Russian road conditions are slowly improving and we are able to make some territorial gains in the north.

With strong British units both in the West as well as in the East of the Italian colonies in North Africa, it is once more time to pull back.

The battle for Belgrade is fought bitterly against well entrenched defenders. This time we have used air attacks for the first time in Yugoslavia so that we were more likely to crack the outer ring.

The Russian superiority in Finland is now so large that they can conduct the rest of the campaign virtually without further losses.

Where in the north will the Russian Army make a stand? Some commanders in the German army have the eerie feeling the Russians are playing cat and mouse with us. In the south the battle is more equal at the moment even though we suspect we are dealing just with forward defenses at Lvov and the real line is further east at Kiev and Vinnitsa.

Couldn't you send some units to Finland so you could help them hold out a little? A few German units would make a great difference, wouldn't they?

Hello Fishbed, thanks for reading the AAR.

Absolutely, a few German units would make a difference. The British in French Africa are a good example how this can work.

Unfortunately, the obstinate Finish remained neutral despite the USSR attack and didn't join the Axis camp (that is a feature of ToW and nobodies choice). In game terms it means I cannot enter Finland with German troops even if I wanted to help them.

The only option I have is to sway them into the Axis camp with Diplomacy (I may not even have enough DPs as Finland has a high political resistance in ToW) and given this it may not be worth it since Finland is probably a lost cause and I better use my Diplomacy Points on other future partners.

The Italian colonies in N. Africa are shrinking fast. But we make some progress in Yugoslavia.

The Finish capital is lost, the country mourns and the situation is becoming depressing ...

The German navy has left port for the Baltic to engage the Soviet navy and bring relief to Finland. But no decisive naval victory can be celebrated yet.

German progress in Russia is steady so far but it is not exactly Blitzkrieg. Advanced mobile units (tanks mainly)need to wait for slower Infantry to catch up in order to not get isolated in their forward positions. We don't have enough resources to motorize the majority of the infantry.

You're welcome. I enjoy both reading your AAR and your opponent's a lot [:)]

May very well make me buy the game, despite the sour comments I heard here or there (this and the fact that everyone seems to be completely nuts when it comes to graphics, comparing them to 1990s - to me they look fine, has no-one ever played TOAW or what?!).

Yes, graphics seems to be an emotional topic. But I imagine that most people enjoy this type of game for the soundness of the underlying engine and game mechanisms. At least for me ToW is doing the trick in this regard. Improvements are always possible. Following this game and its predecessor for a year now or so I can tell you it did come a long way. Development is very active and is paying a lot of attention to the user community. The upcoming patch is a good example for this.

We conduct limited counterattacks before Tripoli but have lost Tobruk.

The Axis high command is convinced that they can finish the Yugoslavian campaign very soon despite the well played defense by the Yugoslavian forces over the last month.

We are witnessing the last few weeks of a free Finland. The German intervention will not be in time (if successful at all) to prevent Finish annexion by Russia.

Latvia surrendered and the siege of Belgrade succeeded as well. Hence we expect also a Yugoslavian surrender very soon. Given our success so far (as short lived as it may be) the Romanians could be convinced to join our Axis coalition. Their economy is not insignificant and can help our overall war effort. For now we have to make sure they are not overrun by a Red Horde unleashed by Russia.

The Italian air force was again fairly successful in their naval attacks while sustaining few own losses. This will at least partially drain W. Allied resources. Our submarine raiders are still out there but have little impact. One or two subs are destroyed every move by Allied naval patrols. We will withdraw the rest soon and build up the damaged fleet as a whole if we find the resources.

The German navy celebrates a victory in the Baltic with the sinking of the Russian BB Marat plus one more SS with now own ships lost. But this comes too late to aid Finland as the Russians can finish off Turku even without naval bombardment.

In Romania, German troops slowly unload from trains and Romanian troops move east towards the front.

Finland resisted the Russians so far for more than 8 month and inflicted some serious damage in the process. The Axis countries are satisfied with its performance - and Finland is still alive though hanging at a very thin thread.

The German advance in Russia grinds to a halt. Only in Estonia can we make fast progress. Since we will not conquer major Russian production centers anytime soon we can only win if we destroy more production every turn than Russia can rebuild. This turn we eliminated about 20SP of various quality and cost(i.e. air, infantry). This is insufficient to drain income of about 300PP. But we also seem to have the upper hand in the naval battle in the Baltic and eliminate a few vessels every turn with very few own losses. If the Russians chose to replace this, we are closer to the required PP balance.
