Hi, what level are you playing on? For Leningrad, on Normal, I have had better results pushing the Pz Corps along the Estonian Coast en mass and use inf to break through and link up coming through Pskov (less Swamps up nth and quick link supply line via Tallinin port and quick Baltic rail repair). I am beginning to think the quickest way to isolate Leningrad is by smashing across the river and taking the one port in hex 82, 15 (Osinovets). Otherwise you have to get three ports, one of them all the way through to the Svir river.

regards,

tony

You have to get the port right next to the Finnish border to isolate Leningrad. Here was my turn 10 position and Leningrad is still not isolated.

Damn, thinking I might start another game just to try a different tactic. I will keep this one going of course.

I always seem to get bogged down outside Pskov and cant break thru fast enough. No matter what I try.

I took Pskov on turn 4 by doing this:

The 16th army infantry took the city which let the armor exploit north to get to my turn 6 position above.

Of course, I didn't get any mud which would be a killer.

Yup, I think your early mud turns were the main problem, having more than 1 Panzerkorps up in the north didnt help me much in the end, but that 1 corps was helpful in giving me a headstart.

"You have to get the port right next to the Finnish border to isolate Leningrad. Here was my turn 10 position and Leningrad is still not isolated."

I think that the port has to be connected to the rr supply grid - "

"When tracing over Lake Ladoga ports, the MP costs of going over the water hexes in the Lake are as described in section 20.4.1 for tracing over water (cost of going from water to port or port to water, and costs of going over ice as listed). However, the costs listed above in MPs and off rail hexes will apply from the port on Lake Ladoga down rail lines hexes."

"In order to receive supply, a combat unit first attempts to trace a path to the headquarters unit to which it is attached. The combat unit must be within both five hexes and twenty MPs of the applicable headquarters unit. In order for a headquarters unit to provide supply to its attached combat and support units, it in turn must be within both 25 hexes and 100 MPs of a railhead. If a combat unit cannot trace an eligible path to its headquarters unit, it will then attempt to trace a path to a railhead as if it was a headquarters unit, i.e. within both 25 hexes and 100 MPs of the railhead."

What I want to know is: Does the east bank port port have to be in supply by the above rules which apply to combat units in order to ship supplies over the lake?  Does the count begin on the rr head on the east side of the lake, to the east port and then across the lake to the port on the west bank and then down the rr to the units in the Leningrad pocket; or what ??? Apparently the port will trace back through the border fortified areas as far as it needs to get to a RR, within the 100mps. The Leningrad units were showing supply lengths in the 75+ range. Leningrad was not isolated until turn 12 after I had taken the port on turn 11.

I can only suspect it was tracing supply like this:

That's what I think...so my attacks are vectored to the RR line and head, across the woods and not towards the port through the marsh.

If the port has 100mps to trace supply, it can go a long, long way to the rear to get to a railhead. Since port-to-port across Ladoga is just 1mp in non-ice turns, it basically has 99 mps to get to railhead. You'd have to go way deep on the far northern rail line which is not feasible. Or, you have to connect with the Finns somewhere to cut off the supply route.

Maybe it was the mud that killed me. You playing with random or non random weather?

I got to Pskov on turn turn 3 and took it turn 4. But by then I am super low on fuel and the Russians are closing in my rear area.

You can meet up with the Finns 6 - 10 hexes east of the port and this will cut the rail link.

You can try, but you won't bust that line in the heavy woods with armor I can promise you that.

One day I will figure out how you guys manage to get that far. I always get bogged down.
