A some novice question: This is a game with Nik mod o something???
I say because i'm very surprised for the japanese carrier clumsiness.....
So big damage with dutch, british land based planes??? it's very strange..
BTW, Great AAR!!! Keep on![&o]
Fremen;
Thx
Like Terminus said...it's stock
The biggest damage was done by the Beauforts, which pack a sting at torpedo loadout range (4 hexes)..and I believe they are more durable than let's say a TBD. Plus they were trained up on underdefended-transports and land attacks where they can acquire experience without getting killed [:)]. The Beaufort and Wellington Sdrns in this raid were high 70 to low 80 experience range and had been purposely rested to very high morale (90's). The Swordfish is not really a bad plane either, although this particular group is green, most of their squadron mates having been killed in the battle for Palembang.
Also, a successful attack required the better US fighters..Dutch Hawks, Demons or even worse, Brewsters would have been slaughtered. The morning raid had over 60 P-40E's, P-39's and Wildcats. The P-40E pilots are "elite" with high 70's group experience, the "zero bonus" s phased out and the Jap pilots must have been fatigued.

Wow, serious carnage. The enemy seems to move his CVs within range of your LBA all too often, and now seems to be paying the price. Your caption says "carrier battles," but I don't see any Allied carriers involved in the action...
Yes..good point. Misleading title. No Allied carriers this battle.

Koepang is really getting polluted with shell casings and burnt out planes.
Despite at least a hundred bombers at Bali and Soerabaja...and 8-9 US and Dutch subs, all the wounded Jap carriers make it back to safety (except the Junyo, which is sunk by B-17's)
Now the action in the NEI switches to Koepang.

It hardly seems Timor is worth this much sacrifice. [:)]

But isn't that the way the real Guadacanal campaign started? Just a slow escalation until both sides were too committed to back down.
Your war may not last until 1945, but it sure makes for an interesting read.

Good analogy really. Allies in possession of an island airfield with insufficient support equipment. Allies have about 2/3 of a division equivalent ashore, Japs certainly more than that but are having supply or fatigue problems.
Not enough carrier strike power to shut down the airfield (USN and RN carriers are in the Coral Sea)..so both sides resort to running in surface forces at night, the Japs to bombard and the US to drive off Jap transports. The airfield is in strike range of 2 big opposing bases for long range aircraft(Kendari and Derby). Even a Marine VMF Squadron is there. [:)]

Timor is more important strategically due to the assessibility of damaging Resource/Oil centers by aircraft. G'Canal had nothing to hit except more malaria invested jungle. I have believed that it is more important for the Allied counter-offensive to go though here vs the Solomons. [:-]
Look how long it took the Allies to switch over to bombing petroleum centers in Europe and the resulting loss of mobility the Germans had.

The threat of an Allied presence on Guadalcanal was an eventual move toward Rabaul. You are right about Timor, though. Balikpapan can be hit from Surabya, but Kendari is too far away from Oz to hit without losing too many bombers on the flight home.

In this game Timor is more important strategically because the Allies hold JAVA.
Glad to see the Allies are still winning

July 19, 1942
The Admiralty announced today the retirement of Lord Admiral Hunter
as CIC of Allied Forces. He will be taking a position with the Royal Command of Really Strange Things to work on the "59-mile problem" and "Unescorted Japanese Transport Invisible Force Field Phenomenon". The Allied war effort in the Pacific is indebted to his successful evacuation of the bulk of Allied forces from the Malay Penisnusla.
