Many people say they do not like the movie "The Thin Red Line". It has always been one of my favorites. The bitter old marine colonel reminded me of an officer that I worked for in the air force. I also find the pillbox assault to be one of the most intense combat scenes in any movie.

My all time favorite is of course Cross of Iron.

There is a Russian movie made in the 60s called Liberation that is very good as well. It is very long and I have never seen a version dubbed in english.

If you're referring to the 1990 nuclear war flick, then whilst the movie was fine, try the book...

Absolutely outstanding. Twice as deep, three times as gripping and pretty revealing about how a nuclear exchange might have panned out. I couldn't put it down.

You're right. I somehow missed that. Well, seems to me that the unspellability of Prince of Eckmühl's name is exceeded by his taste in movies.

Are two i can think of off the bat.

I would include Southland Tales,but it seemed it was just being weird at points just to show off how far out there it was.So it gets only an honorable mention.

Andreas Hofer - Die Freiheit des Adlers. Not sure if it's all that underrated, but it slipped by pretty unnoticed outside of Austria... :/

+1 to the Scorpion King, despite the silly humour and toned-down violence, that was IMHO a decent sword-and-sorcery movie.

Not sure about the Descent being underrated - that one got a lot of buzz when it came out iirc, surely a great movie, though I had to watch it on DVD to truly enjoy it - cinema was way too noisy.

The other movie I'd like to add is Way of the gun - sure, it drags a bit in places, but it's very gripping overall, fairly gritty and with excellent gunfights/violence.

as to Kubrick my personal opinion is he's the most overrated hack there ever was.

Just wonderin anybody remember Val Kilmer's first movie called "Top Secret"

Man that was a classic. The sight gags were so bad they were hilarious. Turning East Germany into Nazi Germany was original, and the whole scene with peter cushing played in reverse so it appeared everyone was talking "sweedish" was clever. Definitely underrated and a hard to find cult classic [:D][:D]

Wow! That goes back a ways. Great fun flick. Pinto scene was great....

Big thanks to all who mentioned Cross of Iron. Somehow I hadn't seen it before (the shame!)
It was a superb film is every way. I think maybe the best war movie ever.

well....ok Jack was always at his best when he over acted but at least in Shane he is much more reserved. One must remember that Shame was one of those westerns that set the mark for god and bad guy in the western films. A kind of Spaghetti western with class.

You might consider reading "The Last Ship" I can't remember the author but it was a good nuck movie with a twist or two
