Correct. Basically the house rules are the ones I always use:
Anything goes so long as:
a) it isn't a clear abuse of a flawed game mechanic,
b) it can be countered by the opposing player ( the lack of interceptibility of mine-dropping bombers bans them on the back of this rule)
c) it conforms to newtonian physics - with Aden being on-map we no longer have to worry about the fortresses on the West Coast of the USA suddenly teleporting in to a besieged Karachi. [8|]
 
We also agreed that the Allies wouldn't go crazy with PTs and that we wouldn't be use single-ship TFs to use up bombardment TF op points. Apart from that it is all fair game as you can see with the defence over Ceylon. So far I've identified Royal Air Force, USAAF, Dutch, Chinese and Soviet air units being committed to this region so Jutland is feeling free to throw whatever is available into the area. I don't pretend that it is historical but it is, at least, an interesting variant of the game and, IMO, a lot of fun.

Thanks. Much kudos for this has to go to Jutland who fights like a crazed boar [:D]. You can't have large, interesting battles if the other player imitates an Ostrich.

Re: Landing in non base hexes.

The problem with landings in non base hexes are

(a) Artillery (coastal and other) located in a non base hex will not fire on invading TF's.

(b) TF's will not react to invading TF's (a TF on patrol needs a friendly base to trigger its reaction to invading TF's)

Kereguelen, I hadn't known that. It strikes me that that's something they might want to look into changing as no-one in their right minds is going to land IN Karachi instead of landing just south of it and marching in overland.

Well, you pay your money and take your chaneces. Leaving the CVEs without the cover from the superior fighters on the CVLs has cost me dearly. One of the CVEs can still manage flight operations as the bomb hits were almost all 100 Kg bombs dropped by the IL-2s but the Taiyo may sink unless Trincomalee is captured immediately. Still, one has to accept losses in order to achieve what one wishes... in this case the destruction of the last two BBs in the Royal Navy's Indian Squadron.

Ramilles doesn't immediately sink and manages to dock at Cochin. This will avail it little though as Trincomalee is about to fall and once it does I will launch port attacks until Ramilles sinks. While a few cruisers have survived they are docked at Trincomalee and will have to run the gamut of aerial attacks as they seek to escape. I expect very few will be succesful and so it seems the destruction of the Indian Ocean Squadron has been succesfully completed at a cost of 2 CA, 1 CL and 7 or so DDs. The pity is that if the CA TF had just obeyed my orders on the first day I could have destroyed the RN at no cost but we have to accept the victories we're given.

Attacking Changsha is costly in terms of dive-bombers destroyed but as one of the two main Chinese supply-generating bases its destruction is of paramount importance. Another benefit of destroying these resources is that when I capture these bases their garrison requirements will be significantly reduced. In the long term this means that not only will I take China more quickly and cheaply than might otherwise be possible I will also free up far more forces for other theatres than would otherwise be the case.

29 Chinese and Soviet fighters go up, 20 of them come down in flames in return for a single Zero. This is a demonstration of just how crucial experience is. By mid-43 and certainly by early 1944 the Allies ought to have the advantage in terms of experience and plane quality. The reverse of this is what awaits me at that time.

At a cost of 3 planes destroyed 49 torpedo bombers manage to hurl 10 torpedoes into the sides of four enemy cruisers. The remnants of the Royal Navy battleline continue to be whittled down bit by bit. This is good because the more ships they lose now the fewer ships that will be available to escort the amphibious re-invasion of India.

I do like the B4Y. Apart from the range and a slightly increased loss rate I think it is fully the equal of the Kate.

any a/c that can haul a torpedo is worth having (even wildebeest [;)]).

Re- the Sturmovik shipping menace.

Is it thier armour that allowing more to break through or just better pilots (and morale) than the UK ? . Kind of suprised this a/c could even hit a ship [:'(]. sure strafing with 23mm cannons i buy that easily and even rocketing them later on, but i'm pretty sure the soviet AF wasnt trained on anti-shipping duty. also hasnt the IL2 got a pretty crummy range (3/4) ish ?

Never underestimate the Il-2. It hasn't been sufficiently recognised in the west but the Il-2 to Il-10 series of aircraft were absolutely amazing. It ranks right up there with the FW-190 for versatility. E.g. The Il-2 came in dive-bombing variants, heavily-armed and armoured ground attack variants, single seat fighter versions, could carry iron bombs, cluster bombs ( which were used in great numbers on the Eastern Front by both the Germans and Soviets), parafrags and torpedoes. They sunk quite a few German and Rumanian ships in the Black Sea.

I think the ideal WW2 air force would comprise Fighters and fighter-bombers on the FW-190 A to F line, interceptors based on the Ta-152, CAS delivered by the Soviets and strategic bombing delivered by the Americans with the Japanese running the naval anti-shipping campaign and the British in charge of ASW. In this game I've also been swapping my sub COs out for maximally aggressive commanders as soon as possible. It is really paying dividends. I've lost two subs, both to enemy air searches operating out of Pearl Harbour but I've sunk well over 20 ships, including several DDs and CLs.

RE the MLE

Unless you have tinkered with the ship database the allies get ZERO new ones unless they convert some in the USA , losing any in the SEAC theatre would be a major loss.

CVEs: Well, they are badly damaged but I think they've still got a chance. Pretty soon I'm going to have both a Level 6 and a Level 9 port. I think that my best bet is to try to take Colombo really quickly and then dock them there 2 days from now. Otherwise they'll have to take 5 days to get to Trincomalee. In any case if I do lose a couple of them I think it'll still be worth it given that India is looking increasingly like toast.

what happened to this AAR ? and allies can convert AK's (7k ones) to MLE/AR/AS/AGP and AV's 3 months time iirc. but only in San Fran, can't do it in the SEAC theatre.
