lose... [&:]

moved all available Libs to Darwin (range 14) and attacked Biak today. Yesterday the bombers didn´t fly, the airfield is empty though. Would need another attack to close the airfield but I guess with the recent horrendous air losses, he won´t try to attack my carriers again. I just don´t understand why he didn´t fill up all those airfields in this area with bombers and fighters to crush my carriers when the first invasion took place. It now seems to be already too late. Kai Ilsand reached level 5 airfield btw, from level 1(2) to 5(2) in three weeks. Babo is also level 1(2) and then we can base 500 aircraft on the two airfields in this area, will be hard for enemy shipping in this region then.

enemy troop strenght is going up, Hortlund is flying in more troops. A para unit has been spotted. That´s fine with me, the more troops he will bring, the more he will lose there and I doubt an air bridge will save Babo. 500 troops a day can be flown in, I thought about putting my carriers into the base hex to see my Cap taking down a dozen transports.

would like to see my bombers attack different targets at Babo. There are 8 units, all nearly with the same assault value, so it doesn´t really help us if we always attack this regiment. It´s a wise decision (deliberately or by accident) that the enemy has a couple of units there, bringing the total av to the equivalent of a division than to have one division there. A2G attacks against the division would reduce it´s adjusted av to 20 or 25% due to disruption, the attack on just one small unit doesn´t harm the total av at all...

first deliberate attack and I´m amazed and surprised to see level 9 forts! I expected level 6 forts max but I guess EVERY base that will be attacked in future has the usual level 9 forts. We´re not that far from a 1:1 but I guess we will need at least another 6 or 7 attacks to see the base surrender and it also means I will need some more reinforcements. The TK units that assaulted Kai Island are all at 100/100 again and they will be brought in to Babo as well as another Australian division. Every unit that will be 50% disabled will be brought back to Darwin for r&r and prep for another target further North.
