So I've got ABDA which is a small 45 squad Command HQ prepping for Palembang, and I've changed out the leader but the experience level is quite low. I have another decently led Army HQ for the Dutch in Batavia that I am planning to shift to Oosthaven and up the rail to Prabemolih to also help out. Neither will be fully prepped for a while, but could still help.

My feelings, summarized:

Obvert is being a little humble here.

This Allied AAR has been the 'meanest knife fight' AAR I have ever followed.

Both opponents have resorted to some incredible non traditional attacks since Dec 1941. US Carriers off Java in January. In depth defense in the PI and Japan skirting the PI till latter. A Japanese move (mistakenly or not) into Russia. Mis direction - lies - and dirty punching... in a fun sort of way evidently. [8D]

However O has completed 3 things I have not seen before.

1) The non traditional use of Carriers and SBD early put the KB on a defensive footing - amazing.
2) Oil has been bombed more effectively than I have ever seen this early - amazing

Here's a shot of the Java and lower Sumatra area and the state of Palembang. Looks like the situation is good, and as you can see more am-hubs are arriving from OZ and India to Oosthaven and Benkolen. Three more brigades here, which is good since it looks like he's flying in the 4th division to Sumatra, split with one regiment coming into Djambi and two others at Palembang. More grist for the mill!! [;)]

It's an odd look at the port, with AS across the screen shown, but only 1 ship recorded in port. Our recon Buffs are repairing, so the info is suspect until we get real pics again.

We are up to 55k supply in Singers.

Only a week left of the invasion bonus. No sign of more landing TFs moving yet. I've got improved search from Aussie Hudsons in the area now too.

Our subs are really having an impact on the game now. I'm not sure if they're gaining in experience, if there are becoming fewer escorts for the IJN, or if his ASW air is stretched thin. Whatever the cause, this turn starts with a few bangs. [:)]

First DD Takaze is hit with a fish from Dutch sub KVII near Ketapang. This little DD should sink from that, and there were sinking sounds throughout the turn, but not directly after this attack. As you can see from the many sightings below, subs are also keeping good track of IJN ship movement now. He's still adding DDs to the mix here, so in a few turns all hell may break loose when our cruisers are all ready and the dings knocked out at Singers. CA Chester is back after a long repair, and is another ship with great night experience now.

Next up Pike puts a DD into Minegumo. This is at Singkawang, so the ship will most likely survive. We may have to visit the port there soon though!

The S-37 misses Yugumo near Muntok. These are top notch IJN DDs, so getting a few of them in the next week would be great. I usually reserve Yugumos for the KB.

Soviet subs even get into the action, with SS ShCh-120 sinking xAP Mizuho Maru with two hits off of Formosa.

The USN CAs bombard Toboali which has a level 3 field. I want to make sure this isn't used to support Palembang. I'll deal with Level 1 Muntok soon.

Weather seems to have socked in all of our bombers going for Palembang, but a sweep of P-39Ds does fly. Clear sky over the base, and they find a LR CAP of A6M2 there. It's the Kaga and Aka fighter groups, and these must not have the pilots they used to. The USAAF jocks got 4 kills and 6 destroyed zeros on the day! Got our quote of 5/day destroyed zeros! According to Allied records, that's 500+ destroyed for the campaign!! In 3 1/2 months! [X(][&o]

The 4Es do get another 12 hits onto the oil at Djambi. It's tough going here with some good AA in base, but have to keep at it for the next few days. Then switching to Palembang.

Ok. The Soviets have a dilemma. The first big challenge of the ground war that could have extended repercussions.

Three tank brigades reacted into Tsitsahar. The border looks green but I don't know if my big army moving through will shock or not. It could be disaster, but I have to go for it. Otherwise the entire theatre could turn. So the plan is to cross with the entire army but have the remaining tank units, about 550AV, turn to the North to cross and open the hex side on the Northern road. Then I could extricate the army and march quickly to the Heiho/Yenki pocket and crush remaining defences there before hunkering down for the counter offensive.

Reserves are mobilising into strat mode in the South, just in case it all goes horribly.

In the swamps of the Mishan area the large Soviet army tries a DA and fails miserably. Big losses here. Yuck. Recon said only 16k troops in the hex, so I thought a division had moved out. No such luck. There is still a good opportunity here though, as the tanks can speed around once the IJA moves out. He can't have many reserves to add to this now so maybe I can make an end run flanking manoeuvre and still get this edge chopped off the Japanese position, which would then require him to really pay attention and send some extras this way.

Judging by our first bombardment Heiho has significant forts. Yikes. This will be dealt with indirectly. Luckily a division is already marching to begin isolating the base, and if we can pull off the move at Tsitsahar, then we will approach this base from the South as well.

This is easily the worst day of the Soviet portion of the war, but I still feel optimistic here. The replacements are good for all but the tanks, and all of these campaigns have resulted in significant IJA losses that will take them some time to recover from. Also, I am thinking several of the divisions at Tsitsahar begin in China, so some opportunities could open up over there once some big Corps have filled out in the NW deserts. I see the Peiking area being very vulnerable for troops walking in from the NW.

Elsewhere we've been bombing in China a bit, hitting Hankow. No fighters have interdicted so far. Got a few LB and RC on the ground there.

I'll start trying to hit light industry soon as well. In fact I'm considering moving a large portion of the Soviet air force to China soon. They are non-restricted, and could easily move here and fly supported by supply coming in from the Soviet off map rail link.

Another attack at Lashio most hits the Chinese and the BFF brigade. The AV of the IJA units is steadily dropping though, which is good.

The Japanese are also facing some adversity at Wenchow. The IJA divisions, three of them, now have a combined AV somewhere around 550 after todays DA. Didn't go well for them. The Chinese Corps here is just gaining experience and getting tougher, and supply is holding in spit of regular daily bombing runs.

At Djambi and at Palembang the bombardments revealed that we're facing pieces of the 4th Division. Was this the noe that was shattered in the Singapore crossing? I'll have to check. If that is the case, it might be reduced in experience. Still, I need 4x AV at Palembang to have a chance and have no idea what his forts are there.

My troops are of highly variable experience. The Aussies are good, around 65-70, but one still has militia squads. The Indian division is at 48 exp. One Indian brigade is at only 35 exp. I do have some good tanks moving in though, with a decent Indian brigade and the USMC regiment.

I'll get three brigades to Djambi first and take that base, then move on Palembang, but I want to keep port highly damaged, the fields closed and lots of LR CAP over the base from Prabemolih to make sure and reduce the number of troops potentially flying in.

I think this must be half of the total engineering units on the map for the Japanese right now in Palembang. [:D]

I probably would've been inclined to let him shock the tanks out and replace them (they would retreat NW to the rest of your stack), and go around. I wouldn't feel the need to rush anything.

I wanted to count these up since it looks like they've taken a major hit lately. He is still using them aggressively, so maybe doesn't think there is a DD shortage yet.

That is a LOT considering the starting total is 113 and Jaapn only built another 63 during the war. Of course the player here can get a few more through acceleration, still, this seems to me critical already.

Totalling this up (and I haven't looked to see if all recent sinking are listed) means I will be even moe aggressive to engage roving Japanese destroyers in the DEI. Lowpe likes to use them in small TFs, and that makes them even more vulnerable to being outgunned, isolated and picked off by subs.

Ahh, yes, probably right.

I'm banking on the fact that I know only a few of these troops have been here for a while, and some may still be coming out of strat mode. Plus two of the divisions are shattered and low morale. I thought long and hard and decided to do it. It may be a mistake in the end, but hopefully just a speed bump and it could force a further difficulty for the IJA.

Some of the best secondary escorts for the IJN early are the DMS ships. These also are invaluable in sweeping protected bases. They are well armed and can duke it out a bit more than the AM/AMc types.

We still have some months where the naval battles in the DEI will be very important, so I hope I can take out another 10-15 DDs before the air supremacy of the new airframes begins to control the area. As a Japanese player though I agree, it's dicey to have so few escorts for the major capital ships and KB.
