Ack! It's nighttime. I know it's the depths of winter but I wasn't quite expecting it so soon. This is going to give the Austrians a bit of a reprieve as they can rest up a bit. Of course, so can I though I do take a WTF hit on the new day.

Not much went on during the night as I wanted to try to rest my troops. I did try a little bit of infiltration though so I could be in the best situation in the morning.
Notice how my WTF has fallen drastically overnight. This is one reason why I started the battle in the morning as for all I know this battle could have lasted till day 3 and my WTF would be close to collapse. But that didn't happen and I suspect while I have to work at it a little bit, the Austrians will collapse this day.
Here's the dawn of a new day!

It's been a good morning. Luckily I awoke before the Austrians did and was able to unleash a devastating barrage of fire completely wiping out the northern flank. There's still a fair amount of Austrians in the south though but unless the Austrians have a new trick up their sleeve, it's just a matter of time.

It's now 11:20 and the battle is well in hand. A few Austrian brigades are still around but as evidenced by the WTF, they are going to capitulate soon. I am risking some of my cavalry in charges to try to cause as many casualties as possible. I'm not inherently a mean bastard but casualties reduce national morale and I need Austria to collapse as a nation as quickly as possible.

And the battle for Vienna is over. I won fairly handily though I did have to adapt my plan changing emphasis from one flank to the other. Unlike original CoG, you now don't have to run around pursuing the entire army anymore as the pursuit phase is done automatically. Lancer's are very very good in this phase and since I have two divisions of them, this turned a bad defeat for the Austrians into an all out unmitigated disaster. I am hoping that this will cause them to surrender to me next turn.

And here is the casualty screen. I actually thought I had done better. The 7k casualties I took doesn't seem like a lot but remember that's over 10% of my entire army and I have several other nations I have to go to war with!
I believe I showed most of the features of instant combat. If there's something you didn't get or want to see, let me know and I will try to answer your question.

Back on the strategic map. No great surprise considering how low their morale was already plus all the casualties I caused in this battle, Austria surrenders to me. Not a moment too soon as I see a small but equally well trained Russian army on the way to Krakow.

Now here's the fun part. I get to draw up a surrender treaty with Austria. I only got 6650 surrender pts from it which isn't nearly as much as I was hoping for (a complete victory could over 10k!) but it's still pretty good. Probably so low because except for that one battle, not much was fought plus the war was over pretty quick if you think about it.
So anyway, wanted to show this screen to show you the new restrictions on asking them to cede land. You can take islands, or lands that border your own so my choices are rather limited. In this shot it is the slightly darker brown provinces that I can take.

So this is the final treaty I came up with. I am taking two provinces, asking for free passage and forcing Austria to declare war on Russia. I had to shorten my free passage clause a month because otherwise they wouldn't have agreed to declare war.
The war could potentially be disastrous for them but the real hope is that those two countries will just distract each other. I still don't know what's happening in France as they are miraculously still holding out and technically Austria is still at war with them.

Feb1793:
Other than the battle, not much else happened. France amazingly is still holding out.
Mar1793:
The only thing I did this month was draw up that surrender treaty and rest my troops. As expected, Britain joined the war against me. One new development though was France finally capitulated to both Prussia and Austria.
Apr 1793 planning
Here's the event report showing what happened in March (if it's not clear, event reports I show are always of the previous month, sorry if I sometimes get the timing mixed up!).
In CoG:EE, if a nation surrenders they get a fairly significant increase in experience points to spend. Austria got it when I beat them, but now France gets it when the surrender too. Notice they technically surrendered twice so there's a small second bonus too.

And here is the glory situation at the end of March. I am in the lead but Austria surprisingly is second. They lost a lot when they lost to me but they gained it all back and more apparently for beating France. France is now in an enforced peace with Austria/Prussia so they will be worthless as an ally if I were to get them. Sadly, they or spain didn't like my three way protection pact anyway.
In fact, Russia is now asking Spain for a mutual protection pact. If that passes then Spain will have to declare war on me too!

And with that I'm going to take a break for the day as it's getting late. I've successfully completed my war against Austria but have Russia knocking on my door. The Prussian/Austrian coalition still managed to defeat France so now Prussia is certainly going to send it's troops my way. And I have no real idea how big their army is.
Britain is against me too but as primarily a naval power it is unlikely I will see any troops from them. Stranger things have happened though. Russia has asked for a bipartate protection pact with Spain and if it passes, I will soon have Spain to contend with too. I would say it couldn't get any worse but if I were to say that, then I'm sure I'd have Turkey attacking me as well!

great reading. A few Qs;
1. The upgrades available to purchased for your units, do they work the same way as in FoF?
2. You substituted Sweden with Poland for this campaign, and on the battle-screenies, your units are flying Swedish colours, which I guess is because Poland is substituted for Sweden. Will this be fixed before release, so that you will be flying Polish colours?
3. The after battle report shows 7k casualties, I take it this includes the 2.6k losses taken during pursuit as well?

No, more based on Morale of the unit, so good upgrades are only for good units

Are the troops in detailed combat going to be like FOF or like above with 1 figure and dots?
Just curious because I really enjoy the detailed battles.

I believe they are going to remain in the CoG style as shown.

This is a great question and I honestly have no idea. WCS will have to respond to this one.

Ok, so let's regroup briefly before I finish up my planning phase. The Russians have a small army next door to Krakow. I may show this one in Quick Combat so those unfamiliar with the system can see. As you can see by all the posts, doing a detailed level battle, especially at brigade level can take awhile. Anyway, the Prussians are evidently back in Prussia and will probably head my way but surprisingly the scouts claim it's not that large an army. However, you can see lots of little questionmarks around the map so who knows what is really out there.
Also, the Spanish are in Italy having recently conquered Genoa so if they may be able to join the fight. Note that countries are somewhat loathe to send troops completely across the map because the supply costs would be outrageous and who knows what might crop up at home. So I may not have to worry too much about them. We'll see.

Planning Apr93
About the only thing I'm going to do this month is wait for the Russians to attack Krakow. I'm fairly confident in this battle given I will be on home territory and my army is apparently larger than theirs.
Other than that, I'm going to order this merchant out to the Gulf of Bothnia off of Sweden to start collecting some money. Note the number besides the 'Merchant' text in the sea is the expected income at this given time. However, it does not nor could not account for all the things that might happen such as privateers or other merchants competing. So if I'm lucky, I will get a maximum of 15 money, but it may be less. Also note that merchants can be attacked directly by enemy frigates so I'm taking a bit of gamble here.
But it's an AAR and I wanted to show you the feature.
Finally, I'm going to do as Hard Sarge suggested and see if I can get Turkey into a war with Russia to help relieve some of the pressure.
