January 23-Feb 13, 1942
We last left off with a pair of US CVs (Saratoga/Yorktown) and CVE Long Island driving the Japanese Northern Fleet out of the region. It was hard to watch as my ships were subjected to numerous SBD Attacks. Losses were significant. The American CVs and a BB led STF operated at will until the 27th. Notable losses include CVE Hosho, CL Yura, 8 old DDs, 1 AK, 4 PB, and an AO. Hosho and the AO hurt a bit but the rest isn't too bad.
In an attempt to get the Allies to clear out the Japanese CVs East and NE of Hawaii are allowed to be seen moving North. They move 3 days in that direction, link-up with little Taiyo and come back south.
The Hosho survivors (8 Zero--11 Pilots and 3 Kate--4 Pilots) are flown off to Midway so Taiyo's 12 Zero and 9 Val can be used again. Little Taiyo gets a confirmed sinking when her planes (10 Zero and 5 Val) hit AP Maui with 4 Bombs. The AP was carrying troops appeared heading North.
As the shipping flees West to Paramushiro Jima, several days are allowed to lapse. At Dutch Harbor sat 3 DD and 7 big AKs disbanded in the harbor. Time is allowed for the Americans to withdraw and then 4 AKs are loaded with 1 1/2 SNLF and drop them at Akutan on Febuary 1st. The troops surprise and get the surrender of the 2/153rd Bat there! Nice little victory. The AKs flee West and, sure enough, the next day a STF centered on Warspite bombards Akutan and a small strike from Long Island misses the AKs.
Seeing this happen plants the germ of an idea with the Japanese High Command. The 1st Mixed Brigade arrived at Rabaul on the 28th and got ordered to begin prep for Umnak. There are at leats 3 units there and a squadron of P-36 and Bolo operating from that base. As this unit and two new Naval Guard at Tokyo fills out and begins its prep work, the Fleet begins to gather to deal with the Allied warships.
Little Zuiho and Shoho arrive at Kobe on the 8th of February and enter the yards for quick repairs. They have 3 CA, 1 CL, and 6 DD with them. The TF waits for the arrival of CVL NIsshin and CV Junyo. Both carriers shall be available about February 25th as well as some ship named YAMATO! This should be more then enough force to, hopefully, catch this piece of the Allied Fleet and decisively sink it.
Umnak shall be taken and serve to provide a nice POW haul for Japan. Invasion Date for Umnak is about March 15th...
