I saw the film today and loved it.

It has a unique visual style that is simply stunning; the battle sequences are superb; and the acting reflects that this movie is a man's movie - that Spartan warriors are born and bred for battle...

9.5/10
Not bad. I wish it had been more historically accurate, but the makers of the film never claimed it was a documentary.

I have read where some poeple have complained bitterly about inaccuracies in the movie '300', which seems rather odd to me. I watch Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder) WW1, which wasn't generally historically accurate, but a lot of fun to watch. These shows don't pretend to be strict historical fact, but use a certain time period as a backdrop to tell their own stories.

An interesting story was told, in an imagitive way.

Let me get this straight. You're insulting my intelligence because I said I liked a movie.
That's real mature...[8|]

Uh buddy. I major in ancient history. I know ancient history like the WiTP players know about the Pacific War.
300 is a fictional story adapted from a graphic novel. It's taking a historical event and placing it in a fantasy setting. As in story telling. And it did a darn good job of it.

Most likely too stoned or too sober to maintain.

Glad you liked the movie. I still haven't seen it but it should arrive this week. Very much looking forward to it.

As for the lack of complete historical accuracy, I don't much care. The older the history the less important to me that it be exact - since there's plenty of guesswork involved anyway. If Troy had opted to include more of the mythology it might have been all the better for it. I've seen several westerns that included Native American mythology and it didn't ruin them for me. WW2 and later, yeah it needs to have at least some degree of historical realism. Still, I expect 300 to be all around better history than Pearl Harbor or Windtalkers (just to name a couple). ;)

Well... Herodotus wasn't exactly spot-on-accurate historical narrative either (is there even such a thing). I always look at the Roman and Greek historians like Graphic Novelists (particularly Tacitus). They loved to entertain just as much as inform (I'm a medievalist, so the medieval authors do the same thing).

And as to the 300, White Rabbit... that is MADNESS!

No... this IS THE MATRIX FORUMS! *Gives Rabbit and electronic boot into the Pit of Despair(tm)*

I really liked the movie. Although I did yell, "OH COME ON!" at the Rhino. And I was shocked to learn that Xerxes was played by the annoying Brazilian guy Paulo who "appeared" in this latest season of Lost. Frank Miller is twisted... I wonder what he dreams when he sleeps...

..yup, s'right, i am..

..300 guys go out against possibly the biggest army in the world and get themselves usefully slaughtered, and apparently it's good to "improve" on this heroic feat with fantasy additions..

..ok, so the US army in the Philipines did what it had to and more, very heroically...my view..

..when do we see the defence of Bataan by US soldiers, and a few Pino's of course, against Japanese flying harpies, multi-armed sword-wielding Japs and of course fully trained armoured-Godzillas...

..yahh, add loin-cloth clad heroes and i've got it sussed, great movie and totally historically acceptable...

..damned movie "300" was small beer, there are better representations..

..no, why ?..

..if you'l accept this amount of distortion of well-known fact, then i dread to think what distortions of lesser known facts you'll swallow..

..Sin City's a better movie..

..oh, and btw, that's "a" white rabbit, all small case, just one of many small harmless furry creatures ..

Whatever[:D]

I've read a few books on the battle. Watched a couple of movies, too, including some mess produced in the 50s that was as bad as Flynn in Robin Hood.

The 300 is a great popcorn flick, and I'm glad I bought the DVD. See it because it's an exciting story that's well told.

If you want to knock movies based on historical battles and/or personalities, then bring up Patton.....I just threw up in my mouth.....or Hamburger Hill.....or Battle of the Bulge.

I love Zulu! But the movie represents the engineer commanding the Brits as the hero of the day, rather than what actually happened. So there's cinematic license there. Doesn't detract from the film.

There are TON of flicks out there that are based on historical events that misrepresent what actually happened just as much as 300. And with far fewer excuses to offer to justify what they did.

Seems like it would have been perfect movie for Kirk Douglas as Leonidas v. Anthony Quinn as Xerxes kinda movie. That or the unintentional comedy of the Duke as Leonidas.

See...what fails to be grasped here is a very basic concept....a movie is a story told with artistic licence. If you want a factual movie, their called documentaries...and you can get those too.

That doesn't seem to be too difficult a concept to graps, but for some reason, some people still don't get it. [:'(]

Was referring to why Kirk et al didn't do a movie on Thermopylae (not 300) in the 50's like they did w/ Spartacus, Biblical epic fu, etc. I had my smartass reference to 300 on an earlier page not this one. [:)]

My post was a general post, not aimed at anyone specifically...just a general consensus  some people have that if something is even remotely based on an historical event, then it must be historical and, if it isn't, it's rubbish.

I see now it says in reply to anarchyintheuk but that is just what's added when you do a quick reply...it defaults to you replying to the last post...but it wasn't aimed at you, or any other one individual. [:D]

edited to reinforce it WASN'T aimed at you!! [;)]
